Hello,

on of the bigger Ea guys just told us yesterday that the upcoming EA games (in this case Red Alert 3) will come with SecuROM. The difference is that it will be a bit more userfreindly:

  • You can install it up to five times (he wrote 5 computers, but I think it means five times)
  • Fore more installtions you will have to contact the customer-support and they will deal with it case-by-case
  • One-tine internet activation
  • No more controls
  • No active internet connection required after activation

He also said that this is planed for all upcoming EA RTS games.

 

So, what do you think about this? - I know we have a big talk about CPs, but what do you think about this way EA is following now?

5 still isn't enough.  Nto to mention what happens if they take the activation servers down in 5 years?

Actually, the most likely scenario in that case is they would release a patch to remove the activation limit.  That's what some other companies have done in the past.  So... do you feel lucky?

Me too. It is something my PC is on. This is the only forums where I get such crap. Most times I can edit my posts to get rid of it but the past couple days I have not been able to do such things.

Yep and lots fo them as well. At last count when I did a complete survey of all the Amazon sites there was well over 10k one star reviews. It is also bleeding over into other EA titles on the horizon to boot and for the best thing of all SD is getting plugged by people on many sites reporting on the situation.

Over 1K one-star reviews, that really bad. I guess they can be lucky that you can't give zero-star or negative-star reviews.

Seriously, I have nothing against activations, but I have something against forced online-connection and limited activations. it was already bad on steam and it will be bad on anything else.

 

Back to the CPs

  • They have only one goal: upset the cumstomer as much as you can so that he/she/it (some people think they aren't human) won't buy an further games/products
  • Pirates don't have problems with that, because th CP was removed

 

I also love these CPs that tell you "Pleas, insert the original CD/DVD", while it is inside of your CD/DVD-Drive and you just play an hour ago that game. When you start the game a second time is runs normal. SO, again the CP is pissing of someone who bought the game ...

Even Steam is better than SecuROM in that sense, if I remember correctly. Steam doesn't require constant checking: Once you activate and install the game, you can place it in offline mode and it'll be happy as long as you want it to be. But with SecuROM and other DRMs, they'll start whining if you have no internet connection.

Well, I wasn't able to play it (HL2) offline , but I think I did something wrong. The problem with steam was that I had to start it in order to play the game and it was resource-devouring for me at this time. Even more annoying was the thing that is patched all games without even asking me (I couldn't find any option to disable this) and devoured my inetrnet-connection (I had only ISDN at that time).

I think even iTunes has a better DRM than SecuRom. Yes, you need an internet-connection for the activation, but nafter it no longer. You can use 5 activation adn get one back when you deactivate it. The most funny part is, you can burn your music to a CD/DVD and even rip it back with iTunes to remove the DRM. Unfortunately I would never rip something with iTunes, I don't trust it's ripping quality. Yes, I know iTunes isn't good.

 

I just begin to ask my self, what kind to treatment will we "the paying cumosters" get next? - How about "Please deactive your hardware-/Software-Firewall, so that you can't see what our activation programs are doing" or "This game has to be installed on it's own partition and you are not allowed to install anything else it it"?

Sorry for going a little OT here. I believe the offline mode was not working properly for a while, but it works now. You can also right-click the game in your my games list and go to properties to change whether to keep the game up to date or not. I was originally a Steam resistor, only using it to fill my Team Fortress addiction. I have since found a lot of useful features(voice chat replaces long distance phone calls for example) with it. That and they run some great deals sometimes that hard for me to pass up ;) . I now have about 30 games through Steam and not had a problem with but one, and that was the game and not Steam's fault. A trip to the developers forums fixed it up in short order.

Things like Securom on the other hand provide no service to the customer like Impulse and Steam do and therefore will be cracked/removed at first opportunity if I accidently get a game with it unknowingly.

EA will keep on not getting it and blaming low sales on Piracy instead of their own DRM which forces people to piracy. At this point it is obvious they will continue this route and as long as that's the way they do business then I wouldn't feel a slight bit of remorse in cracking/pirating their software.  

 

Quite, God knows how many thousands upon thousands of people that would otherwise not pirate have been introduced to piracy by Spore.

 

EA is going to kill PC gaming with their attuide.

i know that im not purchasing Spore/RA3/or any other EA game; actually outside of Civ IV, I havent bought any game other than Stardock titles for the past two years; I don't personally pirate games, but hell if i can't say that I don't agree with people.  My computer crashed twice last week, and while my important files were backed-up, I was glad to know that even though I lost all my saves for my SD games, I could just hop on Impulse and have em right back within about 5 minutes.  No wonder how SD keeps getting me to buy new products, I don't get treated like crap by them.
