The best start technology settings for own race and startegy at the beginning

I am a newbie in this game and I have been playing in Metaverse since few days. My best score is 6700 score on medium galaxy and diplomatic win mixed with destruction of one race. I use to set AI seettings from normal to intelligent.

Now, what technologies shall i have on the start for my own race? I have chosen:

Hyperdrive 25 pts

Modern Drive 50 pts

Xeno Communication 30 pts

Xeno Engineery 50 pts

Xeno Researching 20 pts

Star Cartography 25 pts

If it comes to abilities I chosen the best for my gamestyle.

Ingame, first thing i do is to increase taxes, so that people happines is at 49% and make insdustry on 99% (at 100 % gives me 5 bc less on income), the i buy factory  and palce it on bonus place if there is, i queue a farm, market and 2 happines buildings (that increase peoples happines +20%, dont know a name in english, i have polish version) and then 2nd market. I buy colony ship, send my reasearch ship to any close anomaly and colony ship to any nearby star system where on the minimap i see some planets. In next turns, i buy 2-4 more colony ships to be faster than AI in colony race and number of ships i buy depends on whetehr i found a anomaly giving me money. My first technolgies are sensors so my colony ships see whether their ship is coming to"my" planet ot not then i research for planetary projects to have betetr eco. On new colonized planet with class 10 or more i try to buy a factory after comiong there.

Am I doing the starrt proper way or not? I would appreciater any tips or comments.

Ok, where to start...

I can't help you too much on choice of techs since you are playing DL.  It's been too long since I've played the stock game (let alone v1.2 as I came in later than that).

As for other tactics.  It will be more beneficial to lower your taxes to create a 100% morale.  Keep adjusting it every week until you cannot handle it anymore economically.  Doing this will bring up your population, thus income via taxes and eventually level you off in income.  Since you're playing DL you shouldn't have too much of an inssue of backing off of this tactic due to increased starting funds (in TA you only start with 3,000bc).

Placing a farm so early I wouldn't think is wise.  You only need that improvement for when you are nearing your population cap.  I wouldn't rule out it's use completely though, I'd just move it down the list until you notice you are nearing the cap.

More will come when I think of it or other people light up a bulb in my head.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but you may actually want to lower your taxes to begin with.  Get your morale to 100% and your population growth doubles.  Tax income is dependent on your population.  You'll lose more money to begin with, but it will be better in the long run.  You can upgrade your miner for an extra colony ship, which well help you in the colony rush.  For initial buildings, I usually stick with mainly labs & factories, or if I get a good number of planets, dedicate some of them to nothing but making money and build lots of economic structures.  All of my planets are specialized in either tech, industry, or econ, which gives the most optimal results.  Early on for research I go with the first couple engine techs, so I can make faster colony ships, then research any of the techs which gives me inherent bonuses to econ, tech, industry, or population growth.  Once those are done, I can start pursuing higher level techs.

edit: Loup, we must have been writing at the same time.  You're too fast with the being helpful thing. ;)

As well as the time to do the research as to the version of game he has posted ;P

Prescott, untill you install Dark Avatar and/or Twilight of the Arnor, the miner comment won't help you.  That was a feature added in the DA expansion.

As for this, I'm not 100% sure on the localized version you are running, but the English version's patches can be downloaded via a program Stardock has called Impulse.  You must have the serial # for the game in order to register it to get the patches.  Here is the link to that program, note it isn't like other installation prgrams (Steam for example) that it isn't required to be running when you wish to play the game.  You just DL or patch through it, then close it until you want it again.

*edit*

I just thought of something about your region and expansions.  I've seen many posts around here talking about Kalypso (regional company for you I guess) is bundling the expansions together with some languages.  I think German is already available, perhapes more.

1.5 is the latest for DL, 1.8 for DA and 1.96 for TA.  The 2.0 patch that is all the buzz right now isn't yet released.
