Ah, something to write about... Immigracion! RAID!!

Round 'em up, pack 'em up, send 'em back home

This is just a drop in the bucket to the numbers that need to be rounded up and sent home, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Feds detain nearly 600 in Miss. plant raid
Sweep of suspected illegal immigrants is the largest single-workplace raid

I could ask the obvious questions about just what the heck the HR department at this plant was doing to have hired 600 suspected illegal immigrants, but I think we all know what they were doing -- paying low wages for work from people that shouldn't be here.

I gotta give credit to the union member(s) that ratted out the employer on this one.  I'm no big fan of unions, but every now and then they seem to come through with something that puts a little faith back in this man.

A couple of points.

One, I find the whole mess abhorant.  In this case, the employer clearly knew.  There is no way they could not.  Time to fine them through the nose.

Two.  A similar roundup here was for more nefarious reasons.  While it has yet to be proven, apparently 50 illegals were rounded up working on a Federal Court House Project - just about the time that it was finished!  Someone wanted to get out of paying them or laying them off, and that is despicable.

Three.  Sexism.  Even in the workplace.  Why was the mother fitted with an ankle bracelet, and not the father?  Why was the father not fitted?  The chidlren were 4 and 9 years old. Either parent could have taken care of them.  Again the ugly head of sexims raises its head.

I wonder if this will be like in Postville where the workers are punished and the ownership faces no consequences.  If it's illegal to hire illegal workers, why aren't the owners charged too?  When the numbers are this high, I really don't think you can claim ignorance.

We need to pass legislation to allow these workers the right to work in our country.  Our country and businesses are benefitting from their labor.  They are the ones at risk because the owners never seem to be the ones shackled, just them.  I don't think it's necessary to give them citizenship, though if they were eventually able to pursue that great.  Just give them the right to be here and work.

They need to fine this place 10k a head plus the cost to deport. They might think about it in the future.

I agree to a point. These workers however need to apply for work in Mexico...no rewards for those here illegally. There are no degree of legality here, it either is or it isn't and I don't want anyone here that can't comprehend that simple concept (because it's in line with right and wrong). The issue then, after you process these workers through the legal system and the are allowed to work, the places that hire them now as illegals don't want them because they now have rights and are protected by the law. The US is approaching this the wrong way. Go after the businesses aggressively, and the illegals will flock home, as it would be impossible to stay without work or a government handout. Don't feel too sorry for those businesses, they are perpetrating fraud on the tax and social security system and most of the workers pay heads back to the family in Mexico and out of the US economy.

My wife called me last week after I dropped her off at the trainstation to go to work and told me she saw police (I figure she meant immigration) take 5 to 8 people off a Greyhound bus, supposely illegal immigrants. Kinda interesting how they caught them on a bus.

But what's even more interesting is a story I saw last week about how illegals are actaully going back home all on their own. Here is a link to the story but not sure this is the one I actually read.

Supposely the fear of getting caught and the slowdown of the economy is making them go back home. I guess removing the incentive to come here or stay here actually works. Who would have thought?

I agree on both points.
