Mining Problem

I played the tutorial, I upgrade my research constantly, and develop all kinds of ships.  But I still cant figure out how to mine outside the system I start in the game.  What ship(s) do I need or what resources or upgrades do I need to do this?  Can someone explain the steps please? Thanks

You have to colonize to be able to build new extractors.

Understand that planets must be colonized, but what about non-planetary (asteroid only) areas? They are not colonize-able but they have metal and crystal, both in orbiting rock and on the bigger asteroid. How do you extract metal on them?

Colony frigates for TEC and Advent, scouts for Vasari. It's a different ability.
