Little strategy help?

So I've been playing GC for a long time, on and off, here and there. I like my basic strategy of all-banks on the first world, all labs for two years on other worlds, then switch to all-factories and churn out the war machine. I disable tech trading, and go slow if need be in the first year to develop population and economy. My all-lab/factory worlds usually add a farm if there's room, for more people, and I use breeding abilities to speed up the taxables. I typically research some dip, then some research, then more dip, weaps/miniaturization/hulls, then I research up good factories before I switch. This all works decently well for me, and by focusing my abilities and gov't primarily on econ, I avoid the pain of staying on the razor's edge of -500, which I just don't find enjoyable.  I also last out two years as opposed to one or 1.5 for the research because I'm really a tech fanatic when it comes to 4X games.  I only war because I have to!

But I have a few holes in my overall strategy: I regularly lose out on the second wave of colonization. I still don't know whether to buy my first colony ship, and I stress out about exploring the galaxy around me; it feels like I'm still way too slow on the first colony rush, but it's usually that second wave (grabbing the small leftover planets) where I lose out. On a larger galaxy, I definitely colonize fewer planets in the first rush, too. What are the best colonization strategies?

Secondly, I feel blind regarding the one-turn war. I do okay with it -- here's what I do. I develop fleets of 24-logistics points: two large ships with HEAVY weaponry (and low defense, because I hate trying to match it up), and two cargo-hull transports with two advanced troop carriers each. Speed winds up around 7-10. Then I take two of these fleets to park by each major planet they have. They declare, and I attack. Again, it's the little-planet cleanup that I hate, but I almost always eat their capital planets right up. Is that about right? Is there a better fleeting strategy? I really don't know anything about the "proven" fleet strategies for this tactic; this is just my blind guess.

For later wars, I keep the non-transport ships and upgrade them as necessary, always watching my money to make sure I can!  The HP bonus is entirely worth it.  This also confuses me, though: why do I go with SO MANY factories, when I start WAY out-producing what I can upkeep, and WAY WAY outproducing what it takes to win a war?  In a few turns, I have a war machine capable of a one-turn takedown.  In the future, I think I may start trying an every-other-planet all-banks strategy; unlike labs vs. factories, it won't waste any slider space.  With enough breeding, the maintenance is negligible.

Any other advice would, of course, be handy. I'm just playing challenging games so far, but I'd like to move up the ladder. I'm doing just fine, but I want to solidify my methods first! :)

Thanks for the insight on my other post, and don't feel left out, I play on Normal still. LOL!!!

About your All-Labs/Factories thing, I would not have the patience to do that. It is just too anoying to keep switching back and forth in between the two. The fact that you can pull it off is amazing to me. :HOT:  In my opinion however, it's UnGodly!!! ;p

About your colonization troubles.........
I thought of placing Sensor laden colonizers beside whichever planets you want at the fringes of your colonizers range. Due to the fact that they have a Shitload of Sensors, you can detect enemy colonizers on route to those planets, colonizing them yourself as soon as the enemy gets too close. By doing this you can colonize the other High/Low class planets on the inside of your empire at your leisure, only needing to go into deficit if absolutely necessary. If you have a lot of money (however you managed to get it), you can attempt to buy these colony ships before they reach their destination. I have by the way never tried this colonization strategy but I'm thinking about it. If I do decide to try it I'll be sure to post it.

And although it's off topic, if you have a planet that has low morale due to a high population, you can build a colony ship on it (preferably one that can hold a 1000 plus colonists, but regular colonizers work too), load it up with colonists, and sell it to one of the major races. If you sell it to a minor race, they will start colonizing like you wouldn't believe!!! ;p  It's just crazy!!! :( So if you do decide to sell it to a minor race, you can kiss all your planets good-bye!!! :SNIFF!: At that point, that "minor" race will have turned into a major race with a Hell good economy. So in a word don't do it.

Hope this helps.

Is there any validity to this? A minor race will colonize another planet? Have you witnessed this? If so, I find this hilarious and would like to do it.

I also know it's OT, but I gotta say that's AWESOME! :CONGRAT: Having a minor race going nuts with colonizing would add a lot to the game. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the insight!

+1 Karma, but if I had 10 to give, they'd be yours. :D

In my recent game a minor race declared war on one of the major races. The minors did quite well in the war, pretty soon they were everywhere :)

I tested this. I sold 3 colony ships to the Paulos and they colonized planets with them. I have a screen shot but I'm too lazy to figure out how to put it on here.

I just figured that out a few hours ago. You have to upload it to somewhere like www.imageshack.us, and surround the direct link to the image with the tags . (Direct, as in not the suggestions they give you for posting it in forums.) Apparently it doesn't work if the letters in the tags are in lowercase like . They have to be uppercase.

Another OT question about: Karma.

What in the heck is it??? ;p  Why do people like Kryo, Mumblefratz, Piznit, Etc. have so much??? ;p  What are other ways of getting it??? ;p  I'm confused as hell about it??? ;p

In the bottom left corner of each comment, there is a thumbs up symbol. This is the karma icon. When someone does/says something helpful, funny, for whatever reason u want that makes u wanna give them karma, click on it for whichever comment u want to give it to them for.

Then type in what it tells u and bang u gave em karma.

But the manual says that minor races don't expand or factor into victory conditions. I wouldn't know, because I've never played with them before.

I didn't help at all though. :P I was just telling Inches how to post a screenshot here.

Minor races don't expand, in that they do not ever construct colony ships to send out to create additional colonies. However, apparently as we have learned, if they are given a colony ship, they will use it for its intended purpose of colonization, thereby expanding in an uncharacteristic and roundabout manner.

As Inches said, it's for recognizing helpful or entertaining posts.

In that light, someone asked a question in my karma about giving someone karma. A PM or post would be a more appropriate place for that, plus I don't know who to respond to in a karma comment.

But since it came from this thread, I'll answer here. Most of us can only give +1 karma out at a time. There are others who have higher "ranks" who can give out more. As far as how to give a +10 at one time, I'd suggest changing your name to Brad and starting a multi-million dollar software company. That would probably be the easiest way. ;)
