Of the Arnor

Like my previous one I have skipped the beginning of the game and I will start once I start to accumulate weapons and prepare for war.

I have returned to the Corata sector to destroy the Dread Lord and Korath bases.

For the picture imagine a Yuzhan Vong in full body armor, but I can’t change it.  (Sigh)

My most advanced weapon is a Rail Gun MK II.  I control most of the galaxy, but am struggling from debt in the colonization rush and the building up of all my planets.  Also my population hasn’t had time to grow seeing as they have all been sent out to colonize new planets.  The Korath already have a fleet Tykoski II and it won’t be long before transports arrive to.  To sum it up my position is that of the US at the beginning of WWII in the Pacific.  I didn’t have very much military and my enemies have very fortified base worlds.  If the war continues to last more than a year, however, that I will almost definitely win.

The Vengeance class starship is built with extremely good engines, but only carries one attack with its rail gun MK II.  This ship will be used in fast strikes that go near Dread Lord worlds.  It is also equipped with a reinforced hull plate that will give it more hit points.

I design my military starship.

And speaking of reinforced hull plates I got the idea to put them onto a cargo hull.

The Korath have mining and a Starbase in the SW portion of the Galaxy.  The Dread Lords are there to.  The Korath also have many starbases in my space.  I will first secure my territory in Operation Deep Space 9…

Operation Deep Space 9 8 May-8 Aug 2229

My plan is to retake my territory and destroy the Korath starbases in my territory. My two problems are that to build up for this I will go bankrupt, and that the Korath planet of Tykoski III is right on my border and could be a hindrance to me. I will go temporarily into debt to built one Battle Carrier that I will use to destroy the Korath ships in my territory and above Tykoski III. The TAS Defiant is in the system. This will be the big test to see if the Reinforced Hull Plating worked. If it destroys the defender in orbit of Tykoski III I am almost able to invade. Just a couple more weeks and Tykoski III will be mine.

The end result is that I win the battle, but the Korath ship really hits me hard. I will have to modify the design with some heavier weapons, but the theory of what I did worked perfectly.

The defiant returns to Begle I for repairs and I set to building the weaker, but more affordable Vengeance Class Starships.

While the TAS Defiant is repairing a Korath Fleet begins to approach Begle I. They don’t have very good engines so they are still at least 3 weeks away. By now I have several Vengeance Class Ships around Begle I. I will first engage the Vengeances and then bring out the Defiant. However there is a logistics problem and the fleet will instead consist of the TAS Defiant and the TAS Intrepid.

Both fleets have an attack of 3 and my fleet has 59 hit points compared to their 30. Also my fleet is faster, though that won’t make a difference because we are so close. Also my fleet will have fist strike advantage. The largest advantage of the Korath ships is that they are much cheaper. My fleet of two ships costs 702 bc while their fleet of three only costs 168 bc. I order the attack.

I lose the Intrepid. Will the Defiant be enough to take on the two remaining Korath ships?

The answer: Yes

Now the area is secure I begin work on a constructor that will take over a military resource that used to be a Korath Starbase.

Also I do some intelligence work and find out that there aren’t many Korath ships in orbit of their planets. This means that the bulk of their military is off planet and probably heading towards me.

The Dread Lords are also a problem. They already have a Transport and a, Escort and they could invade any of my planets. In my experience light Fighters are most effective against them. I design the Mercury Class Fighter.

Also in order to have a cheap ship that I can produce in numbers I designed the Orbital Class Fighter.

I have another problem. Another Korath fleet identical to the first one has begun to approach Begle I. The TAS Defiant is still in repairs and won’t be able to counter them well. I change production to Orbital Class Fighters

I have another problem. It is actually three Korath fleets, Gulp.

I can’t take this on. I begin to withdraw from Begle I. I will retreat to Brindle II while my home world takes over production. I will keep making the affordable Orbital Class fighters. I will dig in and pray that the Dread Lords don’t come.

