It Should Not Be This Difficult

It should not be this difficult when trying to enjoy a game online.  We all paid for this game, however in order to play/host it you have to make intricate configuration changes.  To the everyday geek this is no big deal, however the 80% out there are somewhat technically challenged it is a big deal.  It's money wasted down the toilet.  One should not have to go into this or that to make adjustments that already should of been made during the developement of Sins.  On top of the hosting issue you have the "Mini-dump" issue that happens quite frequently.  It's gotten to the point where I'm about to hang up my Illuminators and say the hell with it.  Point blank, hosting needs to be made to were all can host.  I understand firewalls, proxies and other hurdles, however when one turns off their firewall and it still doesn't let you host something is up. Mini-dumps, the fact that this cannot be replicated in-house on developments side blows me away.  You have hundreds complaining about it.  Guys get on the ball or you going to start loosing a lot of customers, starting with me.

Why is it that people think posting the SAME thing twice will net them a more agreeable answer?

itsmevic, you posted the same complaint almost a month ago here , got an answer and instead of replying there you start another thread with the same sort of complaint.

Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of time to play it lately between work, wife, kids and helping out on various forums (not necessarily in that order... :p )

1) I can regularly host a game with no mini-dump. I get mine more when someone else hosts...

2) You say you understand firewalls, proxies etc... but turning your firewall off doesn't allow you to host - sound to me like you DON'T fully understand. For starters you haven't said anything about doing the Port Forwarding part of the process. See it works like this - unblocking the ports on a firewall allows the traffic on that port to pass through the firewall. It doesn't tell the router WHERE to send the traffic. I suggest you read The Monk's guide and try again - it took me 5 minutes to do it just looking at the FAQ page - you have a full blown guide to help you if you want!!!

Hack78,

Believe me, itsmevic has my guide.....he even registered on our clan forums. Check his post history....two identical posts, almost a month apart. I smell troll...

As far as playing a game with me?  ;) I'll be playing a few over this coming weekend (these will be my first 1.05 games.....so go easy on me if you see me...hehe)

don't be an ass, jesus christ I'm posting a simple thing here and you've turned it into a friggin federal case. grow tha hell up.

lol. i suggest you get off of monks knob, really. You explain monks instructions to someone non-technical and then come back and tell me how successful they were. all i'm saying in my original post is that it shouldn't be this difficult host a damn game, that's all nothing more. One shouldn't have to go in do this and do that, make changes here and there just to host a game.

again don't be an ass dude. my post was simple, really it was. in the time it took you to think out your witty half-baked response to my initial post you could of microwaved yourself a hotpocket and be enjoying it now. Time much better spent. Peace.

Why is it forum moderators think there above god and everyone else. so what! if I posted something twice, i'll post it again, three, four times if it gets my question answered. set your arrogance to the side momentarily and offer a wee bit of help instead of all the flack.

1. I'm not a forum "anything". I don't work for Stardock or IronClad, I'm a volunteer

2. As I posted in my initial reply (reply #2) your question was ANSWERED the first time around. Obviously that answer wasn't good enough for you...

3. "offer a wee bit of help" ?... don't really know what to say to that!

See now that response was a "wee-bit" better wouldn't ya say? You sounded half-way respectful in that response. That's all it takes bro and it's returned to you 10 times fold.

itsmevic,

I haven't seen anybody half as nice and patient as Monk on the internet at all. I've already seen well more than a dozen posts that were answered in detail. Often the same thing over and over again.

Thing is, this should never have been posted again when there was a ready answer for you, and it's framed as a non-constructive criticism.

One shouldn't have to go in do this and do that, make changes here and there just to host a game.

I suggest taking it up the the DoD - they created the Internet (around when the Cuban Missile Crisis occured). If you can't find anyone there, try Al Gore - he "commercialised" it.
It's obviously their fault and not yours since they invented/promoted the technology you wish to use, but fail to understand!!! Do you blame the car maker if your car won't start because you don't know how to maintain it, fuel it etc...????

