Just another Terran AAR

I guess humans are "teh win"

Good morning chaps and chapettes,

This here will be my first AAR ever, so I'm quite anxious to learn what you guys think. It's about us, the silly willy humans. Yes, I know, there are like 1.3 million Terran AARs online already, however I find it easier to write from a perspective I can quickly relate to - and since it's my first time I ask you to be gentle...  :D  Should you be tired of another pink skin AAR, I suggest you stop reading here. ;) My next report (if there will be one) will be about an alien race I created some time ago.

I have been inspired to write this by many of the wonderful AARs posted here and will try my best to present to you an interesting read - your comments, suggestions and (constructive :P) criticisms are more than welcome.

Ah well, before I start telling you childhood stories - let's begin, shall we?

Game settings

Two more notes: I'm a geeky role playing kinda guy, I usually create stories in my head when I play GalCiv. I'll do the same here, present the AAR in form of a story. I'll try my best to build in some new elements we haven't seen in other AARs before, though. :)

Second note: English is not my mother tongue, so feel free to ignore grammatical and spelling errors (or teach me how to do it right if you're in the mood, both are appreciated). That being said: I hope you have fun! :)

The story so far…

2020 – Oil reserves on Earth are almost spent due to critical mismanagement and wastefulness by most superpower nations. Most of these superpowers fight wars against the few countries which are still controlling the last remaining fossil fuel sources.
2034 - 2042 – Most small to middle sized nations lose independence to war mongering countries. The European Union officially declares political unity, establishing a single central government in Brussels, while expanding military operations in the Middle East and Africa. The United States of America annex Mexico and Canada to gain control of vital resources after eight years of war. Many of the still unconquered African nations join in a great alliance to create a new superpower and counter the European imperialism.
2050 – Micronesia, Japan, China and Russia sign the Treaty of Unification in Tokyo, creating the Central Asian Hegemony. Most Asian nations join the CAH a few month after the signing, the rest are conquered over the years.
2051 – The North American Republic and the European Union sign a non-aggression treaty and defensive pact against the Central Asian Hegemony.
2062 – Civil wars and revolutions in South America end; all South American states officially join their northern neighbor. Australia and New Zealand join the European Union in an economic and military alliance.
2071 – 2083 – World War 3. America and Europe / Australia declare war on Asia. According to history records, the declaration of war was meant as a preemptive strike. However, it is difficult to sort out propaganda from truth, as most records are damaged or lost. The world’s population is reduced to approx. 5.9 billion from 7.3 billion.
March 17, 2083 – Allied troops defeat Asia’s last line of defense near Beijing. According to our records, the Alliance soldiers were greeted as liberators by the people. This is highly disputable. The central Asian government was dissolved, Asian territories surrender to the allied forces.
2109 – 2111 – The Middle Eastern nations and the African Alliance, war torn and mostly destroyed by each other and the superpowers, officially request to join the American-Eurasian Alliance in order to bring stability back to the regions. The treaty is signed by all parties after two years of negotiations.
February 2, 2141 – Prof. Dr. André Chaville publishes his Unified Cold Fusion Theory at the Académie Européenne des Sciences in Paris. Most scientists disregard his theory as a mad mans delusion.
November 11, 2169 – The first successful start of a cold fusion reactor is accomplished in Munich, former Germany, by scientists at the Technische Universität. Most states within the Grand Alliance are astonished but scared, as the European Union now has the most powerful source of energy on the planet at their disposal. However, balance is kept due to Americas still superior military might and war is avoided.
January 2, 2174 – President Raymond Charles Dakota II of America proposed the treaty of New York, suggesting that the Grand Alliance officially establishes a central government, to avoid any further bloodshed. By civil vote, the Alliance accepts the proposal. The senate of the new Republic of Earth is established in Zurich of former Switzerland. The day is declared Earth Day, a worldwide celebration.
2198 – Cold fusion technology has been spread throughout the world, finally ending the resource crisis that plagued mankind for almost two centuries. On March 13, the Senate signs the “Bill of Human Exploration and Expansion”, resuming space programs that were abandoned long ago.
September 17, 2201 – Dr. Catherine Chamberlain reveals a new propulsion system prototype at the scientific summit in Seattle, based on cold fusion technology. Her new engine is dubbed Hyper Drive. First successful tests are commenced 3 months later.
January 2, 2203 – The Senate orders the construction of three great starships based on Hyper Drive technology: A space miner to harvest resources from asteroids in the Sol system, a colony vessel to send to Mars, and a science vessel, build for long range exploration. The construction took over 20 years due to a rather brutish trial and error approach. At the same time construction began on a central starport, located in the middle of former China.
2225 - January 1, 2227 – Earth’s first colony ship, the Majestic, is sent to Mars. The Senate of Earth declares that the human race shall now be united as the Terran Republic, as a sign that mankind is no longer bound to the cradle, Earth. Senator Sarah Johanson is elected first President of the Interstellar Republic of the Terran People. Tomorrow, on Earth Day, our science vessel, the TRS Chamberlain, will launch into deep space.

Chapter I – A small step for me…

He never thought that he would feel at home here. The humming of the engines, the constant chatter of his crew, the clicks and clacks of the computer terminals they use – he thought he would miss the hydroponic gardens of Osaka, his refuge from the megacity domes of Japan. But in its own way, this place was just as peaceful. You just had to see it.

And now his mission was to take this gigantic piece of technology into the silent depths of the void. His ancestors would be proud though, as he was continuing a long tradition of Japanese naval officers. Only this time his flag would be Terra, not the Rising Sun they used to sail under.