The TAS Defiant and the TAS Vengeance slip away while the 1st Fighter Squadron prepares to defend Begle to the last.

Also more fleets appear. This is hopeless. I call Operation Deep Space 9 to a close and prepare for operation Counterstrike…

Operation Counterstrike 8 Aug-1 Nov 2229

The Korath have attacked Begle I with everything they have. The 1st Fighter Squadron is attacked on 15 Aug 2229.

Lots of fire is exchanged and the 1st Fighter Squadron is destroyed with the enemy taking no casualties. I will need to re-design the Orbital with two weapons.

Production is halted on Wardell II so I can crank up research. I will go way into debt, but upgrading the Orbital is too important.

I will have to grind production to a halt to get out of debt. The only good news is that I have yet to see a transport ship.

Also on the other side of the Galaxy my mining bases are about to rebel to the Korath Clan. I decommission them to minimize the damage.

It is time that I attacked, but they are too strong around Begle I. I will attack them in the SW portion of the galaxy. They have no defenses there and lots of mining. I will assign the TAS Defiant to take them out and hopefully gain some experience.

Suddenly disaster strikes. It was a disaster worse than the Korath offensive or losing the 1st Fighter Squadron. The TAS Defiant was attacked by a Dread Lord. The TAS Defiant is tough, but the Dread Lord kills it in one hit.

Now I don’t have a flagship and it seems the Dread Lords might start an offensive against me. Normally I would just surrender now, but I want to see what will happen. As far as I know they only have 3 ships and one is a transport, but they are faster and much stronger than my ships. One Dread Lord could destroy my entire navy.

Also the Korath fleet begins to leave Begle. This is good but they are heading directly east. There is only one system there, my capitol.

I decide that I will pray that the Dread Lords don’t attack and put all my forces towards Korath control. They have 9 battle ships to my 7. Also I slightly outgun them. However they have a total of 90 hit points while I only have a total of 47. Finally they have 3 fleets to my two. The final showdown will begin in operation Gettysburg…

Operation Gettysburg 1 Nov 2229-1 Apr 2230

The title shows what I am hoping for. The Korath are attacking right when my flagship was destroyed by a Dread Lord. I am mounting my last ditch defense, but the odds are against me. The one bright side is that the Korath have withdrawn from Begle I (my other ship producing planet) to conquer my home world. This means that I can build up there instead.

However the most unusual thing just happened. The Korath fleets aren’t attacking me. They just stopped advancing and now we are at a standoff for us 2 weeks apart and for them 8. This must be the 20% of their brains that the computer took away when I made the difficulty “normal”. And now I am in a more favorable position than I was a minute ago. My economy is under control and I am making 1 Orbital per week on my capitol. My population is increasing on a steadily growing curve and it won’t be long before I can make an Orbital per week on both Begle I and Wardell II.

Finally I have put together a sizable force. I will use the 3rd and 4th Fighter Squadrons to spearhead the assault on the Korath ships near Begle I.

Polls still show the Korath with a military rating of 45 compared to my 18, however there is also a steady increase in my military might while the Korath are staying relatively stagnant.

I order the attack. My problem is that I run out of movement when the Korath are close enough to get the first strike advantage. They also have more hit points than me, but I have more guns. The Korath attack, and suddenly I am surrounded, smart. They were waiting with a reserve force out of sensor range on their flank and it swung around and attacked me. Luckily it only enveloped the 3rd Fighter Squadron and the 4th was saved. The battle is fierce.

It gets down to 1v1. The Korath have more hit points and I have more weapons. Will my Orbital be enough?

Yes, it destroys the Korath Heavy Fighter with 2 hit points to spare.

Now I am left with a tough decision. I could pull back the last orbital in the 3rd Fighter Squadron and call off the whole operation, of I could engage the 4th fighter Squadron with the flanking fleet.

