Medium Computer Rapes me.....

Is it just me or is this game hard? I know I'm still new to this game and I feel like I've got the game curve down, but  I've only played 1v1v1v1 against AI and I always end up getting screw'd. I start out fine and 20 mintues into the game I seem to be able to push around the some opponents, then all the sudden I get pirates and 1-3 other enemies attacking all my planets and working together to destroy me within minutes. Am I missing something here? Because it seems everyone else is making alot more resources than I am because they are paying off the pirates to attack me and have way bigger fleets than I do, even after I have upgraded my ecomony and have  3-4 good planets. I can't get any leverage over them.

Maybe I'm just a super newb, and I hate to think that because I'm usually good at RTS's and I like to start on the hard settings.

Any help/ advice would be nice. I play as TEC

Try watching replays to see what the AIs do.

You may also want to try a game with allies and locked teams or with pirates off.

Try to accomplish some missions for AI's you may want to be friend with, or at least you don't want to fight for now. AI seems to go attacking the other guy they hate the most (AI or human) so having slightly better improved relations with them might helps keep them fight each other.

Another way to learn in the hard way is to go for online playing. Then when you go back fighting AI in solo game, you'll find it damn easy, even on higher difficulty settings.

Tip for solo gaming: build at least 1 or 2 hangars per planet to prevent roaming bombers to ruin your day, with a ration of 3 fighters for 1 bomber, since fighters are more effective on smaller ships such as scouts, lrm, siege frigates.

try to secure chokepoints so you won't have to defend multiple planets and concentrate on defending one or two planets. just don't over extend yourself by making a chokepoint. i was attacked by three AI once and i quit. it was frustrating. but i can beat hards now so chokepoints help alot. for TEC i usually get the Marza Dreadnaught. when it's lvled up to like 4 or 5 it's a tough ship to kill. so with him and a repair platform he's pretty good. and you have like 2000 Command points total, so don't be shy to buy a few more ships.
and yeah, turn off pirates if they are too strong. the only thing pirates are good for are annoying the enemy or lvling up your capitol ships :D

hope it helps?!?!

If you have the time you could play on a multi star map with only a few AI's so you can get a chance to experiment with tactics and such. not to mention pwn once you get control of one entile system

you have done way too much research, fleet is so very important. All of that tech means nothing if you only got 20 or so frigates.

Defiently Lock teams, the AI usually teams up on the player.

Upgrade the Infrastructure on all your planets soon as u aquire them, it reduces the negative credit stage.

Remember to watch the militry might icon down the bottom, if your not number 1 build more ships....if you are, its time to improve your economy/research.

Alot of players also wait to research LRMs then spam them as the main backbone of your fleet, this is great vsing computers since it counters there initial spam of frigs.

Play an Unfair computer, last long as you can then watch the replay.

Unlocked teams is by far and a way the easier option. As long as you're attacking your neighbour you're almost guaranteed to be getting points with most of the other races. So you can easily end up with a cease fire agreement with everyone except for closest neighbours who will generally be more interested in taking your planets than being friends.

Lock teams, no pirates, upgrade infrastructure (check credits window to find red negatives), more fleet than research at first then research to build fleet, research economic techs - and have fun!  :)

Pay your tributes! It is FAR cheaper to pay 400 credits NOW than to deal with 20 hostile ships LATER.

You may want to get tested for an STD then - because computers carry a lot of different viruses and what have you.

Make the pirates inactive, no matter how much money you spend on them the ai will outpay them, really frustrating having to constantly play circle jerk moving your ships to stop pirates or waste money building 35 tactical points worth of shit to stop them at every planet they might attack.

Thanks guys, that's alot of good info. I'll certainly try these strategies out. I'm a Firm believer in having a strong economy because it supports a strong Military but It's not always the best way. I'll experiment with everything. Thanks, and I'll get back.

P.S. I've been check out, I don't have a computer std :) (whew!)

Are you building trade and refineries ?

Without these on most planets, your missing a good deal of your income and resource potential.

Theres alot to learn here but you can manage with time. Perhaps if you start with several ai's on easy and only one on medium it will be better for you in the long run as you develop your skills more.

No, the higher the number the better. If it's lower its not very good.