Tomohiro Murasaki was selected from a large pool of capable officers. He bested them all after two exhausting years of training, briefings, screenings, conditioning… but it was well worth it. He would do what his race dreamed of for so many centuries. He would traverse the greatest ocean of them all.

“You look worried, sir. Everything alright?”

The voice of his first officer disconnected him from his thoughts and a smile escaped his usually stern face.

“It’s nothing, Günther. Just an old man’s sentimentality I guess. Status report.”

“The reactor is running at one hundred, sir. The last supply ship just left docking bay, all stations report condition green. We’re ready to take her out. There’s just one thing left I believe.”

“Yes… the speech. Why do politicians have to hold a speech at every occasion they can get?”

Commander Schneider could not hide his amusement. “The opportunity to present oneself before an entire race is to them what candlelight is to a moth, sir. I doubt we can get around that.”

“Very well. Let’s just see what Her Highness has to say to us, shall we? Signal Central Command that we’re good to go and that we are eagerly awaiting the president’s speech.”

“Aye aye, captain.”

----

“Damn, ‘s more crowded thannn new years eve, eh?”

Josh was right, he has never seen Times Square packed so full of people. Then again, it actually was the first time a science fiction movie would become reality. Humans would leave their solar system and finally breach that last barrier. Exciting times… at least for them. Henry was still a student at NYU. Space exploration was his sole dream, yet, it was only a dream for now. Perstare et praestare. To persevere and to excel. In the recent weeks, these words really started to mean something to him.

“Dude, man, think isss gonna happen ssssoon, mate. President ‘s on screen!”

God almighty, Josh was drunk. Granted, it was Earth Day, and students worldwide traditionally celebrated by consuming their own body weight in alcohol. But Henry found it necessary to witness this as sober as he ever would be.

Josh was right again though: the two hour long documentary about mankind’s stony road to the stars was finally over. And then, Times Square fell silent, as president Johanson started to speak.

“My fellow citizens of Earth and our brave pioneers on Dakota colony on Mars, I greet you. Today, the 2nd of January 2227, our first long range starship will leave the Sol system. Their path is unknown, and their future challenges undreamed of. But we selected our best, our brightest, our strongest for this extraordinary mission. Our faith goes with them, and the hope of our species rests on their shoulders.”

Oh boy, was she trying to scare the crew to death?

“But we know that they will prevail, as mankind always will prevail. No trail can be too dangerous, no task will seem impossible. Together, as one people, we will reach out for the stars and the unknown. Let this be the greatest day of our Republic so far.”

The view screen switched from the president’s office to Central Command in China. A man in a dark blue uniform and the Insignia of Terra on his arms started to speak into a microphone.

“CC to TRS Chamberlain. The president has given you green light. Earth is with you my friends. Permission to leave orbit is green.”

“Chamberlain to Earth. Thank you all. We’ll see you on the other side.”

Then, the screen switched to the high resolution cameras of Luna Base and the Chamberlain could be seen. It broke orbit, gained speed and vanished in a bright flash of light.

“This is Central Command. Chamberlain just breached the FTL barrier. Launch successful.”

The crowd exploded. The cheers (probably drunken cheers) made Henrys ears hurt, but he did not care at all. Adrenaline was pumping through his veins, and a grin graced his face that they would most likely need to remove surgically. He could not wait to learn what the crew of the Chamberlain would discover out there.

Good so far, keep up the good work!

Thank you General! :D By the way, it was your Earth Federation that made me finally start my own story. You should update more often... :P Pretty please? :)

Chapter II, pt. 1 – “It’s paradise, sir.”

The first two months of the voyage were not as exciting as the press at home made the people believe. The Chamberlain’s route lead her through two star systems, where CC hoped for, well, something. What they actually found in the Amber and Brindle systems were giant versions of Luna, Earths satellite. The gravity of those things was so intense that the landing robot couldn’t really compensate. They pulled the already heavily damaged machine from the surface just 15 minutes after landing.

“At least we got a set of shiny, shiny rocks, eh?” Commander Schneider said to one of the ensigns. But that was pretty much it – until the 1st of March. They entered the Tacitus system as scheduled, to analyze a strange, purple star that didn’t really match any of the specifications in their databases. It was breathtakingly beautiful, emitting a rather soft light. What they found was two gas giants - and a planet with water.

“Water? Are you sure lieutenant?”

“I’m positive, captain. Scanners pick up large oceans of what appears to be H2O, sir. They’re just… purple, thanks to the sun here.”

“Take us into orbit. I want a full scale analysis.”

The planet was gigantic, easily twice the size of Earth. However, it appeared to present itself in perfect conditions for human life. Gravity, pressure, atmosphere – it almost seemed like it was screaming ‘stay here!’ at them. What was most astonishing though was not only the conditions the planet had, it was that magical number the ship’s computer attached to it. The screens read ‘Class: 26’.

“Guess we have something to report now. What do you think, sir?”

“I think you’re on to something here, Günther. Prepare a subspace comlink to Central Command. Tell them we found… paradise.”

I got some bad news for you.
2229 you will declare war on the Torians just because they want to invade some minor race that lies within your (future) territory.
Subsequently the Torians will bribe the Drengin, the Arceans and the Krynn (you must have forgotten about them) to declare war on you.
By 2230 you will be extinct....and be the first major race in the galaxy to bite the dust.

sorry 'bout that.

edit:
btw, don't let my comment stop you from continuing your AAR. I just felt the urge to derail some thread ;P
