Pardon me if my reaction is less than excitement. Yeah, I've played Diablo 1 and II, they were so-so at best. I particularly remember playing Diablo I, which I bought because it was marketed and reviewed as an RPG, and thinking how in the world anyone could describe this soulless action game as an RPG? While there are certainly other factors (cough, consoles, cough), Diablo is probably as large a factor as any other in destroying real RPGs and turning most of them them into Diablo-like action, loot whoring clones (Dungeon Siege, Titan Quest, etc.). Yeah there are a few reasonable RPGs out there, one or two a year if we are very lucky--NWN (though it personally leaves me rather cold), The Witcher (very good, though too linear and action oriented), Gothic (well, its heart is in the right place, though it is unplayable for myriad reasons). I don't include Oblivion (somewhat enjoyable game and somewhat MMO-like in athmosphere, though nonetheless a betrayal of a solid, RPG series--it's a console oriented action game with faux RPG trappings and an amazingly non-compelling storyline--expect Fallout 3 to be a similar betrayal of Fallout) or Mass Effect (like the KOTOR games, features a good plot and excellent storytelling, unlike Oblivion, but gameplay is far too console action oriented, areas are far too linear and limited, quests are simple and boring). RIP Ultima, Wizardry, Might and Magic, Bard's Tale, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Elder Scrolls (pre-Oblivion).
