CD Projekt Announces No-DRM Classic Games Store

CD Projekt, known most recently for The Witcher, has announced the coming launch of a new DRM-free classic games store named Good Old Games. They plan to have a variety of goodies such as Fallout, Freespace, and Jagged Alliance available at their opening in September, and are planning to update them all for compatibility with current hardware and XP/Vista.

I think this is great news for gamers. Like a certain other online store (wink wink), there won't be any obnoxious DRM, and customers will be able to download as often as they need. If things go well for GOG, the days of nasty DRM and limited downloads may well be numbered. Between new games on Impulse and old games on GOG, we may well soon see a day where nearly any PC game you want to play is available at your fingertips--legally and with no strings attached!

That actually sounds really cool..

However, it's a little strange that they would sell Freespace, considering the game is open source now and you can basically download it legally and for free. I imagine a good portion of the people who'd be using the service would know, but they should!

And they've wisely put Fallout 2 as the first box on the image

No kidding.. it'll hopefully let me pick up all the games I used to have and can't find the discs too. Baldur's Gate (the original, I still have the discs for BG2 ) is up there as well.

These should be CHEAP. Like, Virtual Console kind of cheap at worst. Let's not forget they probably just paid a few people a few bucks for the rights to redistribute these with no other real cost... If they even paid anyone for some of these unsuported products from defunct companies and not just made some settlement in court to have the right to publish them or something. And they really shouldn't offer now free games on there, it's misleading for people who aren't in the know.

Pretty reasonable in my opinion, too. Some of the boxes on the pic aren't ancient enough to be worth scrap - I'd pay $10 for Fallout Tactics (another victim of lost discs )

Well... sure, the engine is open, but the content isn't. Yeah, yeah, I know about the EULA, but that was changed (that is, even on the original CD, that EULA wasn't copied to the machine -- the one without the "friends" clause was), unfortunately. *Technically*, those FSOInstallers and whatnot aren't on the up and up. No one cares at this point, but they might start caring if this picks up.

Then again, gametap has been offering it for awhile now and they still haven't caught any crap over it, so maybe not.

I'm particular impressed by the fact that they claim all titles will be Vista compatible. No small feat, given the age of some of the games.

Ehh, most games work on Vista with little trouble. I have yet to find one I could not run, even in 64-bit.

My roomates and I, all run 64-bit Vista (Home Premium through Ultimate), and have had times where we have gone back and played Dungeon Siege, Diablo, Diablo 2, and other various old titles.

For the most part, if it was programed well to begin with, Vista can run it. If it was programed poorly than it will have trouble.

Note, some games (Dungeon Siege), claim they have known compatibility issues, played through nearly the entire game and no sign of them. Did notice some strange graphical errors that happened pretty rarely. ie, a character would be dead, but wouldn't change from his alive animation.

I just signed up for their beta. Anyone know any other games they will have? Wing Commander FTW!!! I tried the dosbox thing and I got to one of the missions and everything runs just a little fast so it was impossible to complete the mission.

DOSBox allows you to speed up or slow down the emulation speed--check the documentation.

Lets hope this takes off and the catalog grows and grows!  Although with some of the software companies out there we may never see some really good classics.

Man, I have surely and thoroughly left the gaming mainstream. Nothing on that splash page looked familiar to me, but I'd definitely think about GOG if they offer a perpetual license for titles like SimEarth or Master of Magic.

Almost had a breakdown in my pants. Hope they have lots of good games.

@Kippling: GameTap has BG2 if you're in the US.

I'm fine with them selling "free" games if they do good tech support for 'em.

No kidding. I've never been able to play it because I'd only heard how great it was in the past couple years when it's been going for astronomical amounts on the various auction sites.

Strange too, considering I have all my original BG, and BG2 discs and knew about Icewind Dale, etc. I guess when Torment was new, it just didn't generate much buzz in my neck of the woods.

Plus, I'll be really happy to buy Fallout 1 and 2 as while I own Tactics, it was a little disappointing in some respects and I never owned either of the originals. Just played them for a few hours tops at a friend's house.

This is wonderful news. Cheap, great games.

Planescape was the best game made by Black Isle. It was strange, silly, but I loved the idea.

It was definitely strange.. and I guess the flying skull was the silly comic relief

But yeah, it was a fantastic game. No other game really has explored the strange part of D&D lore as much as it did. Plus you had a kick-ass Githzerai as a sidekick!

Looking at the top of their page, I already OWN most of those games. Was just thinking of installed "Sacrifice" again yesterday.

Curious about the legality of this. Codemasters don't strike me as the type to let DRM free copies of their games sell. (This is, after all, one of the last remaining companies to use Starforce.)

Well, when I downloaded it, I didn't get any cinematics, and the sounds we're gone, but this was a Freespace 2 download, so...

I also hoping, (Immensially, Sp?) For a couple more titles coming out...
-Mechwarrior 2
-Warcraft 2
-Sonic the Hedgehog CD (Just for Nostalgia...)

Warcraft2 is still sold in shops (at least here) in Bundle with Diablo and Starcraft+Broodwar so if you really want it you have to leave your room