I decide to do the latter and then run for it. With a Korath reinforcement fleet approaching from the north I can’t take back Begle I this time. However I can still give the Korath a bloody nose. I order the attack.

It is a crushing victory on my part. I only lost 1 fighter. I still decide to retreat and build up to fight another day.

My attack was a failure in that it failed to retake Begle, but it was a success in that I greatly weakened the Korath defenses. I would say that now I am in a position to win this war, Dread Lord permitting of course. The Korath attempted to pursue me, but my ships are just too fast. They might now attempt to attack my home world, but assuming they don’t have any more hidden fleets, and that they attack from the direction they are aiming for the defense should be easy.

“Speak of hidden fleets and hidden fleets appear.” The Korath attack my rear with another fleet identical to the ones I’ve seen before. The circle indicates the presumed location of another fleet. If I get the jump on them then I might win. We have an equal number of fleets. Let’s just hope that no more appear. My other fleet consisting of a defender, a Retribution Class Starship and an original 1 attack orbital will be a reserve for the 2nd and 3rd Fighter Squadrons and then go into orbit of the capital.

However yet again for some reason the Korath stop and don’t attack. My guess is that they are setting another little “clever trap” for me. But I won’t let them use the same old trick on me. I will wait until I get a fully functional 5th Fighter Squadron and then I will go way around their flank and attack their trap from behind. Also Begle I is now producing Orbitals at a rate of 1 per turn. This is a slight decrease in cash, but I now have enough stocked up and my population is growing enough that it won’t matter much. In other good news my population has just passed theirs and so has my economy. Their military is still very strong, but mine continues to grow.

As the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Fighter Squadrons advance the Korath pull back one of their fleets to attack Begle I that is now producing ships.

Suddenly a Korath relief fleet accidentally runs into an unintentional trap of my own. They are surrounded and I order the attack.

It is a major victory for the Terran Alliance. However I disengage the 5th squadron who took the casualties.

Now I am down to two squadrons of four ships each to attack the retreating Korath ships while a third squadron waits over Begle I to ambush them.

But as my ships close in a lone ship appears to reinforce the two Korath fleets. It has an attack rating of 4! Luckily when I look closer it is still using first generation weapons that the Korath has crammed on to it. That is good, but if the Korath can makes ships that powerful, then a fleet of three of them could defeat 3 Squadrons of Orbitals.

Before that ship can arrive I order the attack with the 6th Squadron that was built on Begle I.

A Korath ship begins to go down.

Finally I win, but it takes a heavy price and I retreat the last ship in the 6th Squadron to orbit of Begle I.

But the Korath have other plans. They attack Begle I and destroy the last ship in the 6th Fighter Squadron. Whenever I lose a squadron completely I never rename another one the same way. So far I have only lost the 1st and 6th ones. Incidentally the only two built on Begle I.

This is the current situation in the Northern Theater. Assuming the 4 attack ship doesn’t give me any trouble I should have complete victory in Operation Gettysburg in one week.

I’ll have the 3rd Fighter Squadron (lower) attack the fleet while the 4th Fighter Squadron will attack the super ship.

I order the 3rd into battle. The Korath ships fire deadly cannons at the Orbitals.

But eventually it is a major Terran victory.

Also the 4th Fighter Squadron attacks the super-ship.

My fleet demolishes it and only takes one hit point worth of damage. After a year of war and many ships lost on both sides I am finally back where I started. Except this time money is on my side. I owe my success to the Orbital star fighter that I could produce in numbers and my economy could afford. Now that the Operation Gettysburg is called to a close I prepare for the attack on Tykosky III in Operation Little Round Top…

Operation Little Round Top 1 Apr-22 Jun 2230

My plan is to re-conquer the Korath world of Tykosky III which is their jumping off point into Begle I. This operation will be given #1 priority. If it succeeds then I will cut around and invade the Korath system Apollo. This, like every other operation is dependent of the Dread Lords not attacking. Right now in the war I have the advantage, but the Korath still have a much more powerful military. I am worried because those ships aren’t in orbit of their planets and so their space must be full of them.

