This project had wrong priorities.

So its been four years since the first political machine, and I tell ya, I was hooked, I loved that game. So naturally, 2008 rolls around and I get stoked because surely, 4 years later the game would be even better.

 

At a glance it looks nice and polished, but having purchased it, I'm severely disappointed, and feel that the first game is almost superior. 

 

Why?

 

Well. while the first one had an absurd amount of characters,  (Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, various repetitive, unrealistic, or dumb candidates) this one completely lacks in them. You guys somehow had time to make Lord Kuna which is some kind of immature self-reference but not enough time to add FDR, one of the most important presidents ever?

 

I like that the ladders are shorter, but they're kinda screwy. Bill Clinton is not a hidden candidate so he didn't belong in the ladder unless you made him one and could have easily been taken out and rearranged to include... FDR or at least someone to unlock. I do approve of the addition of JFK he was sorely missed in the first one but George Washington being the leader of the Rep ladder is out of place ( It was weird in the first one too). It should be Lincoln to parallel JFK and John Adams should mirror Jefferson. 

 

I do like the new stats, and the new character creation is great, aside from the fact that I swear you guys tried your hardest to make Obama look creepy beyond belief. But. The stats are unfairly unbalanced. 

 

TV interviews are not forced so you can have zero intelligence or comeliness and survive perfectly fine, because apparently after 4 years you guys haven't come up with an easy way to do the debates. 

 

The debates are the climax of the presidential race. It is the confrontation of the two candidates. It doesn't feel right constantly competing against another player but never meeting him face to face. If I was in charge of this project I would have the debates within less than a month, 

 

All it has to be is a required event on a certain week, like picking a VP, and it is set up like a TV interview, only its a little longer, always asks questions on the top issues, and you have the chance to not only answer for yourself but having a higher intelligence will allow you to attack your opponents stance as well. Afterwards, an article pops up that analyzes who won the debate. It would add a lot of excitement to the game, I promise.

 

My final complaint is the inflexible campaigns. In the first one you could change what was going on in the nation at the time of the campaign which added some replay value, in this one instead you ask us to compete in 1860 (Which I like),  Europia and a self-reference... not a good trade if you asked me. A map editor would go a long ways instead of having to have people opening data files and hacking the Withdraw from Iraq to having Independents supporting (I personally like that independents are neutral) and so forth. 

 

But I guess if we had all this power, we would make the game more entertaining than you did, and wouldn't have to buy Political Machine 2012. I'll be hard-pressed to give it a chance when it does come around.

One of things we were hoping for was, by adding a fun and robust candidate creator, people would go wild making and swapping candidates amongst themselves.  Perhaps we didn't make things intuitive enough, cause (as you can see that ain't happening. #:( We're trying to rectify this by adding more candidates as updates are released.

Now this is something I agree with. Two more features we really wanted to get in were 1. debates and 2. a more interesting and cutthroat advertisement/speech system. He have some great ideas for them both but (excuses aside) we just couldn't get them in.

I hate to break it to you, but those sliders were pretty skin deep. Upon further digging, we found that those only had a slight effect on two issues. The lack varied campaigns were something that A LOT of reviewers harped on in 2004, so adding the new ones was a necessity. Could we have added more historical ones?  Perhaps. But the decision was made to put in some more abstract (and hopefully replayable) ones, and judging from the positive tone these got in reviews of 2008 I'd make that decision again.

Sorry that 2008 didn't live up to your expectations. We tried to get in all the features we got bashed on in 2004 but, unfortunatly, couldn't tackle them all. I'd do a post-mortem about it but, with PAX looming and new games needing made, I may not have the time.

We do appreciate you playing it, however, and know that your feedback will be factored in for any future poltical undertakings (a thought that currently sends chills up my spine).

I didn't mind at all, thanks for replying, and sorry for being so harsh.

You seem like a really cool guy. 

So about the candidates, I mean, personally, I liked creating candidates, but candidates who aren't official just don't feel right.

So while, I gladly made a Evan Bayh, I'd want a FDR with extra points, and unique graphics. (was the wheelchair a complication?)

About the variation in time periods. Yes, the 2004 one was skin-deep but it was something, you also had more tweaking such as randomizing electoral votes, etc.  I was expecting you guys to expand on that area in the way that you did with candidates. 

So while we can change how candidates feel towards issues, we could change how the people feel towards them as well. 

But likewise, if that happened, we could also probably just update the game when 2012 came around, by making our own candidates and changing the map, so you would lose a future product by making this one too good.

I still think the game is a very impressive set up, a lot of hard work has visibly been done, which is why its depressing to see it not polished to what it should be.

Probably because this is a seasonal 20 dollar game.

We don't save our ideas from this time around so we can sqeeze them into the sequel.  It's not like this is a "Madden" game that comes out every year.  As Scott points out, there were several things that we got dinged on in reviews of the 2004 edition that we wanted to fix this time around.  I think we added quite a bit to the game on top of that.  In the end though, there are only so many hours in a day and only so many days in the months that we spent on the game to get it out on time.  Besides, we have added free updates since then.

Everybody has their own ideas as to what the game "should be".  We have ours, you have yours, lots of other people have theirs.  The thing is, we're open to suggestions.  Not a lot of game companies can say that.

I started a thread for people to post their custom characters. (I started it out with Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun) I hope people will start doing this, because it would make the game a lot more interesting if we have a bunch of custom characters going around.

I agree that this game is a little bit on the lazy side.

How can you seriously say 'There aren't enough hours in a day' to get new features in!?

It has been 4 years since the last game, and as far as I can tell, you only changed

A) The graphics to make them fully 3D

B) The political capital system (which is broken, since beyond endorsements it's not quite so useful..)

C) Added a goofy scenario or two.

 

It's essentially the same as 2004. So if there are not enough hours for you to do anything substantive with the game, you probably had a four or five month development cycle or something. Which would be your first mistake..

The basic gameplay is the same, but the addition of scenarios is huge, and the abilily to customize candidate appearances is a pretty big deal as well.  Really, what more do you want?  The basic gameplay shouldn't be radically changed, that would just ruin it.  Plus, it costs 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of a normal new game, so quit whinning.
