Trying to update from 1.01 to 1.01a... freaking nightmare

Hi. I've followed all the instructions in the link for registering. Stardock central shows that I've got GalCiv 1.01 installed and that I can update to 1.01a. When I click update it tries to download 84 MEGS worth of crap!

How do I find out how big the update is?
How do I stop it from downloading the whole damn game? I paid retail for a reason. My ISP won't allow extended downloads and 84 MB would take me between 4 hours and two days depending on local traffic.

Allow me to add my voice to the growing group of people who want to know why we have to use some potentially dangerous Nazi installer(Stardock Central) just to get a patch for a game that we bought retail. I've spent two days trying to get this bloody thing updated. I just want the bug fixes, like the multiple 'unique' Wonders and Trade Goods problems. Do I really have to download 84 MB just for a few bug fixes? What Gives?

Great game, but pissed of at the way updating works (or doesn't work... yet)

"How do I find out how big the update is?"

You ask, like that. Having downloaded it, I tell you it's roughly 1MB. :)

"How do I stop it from downloading the whole damn game?"

You look around the numerous downloading problems threads around here. I haven't had the problems personally, but here's a brief compendium of some of the more common suggestions:

1- click Tools --> Refresh Application Data
2- make sure you're using the Atlanta server (Tools --> Settings --> Connection)
3- make sure you're using the latest build of SDC (build 4, I believe... Help --> About)
4- throw things ;)

It worked for me.
Retail version.
Installed and updated yesterday evening.

Nothing odd, no changes to the default settings.
I didn't notice any way to determine file size though. And no way to abort it once it started. However, the downloads were quick (ADSL).

"I didn't notice any way to determine file size though."

When you click on the GalCiv listing the description on the left side of the screen has the file size of the most recent update.

Well, I've been downloading the update for an hour and it's at 8% complete. That's not too bad, only 9.5 more hours to go. I'm going to have to interrupt this and try again another time.

-sigh- the game is sooo good, but the multiple wonders bug kills it. I just want the bugfix -snif-

Don't hold your breath. As of 1.01a.033 it still wasn't fixed, and I see no mention of it in the 1.01a.034 list.

I've had the exact same problem Merf and gave up after wasting two days trying thread suggestions. I agree it's a big game cramper... :sniff!:

Hmm... thanks Ash. I could have sworn FrogBoy said it was fixed in 1.01a. But I could be wrong.

Nice to see you here. I'm Orgull from the GoneGold Forum. I love your 'zealous' GalCiv posts over there

He did. It isn't. Let's crucify him. ;)

Why thank you. I'm starting to get zealous over here, too... CURSE YOU FROGBOY FOR RUINING MY GRADES! ;) You're welcome to join the GG metaverse empire, if you like. :)

actually multiple wonders is fixed for me... i was building diplomatic translators, and when it was half done, drengin just finished it, the next turn i had social building queue empty... and of course no option to build it, so i guess its fixed, at least for diplomatic translators ;)

Merf, I had a similar prob with my retail version trying to download the 80mb file a few days back. What I ended up doing is uninstalling Stardock and then reinstalling the game from the CD. Then go ahead and add Stardock and register and then do all game updates from Stardock. I've had no probs since and the biggest update was around 4mb and am up to version 1.01a.034 as of today. If you added the traditional patch on to the game(7-8mb) that is available on this site it seems to make Stardock think you need the 80mb file everytime you update. The last couple updates have only been around 1mb...so this is the way to go if you want quite regular fixes and updates. If you don't like the service then prolly patch and then wait for another major patch and then update again.

Hi,
Try this:
Uninstall GalCiv. Do *NOT* uninstall StarDock Central.

Reinstall GalCiv.
Go to Stardock Central and get the MUlti-media and Bonus Pack.
Then get the updates.
This worked for me.

One other thing (not sure if it matters) but:

Before reinstalling GalCiv, go into Stardock Central and set everything to 'Uninstalled' (by hitting the 'Uninstall' button), if you didn't uninstall from Stardock Central.

I updated my retail version from Stardock Central...it was a snap. It didn't even mess up my saved game. I think the part about Tools --> Refresh Application Data is critical.

My question: is there a way that I can get the version number from within the game. I would really like to be able to see that I am running 1.01a instead of 1.01.

No, SDC is the only place to see the full version number. At least, not to the best of my knowledge... (I do like to cover my ass when making declarative comments like that ;)).

In the options menu on 1.01A and later you can see that it is 1.01.

I take it that it is, indeed, impossible to see the full version number (like 1.01a.034) in-game?

Well going from the "unofficial" 1.01A to the "official" 1.01A was a nightmare. I was forced to uninstall and start from stratch, and that was a mess for a while as well. By the 3rd re-install it finally behaved in an acceptable manner (altho it apparently "wants" me to "update" multimedia v1.0.000 with multimedia v1.0 dated 2/18/03). That didn't read as appropriate to me. I abhor the update methodology.

Well, thank you everyone who posted here. I finally got updated. The hard way. It took a surprisingly short 6 hours to download 84MB at 56k dialup speeds and for some unknown reason, my ISP didn't cut me off. Sweet. Now to go test the bug fixes... There's not much point building wonders if everyone else can build them.

juice99. I had that happen, I was building Galactic Stock Exchange, and one turn before I had it, A FREAKING MINOR RACE built it. My queue was empty. But two turns tlater the Drengin built one. And next turn the Arcaens. It just makes me mad man. Three years of work down the tubes with no warning time to switch to something else. And then everyone but me gets to have one.

-sigh- Still one of the best games I've played so far this year.
