As a secularist, i can see where he comes from, what someone believes in politically should not be influenced by their religious beliefs or those whom preach religion to them.
But religion is politics.
I am not a "secularist" and I am certainly convinced that my religious beliefs influence my political opinion. They should. I am not studying ancient texts to make up my mind on ethics and then ignore it once there is a practical application for it named "politics".
Obama either admired that racist preacher or he doesn't. If he admired him, we should expect Obama to base his political opinion on the ethics he learned from his "spiritual mentor". If he didn't admire him, I don't understand why he would call him his spiritual mentor and listen to the sermons for 20 years.
For me a racist like Obama (and that's he is if he learned his ethics from his "spiritual mentor") is not good enough as president of the USA.
I think thats a huge problem with humanity, when you say 'advantage in a black president', do you mean any symbolic advantage?
If his skin colour is supposed to be relevant, it better be a good advantage. Otherwise I don't see the point.
As thats the only advantage that you can really gain from having someone of a particular skin pigment colour.
Saudi Arabia demands things like no Jewish ambassadors sent to Saudi Arabia. If they had the same attitude towards blacks, confronting them with a black president would be an excellent way to improve the world by confronting racists with their fears.
We shouldn't be looking at them as 'A woman candidate', 'Black Candidate' or 'Jewish Candidate'. We should be looking at what their policies are, what they believe in politically and how they present these ideas to us.
Well, Obama is a racist; Clinton is an experienced left-wing political; and McCain is an experienced politican and a war hero.
I already looked at their policies and ideals.
But Obama fans think a black president would be a good idea. Clinton fans think a woman president would be a good idea.
I agree with with the Clinton fans. In today's world, a woman president would be a good choice. A Jewish president would be a good choice too. Perhaps confronting the UN with a Jewish woman president would finally get things done.
It's as important as the first women in leading positions in offices were to change the world. People have to get used to it. And those who won't will have to deal with their fears and the fact that the world has moved on without them.
But one more incompetent world leader won't help, not even if he has the same skin colour as so many of them.
There are people who would vote for Obama because he is black. And there are people who would vote against Obama because he is black. Both are wrong because his skin colour is not important and "black" won't be an advantage for the president of the USA or the world.
Being black won't make Obama a better president, but it might win him the election.
And if it does, the USA have a problem.