Oh no…

I have to attack. I order the 2nd Squadron to attack.

The Korath ships are incredible. It makes me wonder if they made tech deals with the Dread Lords. I lose my entire squadron right there.

One of their ships is damaged. I order another attack with the 4th squadron. This battle will probably later be called The Second Somme.

I take out two of their ships but the result is the same.

There is one ship left. If it gets on to the planet then I am doomed. I will attack it with my last squadron. The 3rd squadron finally attacks. The Korath ship takes a bad hit.

Finally the last Korath ship is down.

I just hope there are no more of those fleets. I have the 3rd Squadron attack the Korath ship in orbit.

I lose one fighter but the battle is won.

I check the military stats and find that I have a military rating of 21 compared to their 30. The Second Somme was very costly to both sides and it seems that they only have one or two big offensives left in them. Also my ship production is much faster than theirs is so they are mainly relying on older models that they built ages ago.

Or not.

The second Somme was too costly to fight another battle like that. Also my transport is ready. So I will use my superior speed to send the 7th squadron out as a decoy while my transport nears Kyoski III. As the 7th squadron approaches I see a sight that will haunt me for years to come. There are two of the killer fleets. These fleets keep popping up. To counter them I will design a new ship.

The Korath don’t go for the bait. They continue towards the 3rd squadron, but my transport has arrived.

The TAS Hope uses gas warfare to attack the Korath.

The invasion fails, but I do some damage. With two killer fleets approaching I decide to re-write the rule book and start to use my speed to my advantage. They seem to decide that the 3rd Fighter Squadron is more of a threat and pursue it instead of defending their planet. My new fast transport speeds towards the planet.

In 1 week I arrive and I decide to use gas warfare. There are still 2.7 billion Korath on that planet. Will my billion troops be enough?

The answer: no

I picked the worst time for invading and lost. There are only 1 billion Korath left on the planet. If I can keep it clear for just two more weeks them I will conquer it. The Korath take my bait and pursue the 3rd Fighter Squadron. My economy is going under because of continued Transport production and invasions. Also the Korath have put out 6 spies to bog down my industry.

I begin my 3rd invasion of Kyoski III. There are 1.6 billion Korath on the planet. I will go into debt with gas warfare.

Luckily I win and gain the Ion Cannons III technology.

Now that I have conquered Kyoski III I have complete control of all of my systems. The Korath now have a military rating of 42 compared to my 24. They are probably building up for their counter attack of Tykoski III just like when they attacked Begle I back in Operation Deep Space 9. Now I will build up for the Korath counter-attack and the eventual assault on Apollo in Operation Run Like Hell…

No there isn't.  one worrd of advice is that is it's not a story then put in pictures.

Next installment's coming

Rather than add reinforced HP modules on a cargo ship it would be more cost effective to research and build combat ships with larger hulls.  I usually skip tiny and small hulls, with my first combat ships having medium hulls.

Strategic Analysis

By the time of the actual attack I will have 3-4 squadrons in the Kyoski system.  I will be facing 2+ fleets of 9 attack or more. To counter this in the past I have simply retreated and led them on a wild good chase while my other ships attack the stationary strong point.  However they don’t have planetary invasion and so I’m not very worried about them invading.  One advantage I will have is that I can go into orbit on one side of the planet and leave orbit on the other side.  This will increase my speed even more.  I just need to stay 3 spaces away from the Korath warships, so that I won’t be attacked.  Also I have my new warship that has 4 attack in Mass Drivers.  They have a military mining Starbase near me, but it is well defended and it wouldn’t be wise to attack it.  Like all other operations it is dependent on the Dread Lords not fighting.  I will wait until I have some Slugger fleets out with 12 total attack and then I will launch my strike.  The problem is that time it still at least 6 weeks away.  My strategy will be to hold Tykoski III and wait for the Sluggers to arrive.

