Formations?

Keeping everything together

I was just wondering if General Demigods would be able to form groups and then order them to form a certain formation.  This would be nice so that you could keep your army together and not have the faster units run off and then an enemy demigod comes in and kills all your catapultasauri or something.

Supreme Commander, the engine that Demigod is using has formation move, so the code is definitely there. However, Supreme Commander formation was always a little buggy for two reasons:

a. The units moved in formation at a slower speed then they had too. For example if you formation move all of the same unit, it moved slower than the unit would move normally.

b. When you set up a formation move for units all over the map, units at the front moved way back to start the formation move near the back of the lines, which makes it hard to manage.

I hope it's still in there, and that it works better in demigod. It might not be so useful considering we're unsure as to the average size of a general's army, but It would be nice to see.

Demigod does use a smaller scale and that would at least help with some of supcoms problems, From all the screens and the trailer we saw recently, i've only see the Generals units following him/her around though, so it might not even be a relevant request(i hope that it is) but we don;t yet know the full mechanics of Generals yet

Some differend formations would be nice. In SupCom the formations are limited to 1 formation. Maybe they could make it more like in Age of Empires.

Rooks hammer comes down and smashes your formation just hope your reinforcements come grouped together for Hammer #2 :SNIFF!:

In my opinion, for a game like this the 2 best formation systems i tried were, warcraft 3 (minimal configuration and custumization but very effective) and Rise of Nations (simple click and drag direction and formation type.

Maybe a mix of the both would be just perfect.

I remember an old RTS where I could arrange units how i want, like archers in back, and make a custom formation and they'd stay like that.. Age of Empires 2 I think

C&C had really good grouping aswell. Exactly the same as warcrafts actually.

I think you could have formation options like in aoe and aom where you could have a line, staggered line, box, spread out, flank, etc. that way you could select what sort of formation to use for a certain situation. or maybe something like the method of making formations in LOTR BFME 2 where you drag your mouse to preveiw and adjust the formation. maybe you could have a blend of both where you can select the type of formation, than adjust it to your preferences. I just want something that will keep my fast escort units from abandoning my siege units.