I've said it before, you cannot complain about owning a computer and not be able to operate it. Sometimes you have to tweak it to make it work (Add a new radio to your car and you may have to modify the dashboard to make it fit...same thing here). Go back to the old days of DOS gaming and you had to create a floppy disk that modified your config.sys and autoexec.bat files to give the game enough memory just to play.

Today is the same thing albeit 100 times easier. Try plugging your machine directly to the modem without a router. If you have problems it's your computer/firewall settings. If you don't it's router issues. That should at least narrow your problem down.

Now this guy understands. His response was professional, he did not patronize or try to hard to be witty in order to make his post seem intelligent. It was a heart felt response. Duely noted my friend and thank you for your suggestion.

Your are getting attitude from myself and others as you gave it out first, you have shown no intention to take steps to fix anything by yourself etc...
Did you ever think to ask The Monk directly for help instead of whining on the forums and complaining about being referred to a guide that alot of people have read and been able to follow???

(And I don't need to be witty to make myself SEEM intelligent. I know I am... The witty stuff is just especially for you :) Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy???)

@itsmevic

Really?

here once again is my initial reply to the first thread you made with your complaint. (a reply which by the way you never bothered to acknowledge at all..)

@ itsmevic

What is the point of forum posts (and stickies) by the developers and forum volunteers if no one cares to read them, and instead create yet another post/thread complaining about things already gone over and covered quite nicely???

1. IronClad Online is a matchmaking service, nothing is hosted by ICO. SINS is P2P. The HOST in SINS is a "host" in name only. All players in a SINS MP game run the entire simulation on their own PC, the "host" only SYNCS all of the player's games together.

2. Because of point number one (nothing being hosted by IronClad Online) people (wanting to "host") need to forward all relevant game traffic past routers/firewalls to their pc's. For those with only one NAT device (router) it can be as simple as forwarding the relevant traffic past said router and on to their computer system. Others have multiple NAT devices (a router and a cabled/dsl modem that has been configured to act as a router as well) and those setups can require a tad more attention.

My guide "Networking and SINS" (the relevant guide is the one that I wrote Feb 14th 2008 please check the file date to make sure you're using the correct one) covers all that is necessary in order to configure one's network correctly to host sins. The instructions have worked for many people so far and there is no reason they can't continue to work.

There are two exceptions to this rule:

1. People who are at university dorms etc. where they can't force a network admin to forward the relevant game-traffic to only THEIR pc.

2. People who can't be bothered to download, read and implement the instructions I've provided.

In either case, it has been pointed out MANY, MANY times now on these forums and in ICO chat, that game version 1.1 will introduce an optional NAT-T (Nat traversal) type "tunneling" netcode for SINS which (although like anything that "tunnels" past routers and firewalls is LESS secure than before) will enable both those who can't and those who won't follow the instructions in my guide to be able to host SINS games.

thanks and have a nice day!

the Monk

1. What exactly was patronizing in that detailed ANSWER?

2. What was un-professional about my factual responses?

3. How much more of my time would you have me give to this community before you deem it "heartfelt effort"?

You have some sort of bone to pick with me for some reason that I can't understand...

I saw you in ICO June 16th/08 and pointed you to our clan forums to download my guide for SINS networking. You downloaded my guide on June 16th/08 and also registered on our clan forums at the same time.

On our clan forums site you're still the newest registered user. Click on your name (June 16th 2008) You downloaded my guide and registered on our forums, one day before you posted your first complaint thread which I answered with exactly what I quoted above.....to which you never responded.

You've had my guide for a month now itsmevic. How many people have you helped put those instructions to use?

Maybe you should look in the mirror before pointing fingers...

If people were able to follow it, more would be hosting. I see everyday in the Lobby, "Can you host a game, I can't?" "Will you host a game" and so on... Keep telling yourself your intelligent, you seem extremely bright.
