Can you help me?

Hi Guys!

I haven't been playing games for a long time now. Last game being Fear and the one before that was KOTOR 2.

Well, I played Fear only for awhile as it was a gift from a client who worked there.

Anyway, I was looking at SoaSE and it reminded me somewhat of MOO - Masters of Orion. lol.. I think i'm getting old but the game seemed a little diffcult to play and I tried all the tutorials before embarking on a small map scenario.

1st Game : Died after playing like 6 hours.

Analysis: I realized that I really need to explore and colonize other planets but I couldn't do that because I was too weak. I used Advent.

2nd Game : Won. after 4 hours

Analysis: I used Vasari in this scenario and only focused on trying to get my weapons up asap. I was still very weak and not able to colonize other planets due to the rest of the planets being ICE or very strong ships around the area.

I took a gamble and realized that 1 chap was slightly stronger than all of us and what I did was to complete the quests to hit the strong chap and use politics to survive.. that ended with another AI being friendly with me and also not attacking me at least in that case i could focus on building my fleet.

I just want to find out from all the seasoned players, in the game, do you find it necessary to manipulate the rest of the AI if you are playing against the computers?

How does one also build up all the research? the planets don't have so much space..

Its really an intriguing game and I really hope you guys can help me with some advice.

In general, yes. Especially on the higher AI difficulties, it can be very tough when you're being attacked from 2-3 sides by 2-3 AIs. You can't possibly afford very strong defenses at each one early on, and if you keep your main fleet defensive only they'll soon out-do you on ship production and research. The more friends you can make earlier, the better. I always build 2 scouts as soon as the game starts and send them out. And, I always try to befriend all of my neighbors. And I do all because after the first "give me resources" mission, you don't really know what they'll offer you. The second mission I may not be able to complete easily from one AI, but can do with no sweat from another - then I do that one, and the other becomes my primary target, since he's on my border and my other border now has a cease-fire.

More planets, and Logistics upgrades :) All planets are able to upgrade their logistics and tactical capacity so you can fit more stuff. Asteroids start with 6 and get 12 with one upgrade and max there. Ice, volcanics, terrans have more (20-24 I think), and desert have the most of all (36) when fully upgraded.

Dead asteroids and pirate bases don't get logistics structures normally, though. However, TEC gets a research to add an extra logistics structure to every owned world, Advent gets an upgrade to add tactical slots, while Vasari gets an upgrade to add fleet supply.

Like how I can get novaliths thanks to TECs research getting me more labs and not wasting time and resources colonizing dead asteroids. :d

Dead rocks make pretty good chokepoints if you can get it in a good spot, though. ;)

Cheap to develop, and you don't lose anything if they get bombed. And the AI will just try to attack it even though it's completely worthless, giving you enough time to get a fleet there and saving yourself from having to rebuild around a productive planet :)