Sorry about being absent for uhh... a few weeks meby?

Operation Run Like Hell Jun 22 2230-1 Feb 2231

This operation is basically to hold Tykoski III during the Korath counter attack.  For this I have designed a new ship that uses both Human and Korath technology.  The Slugger Class Starship is what will turn the tide of the war.

The two Korath fleets continue to pursue the 3rd Fighter Squadron.  I hope to attack them next week with Fleet Hope which is made up of 3 Slugger Class Starships.

But I forget to move the 3rd Fighter Squadron and it is destroyed in a crushing defeat.

Oh well.

But Fleet Hope is ready to attack.

The Korath, however, have a different plan.

Fleet hope isn’t enough to take on four different Korath fleets.  Luckily these new Korath ships are slow, so My Orbiter Squadrons can outrun them.  I will have Fleet Hope engage the two Korath fleets that chased the 3rd Fighter Squadron.  I accidentally stop right next to them, so they will have the first strike advantage.  I hope my fleet will be enough.  But yet again the 20% of the Korath’s brain cut out by the computer is the crucial part.  The Korath fleets bypass Fleet Hope and head for the Orbital Squadrons.  This means that I will have first strike ability.  I order the attack.

I win in a major victory.  I would have liked it if I hadn’t lost a single ship but for the circumstances this was great.  I will fold a new slugger into Fleet Hope to make up for the loss.

I pull back all my Orbitals around Tykosky III so that Fleet Hope can deal with them.

The battle is a total failure.  I lose Fleet Hope and the Korath only lose one ship.

I temporarily disband the 5th fleet and combine it with another Slugger in the area.  I attack yet again.

I lose the slugger, but destroy the enemy fleet.

Now there are just two Korath fleets left.  One is headed for the planet.  I prepare to have the 5th and 8th   Fighter Squadrons attack it.

However suddenly they both start to chase the 7th Fighter Squadron around.  I still have my superior speed and the Korath aren’t good at boxing me in.  This chase will give me time to reform fleet hope using the new Slugger class Starships built last week.

I order Fleet Hope to attack their fleets.

It is a major victory on my behalf.

However there is still one Korath fleet in the area and Fleet Hope is damaged.  I order the 7th squadron to attack to soften up the Korath before I attack.  The ships weave in and out of each other while firing deadly bolts of ions.

I don’t believe it.  The 7th squadron defeats them at the loss of 3 out of 4 ships.  This may sound bad, but those ships are extremely powerful and they have taken out as many as nine of my ships with only one or two casualties, like at the Second Somme.

I will send the remainder of Fleet Hope to go look for a Military Starbase that we think was helping the Korath in the area.  Also today was a day that I have long been waiting for.  Both me and the Korath have 24 as our military strength.

I attack Korath mining again.  I also design a Starship that will take out the Korath Military Mining Starbase.

Once I have one or two of them then I will attack their Starbase and end Operation Run Like Hell.

Finally my first two heavy battleships are ready and Battle Squadron 1 (one Heavy Battleship and two Orbitals) is ready to go on the offensive.  I will start by attacking the Military Mining Starbase with which they are using to project themselves into my territory.  Then I will use my other Heavy Battleship to spearhead the attack on Apollo I.

I order the attack on the Starbase.

I love watching the Heavy Battleship own the Starbase.  It reminds me of the Battle of Coruscant on Star Wars Episode III.

Finally I win the battle, but the Heavy Battleship has to be withdrawn for repairs.

Finally I am in complete control of the area around Kyoski.  Now that I have built up my ships I will now invade the Apollo system in Operation Red-Ball express…

Why don't you outfit your combat ships with defenses?  Defenses are cheaper to research than weapons and require less space.  Of the three weapon types: beams, missiles, and guns, guns are the cheapest to defend against.  Time to research armor!
