Ability Moves from Ship to Ship...

(Or i'm up to my neck, now what do i do?)

i've only been playing/changing things for a week, but have mostly messed with numbers. have changed some weapons from one ship to another. i thought it would be cool to have a beam weapon on a scout. actually i wonder why the devs didn't have projectiles for the tec, beams for the advent and maybe some different plasma effect, perhaps like globs of light shot from the vasari. it would make for a nice difference, off topic, but anyway, now i am attempting to move some abilities from one ship to another, in an effort to consolidate those abilities i want into one ship. this way i don't need three or four ships, only one. :)

I have been reading over the general modding threads and the intro to modding that was so interesting, but i haven't seen anything on abilities yet. perhaps i am blind, it is probably in the forum somewhere. Before i go on, perhaps a search would prove worthwhile.

This is actually pretty simple. Each ship's entity file (up top for capitals, towards the bottom for frigates usually) has a list of the 4 ability slots for that ship. The abilities listed correspond to the file names. All you have to do is list the abilities you want the ship to have in its entity file :)

And because it's late and I'm forgetting stuff, moving capital ship abilities to frigates is a bit trickier.

Capital abilities have this:

maxNumLevels 3
levelSourceType "Intrinsic"
minExperienceLevelRequired
    Level:0 0.000000
    Level:1 2.000000
    Level:2 4.000000

"Intrinsic" means the ability's level depends on the level of the ship (1, 3, 5 respectively, the files start counting at 0 rather than 1). Since frigates don't have levels, this won't work. So all frigate abilities need to have:

maxNumLevels 1
levelSourceType "FixedLevel0"

For the ability to be always "on". If you're curious, abilities that you research look like:

maxNumLevels 1
levelSourceType "ResearchWithoutBase"
improveSourceResearchSubject "RESEARCHSUBJECT_ABILITYACCESS_SABOTAGEENGINES"

As an example :) But since none of the capital ship abilities need research, you don't need to worry about this one.

hee hee, a scout with capital level gauss cannons or an anti-fighter craft with capital level "Flak Burst" set to 3 antimatter and 5s delay.  BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!   Eat that Drone-Whoring, Advent Witches!

                        Thank you very very much!  :)   I inserted the ability names, but completely missed the level thing.  :)

Will try it, and let you know the results.   Haha, Beware The DreadNaught Scout!!   :)

of course if I make it too easy, then I will have to figure out a way to balance the other side to keep it interesting.

But right now, just staying alive is wonderful!!   :)

You're welcome :P Actually, another thing I just remembered - the level 6 capital abilities have a flag in their ability files "isUltimate TRUE". I'm not sure what effect, if any, that flag would have if you left that on a frigate's ability, but the normal ones are set to FALSE.

:)   Now there is a coder after my own heart!!   :) 

You know your thought made me think of a "all psychic" ship. I used to play "controllers" in City of Hero's, and the controllers were weak physically, but were mean at a distance.   :)  Might be interesting to see if i could put a ship together with low armor and weapons, and "psych" them out.   :)  Haha...  thank you for the interesting idea.                       Thank you!!  I had a 63 x 63... but didn't realize it needed to be 50 x 50. Thank you. Oh... just as a followup, I got the capital fighters and bombers, as well as the beam and projectile weapons, two of the Anima powers and the colonize and capture powers from the missionary vessel. I tuned down the speed, but increased the weapons by about 20, about 40 percent increase. Anyway, was marvelously waltzing through everything, almost so much that it was boring, haha. Until i got an advent partner in one game who turned on me, and they have access to the same ship. Oh no!!  Anyway, am now trying to figure out a way to see if there are ships or tweaks that will only apply to the player (me), instead of to all the advent race.

I also saw someone had made a new race in a mod, and that may be the best way, just to try that one.
