Sony Vaio VGN-FS690

Will it work

We have a Sony Vaio with an nVidia GeForce Go 6200 video card.  We are running WindowsXP Home service pack 2.  The computer (laptop) is 4 years old.  I was wondering if the game is compatible.  My son is dying to buy it, but we don't want to be in a situation where we can't return it if it doesn't work.

I checked in on the IRC chat this morning and the moderator suggested I post here.

Thanks for any help.

The game will probably work, but we'll need to know a few more of your PC specs. Do me a favor and answer the following questions (please, get the answer from the DirectX Diagnostic Tool which can be accessed by: Start->Run then type dxdiag):

(from the "System" tab)
OPERATING SYSTEM:
PROCESSOR:
MEMORY:
DirectX VERSION:

(from the "Display" tab)
VIDEO CARD CHIP TYPE:
VIDEO CARD MEMORY:
VIDEO CARD DRIVER DATE:

Once we know all of this info, we should be able to tell if the game will run or not by comparing it to the game's minimum requirements.

Thanks,
~Charles

Here's the game's minimum requirements:

System Requirements:

  • Windows XP/Vista
  • 1 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB Free System RAM
  • 64 MB DirectX 9.0c 3D Video Card
  • 1 GB Hard Drive Space
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • Internet connection required for multiplayer and updates.

Your Operating System, processor speed, DirectX version, video card and video card memory all look good.  So if you have enough free hard drive space and an internet connection for the computer you'll be playing on then things should be good.

MEMORY:510MB RAM

You are just under the 512 MB RAM (system memory) requirement, but close enough that you'll still be able to play.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to get some more memory though if your system has room and you got the extra cash for it.

VIDEO CARD DRIVER DATE:4/3/2005

The drivers for your video card are dated, but that is something than you can update for free online when the time comes.

Let me know if you need any other info to help your buying decision.

On the video card. This is the most recent update that Sony provides. We had an issue with the Lego Indiana Jones game and it was suggested that we upgrade the driver by the LucasGames people. It still blue screened. Do you still think that they are ok? 14 year olds disappointment it hard to bear!

Thanks...

Unfortunately, there's no way that I know of for me to tell if your video drivers from 2005 will run the game flawlessly or not.  You might be able to find an update for the drivers at www.OmegaDrivers.net though.

Like I said, your video card is good enough, and it has enough video memory.  You also seem to meet all of the other requirements (processor speed, OS, DirectX version, etc..).  You could use some more system memory since you're at the bare minium of 512MB (well you actually have 510MB), so I'd suggest getting some more.  Other than that though, in my opinion there doesn't seem to be any reason why the game shouldn't work on that system.
