WB on Vista is borked

WB on Vista is borked

Clean install of Vista, latest vid drivers for geforce 8600.

Took 3 tries just to get WB to install...having to disable all antivirus and windows defender was bullcrap. :(

Seemed to be fine after the 3rd time but on reboot today...the wrong skin is being used,WB loaded diamond with no window skinning at all...no frames,no buttons, classic menus.

Cant go back to aero, cant change skins, cant unload WB.This is not helping me get over my dislike of Vista...or skinning it.

Havnt even launched SKS6 yet...GOD help me. X-(

cant run Vista...how to install?

There's always safe mode...F8 at boot up, choose safe mode.
UAC is off...naturally...left it on for 2 days and said bye bye

Try booting into safe mode and restore it to a time that it ran OK. Then roll back your Video drivers to the ones in December and install DirectX 9.

I also had trouble installing WB from Impulse. My problem was WB want's a reboot every time Windows loads. It will not run at all. I uninstalled in SDC & reintalled from SDC and it works fine. Not sure that this tidbit of info helps you but knowing it couldn't hurt.

Safe mode unavailable...restore points get deleted in Vista because of dual boot with XP...Vista sux. :(

Did the SDC bit...things just got worse. :(

Have you tried booting to your Vista DVD and repairing your install?
No...and am not going to...I give up.(but thanks all for trying to help)

Replaced the dll from XP into Vista...no luck...Vista boots but then you get errors and it wont let explorer run.

BYE bye WB and Vista...I only did this to vistafy my latest WB and Its not worth this much headache.

Aaaaaaaaaaah...good ole XP. ;)

  Bad Vista Karma. ;)

It knows you've talked shit about it. ;)

Now you have little choice but to do a clean install of Vista. ;)

Hold on....ya left out the dual boot part. Is this a Vista 'upgrade' install??

No,it was fresh install on a seperate drive...ran fine til I installed WB.

Gone now...drive is nothing but storage...but joy o joy...XP now has classic frames and menus.(and no start menu mouseovers)

I had to do a boot wipe on the vista disk to reformat...then at least XP would touch it...XP wouldnt reformat a Vista disk.

This latest rc of WB is a POS...XP and Vista were on SEPERATE drives...not partitions.Common scenario here so far is using Impulse to download latest rc of WB on both OS's.

I'm about to quit skinning and go play video games.   :( 3 days lost and I still have problems...and just when I was starting to not HATE Vista...this crap happens. :p

I would NEVER run Vista without backup from XP.

With good reason obviously...I wouldnt be here now without XP...Vista was screwed ;)

Actually, it was/is the Windows boot manager that bite your ass....

Left to itself, Vista runs fine (as does XP).

I would NEVER run Vista without backup from XP

.....hate to say it, but, in not going one way or the other, you screwed yourself..... ;)

Anyone up for a nice game of chess????????

Booting was fine on a previous Vista install...XP,then Vista and you get a proper choice(this was on the same drive)
Took that drive...blanked it out and just installed vista...booted fine...could still choose XP from another drive.
Install WB.....kabloooie! X-( (suspicious that 2 seperate OS's on 2 seperate drives are now acting screwy after installing latest rc of WB)...hmmmmmmm? ;)  :(

Luna werkz...

Well, if you're hell bent on the dual boot, then the proper order of install is Vista, then XP....that way, if Vista takes a dive, XP is unscathed. For the life of me, I can't fathom anything WB could have done to create these kind of problems....I'm confident, we're missing something really fucking simple here..... :NOTSURE:

The way you installed the dual boot, my guess is when you boot into either OS, you can see both file systems. If you can....it can....

Every website I went to said the same thing ...XP first(already installed anyway),Vista second.

Shouldnt matter at all if they are on seperate drives...my bios gives me a boot menu.

When I originally dual booted...they were on seperate partitions of the same drive...Vista was installed to the second part and everything was hunky dory...WB didnt screw up booting or choosing which os to boot to...it just wacked Vista.(and this was after blanking the dual boot drive and just installing Vista fresh)(there was at one time,2 XP's and one Vista install...all working fine...no boot issues at all)

A reinstall of WB on XP has fixed XP for now. ;) (the XP issue may have been caused by the cmos reset setting the clock to 2005...fixed the clock, reinstalled WB and all is good in XP land) :)

Sorry Vista users...I was trying to vistafy ecoLogical and then move on to updating all my older masterskins...now I just dont feel like doing this all again. :SNIFF!:

A WB skinner HAS to dual boot and WB HAS to work on both.

Until I build a new pc(need money)...Vista will have to do without me...I'm sure it will be ok. ;)

VirtualPC or VMWare?

MS VM: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/default.mspx
XP VM (expires every three months but a new one is released: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en

No per pixel (I think)

I've started playing with VirtualBox too.  I like the snapshot feature.

I just built a pc for a 'friend'...quadcore,dual sli graphics, sli memory(whatever that is),big fancy copper butterfly heatsink,26inch monitor...and this guy can barely open an email...he managed to download some virus from my space and trashed the OS in 2 weeks.

About 1500$ total...couple a weeks ago I see one with almost the same specs for 6 or 700$ without the 2nd graphics card and monitor.
