Call of Duty 5 in Development

Confirmed Trailer on IGN.com

Yep, thats right folks! One of the best FPS franchises is coming out with their fifth installment. This one looks like it will explore the dramatic Pacific Front of World War II, something no game in the series, including expansion packs, has done. Needless to say, this game looks good, judging by the trailer, and on the premise alone. Hopefully, we can expect another console favorite from our friends at Activision.

Yeah. Call of Duty 5 is in development by Treyarch (not Infinity Ward) and is taking the series back to World War II after Call of Duty 4: Modern War. Activision is really on a roll with their whole "we're going to exploit our franchises as much as possible" mindset.

There were rumors floating around a while back relating to Infinity Ward purchasing the rights for major Call of Duty iterations back from Activision so that Call of Duty X would always be an Infinity Ward title and any off-shoots would be unrelated to their superb work.

Anyway, the fact that it's set in the Pacific Theater makes the move back to World War II less moronic, but it's still a head-scratcher. At first I thought it was going to be set in the Vietnam War and that would have been amazing.

It's called "Call of Duty: World At War" and as mittens said, being developed by Treyarch.

It's unclear if COD5 will be Infinity Ward's, if they'll call their next one COD6 or if both teams are dropping the old numbers.

The one high point is that Treyarch will be using the engine from COD4 for World At War and will apparently include all the ranking and unlock stuff for the multiplayer portion. So there's some hope, I guess. :)

I have to say i'm a little less enthusiastic about the new title in development given Treyarch's lack of iniative in the other titles they've done. Certainly CoD: 3 was largley dissapointing, maybe i'm not giving them much of a chance in light of Infitnity Wards recent success with CoD: 4, but meh, its the internet, i'm allowed to be skeptical :D.

On the note of returning to WWII in the Pacific, I think its a good move on their part. Only two other major games have been there, MOH: PA (GOOD) and MOH: RS (FAIL). So now that the big man on the block CoD is going after that storyline, maybe we'll get some new experiences.
