Tribute and leases and war questions

Tributes continue, probably to prevent abuse by first making large purchases and then starting an "official" if not very active war.

I'm 99%+ certain that long leases for purchases are NOT cancelled upon declaration of war - basically they are not cancelled, unless by death, and even then I'm not certain what happens.

This is obviously to avoid an 'exploit' where you agree to pay some rediculously long lease, then declare war the next turn to skip out on the tab

My thinking is that If I Pay tribute and they declair war, one op the penalties for them is to loose the tribute, like they loose the trade benifit.

I think there are two different issues here. If someone agrees to lease technology from you. They should not get out of their lease just because of a war.

However, if someone offers tribute to avoid a war, the other party should not be allowed to accept it, and immediately declare war. If it's tribute paid over time, a possible solution would be to cut it off. Of course if they demand an up front payment, then you're screwed anyway.

I dont understand how you guys are using the word lease.
Doesnt it normaly meen a temporary arangement, like renting?

Taking a long time to pay somthing instead of paying up front is termed a lease eventhough technicly thats not what it is. (its actually a long term loan).

The AI use how much you owe them as a consideration in deciding to declare war on you, even though they get paid regardless.

(Up to 1.02, I haven't checked since) Payment continues after their destruction - so for maximum cheese make peace for lots of cash, then redeclare war and finish them off.

For me this is by far the weakest part of Galciv. While I can understand how the payments for leasing technology would continue during a war (read "Trading With the Enemy" for a WW2 example), I just can't picture someone continuing to pay tribute for peace after the person who is accepting the tribute has declared war.

The person is in effect freely funding the ships that are killing their people; it just doesn't make sense. And in terms of game mechanics it is very exploitable. Get tribute. Declare war. Offer peace for tribute. Declare war. It also removes an interesting option in the game, the "I'll give you 10 bc a month as long as you don't attack me" tactic which is one of the most common forms of diplomacy.

You are correct, it is an incorrect use of the word lease, but it's been used so much now, it's become THE term. When you lease something, you pay for it over time, but you don't actually own it. At the end of the lease, you give the item back. That's not the case here.

What this is, is a loan or amortization.
