DreamScreenSaver

Your active dream as your screen saver

http://vistadreams.org/DreamManager/DreamScreenSaver.zip
Here is a little something I wrote this week.

If you wished you could have a dream as your screen saver, then DreamScreenSaver is your answer!  It takes you currently active dream and makes it your screen saver!

Download it FREE here.

The one limitation is that you can't using Vista's native "On resume, display logon screen". You have to disable it and re-enable it in the DreamScreenSaver configuration window.

Cheers!

Sounds great! However, what about the ability to turn a .Dream into a screensaver without having it as your desktop background? (i mean using a .dreram file as a screensaver instead of a desktop background)

Can't be done while the dream format remains closed.

Is there any plugin, program or way to resize and preview a Dream so you can look at an animating version of it before making it the new default?
No, you can only see the thumbnail. There is no preview for dreams like screen savers have.

I don't suppose there is any way of randomly changing through dreams over time for the regular desktop background, is there? If so, would it cause the screensaver version to change?

Hey TheMasterBaron,

Awesome idea. I'm using Windows Vista 64bit, and the screensaver is not showing up in the screensaver selection screen. When I rightclick install it shows for that screen only, as soon as I press Ok it disappears and won't showup :(

Do you have any idea how to get this screensaver working with Windows Vista 64bit?

I'm running 64bit and don't see the same problem your having. Right-clicking and using the install works just fine and stays selected as the screensaver. Try and copy the DreamScreenSaver.scr file to your c:\Windows folder and it should shows up in the drop-down list.

Nice, somehow it won't show up when you copy it to system32, where all the other screensavers are. Didn't try to copy it to the windows folder yet. Thanks!

Just one other question. When I click preview it shows the dream I'm currently running. If I let it sleep into the screensaver it gives a black screen. After a reboot it shows, thou it's not moving anymore. Any way to get that fixed? :)

Also keep up the great work on your dream, they are the best of all

It seem to load an image of the currently selected dream when the screensaver goes active. It won't show the animated version. When I select another dream file, it will still show the first one.

Any idea?

OK, looks like when I did my testing I have the deskscapes internal player enabled. When I disable it I get the same issue. The preview works great. I'll have to look into it. In the meantime, it looks to only work with DeskScapes 2 with the internal player enabled.

OK, I think I got it worked out! Re-download to get the latest version and give it a try!

Okay, 1 last thing :P

When Windows is locked and the screensaver goes active, it only shows a black screen. Is that somehow fixable so you can see the dreamscene ?
Nope, when the PC is locked the screen saver doesn't have access to the desktop anymore. ;p

Hi Guys,
Hello MasterBaron,

You are truly an Artist. Your Dreams are fantastic.
The Screensaver works great. I love the way the windows fade out into the Screensaver, very cool.
I was wondering if it was possible to disable the Maximized Window Pause so that when the screensaver becomes active the image is still animated. Whenever the screensaver takes over a maximized window the screensaver doesn't move.
It would also be nice, if maybe the Desktop Icons would fade into the Screensaver as well.

These are merely suggestions. I love what you do to our computer screens.
I usually don't use maximized windows and I rarely have icons on my Desktop.

Thanks again, and please continue to do what you do.

Those are good suggestions, but the trick of the screen saver is to simply show the desktop window on top. So if the desktop is paused, then it will show a paused desktop and there isn't much I can do. Also, the desktop icons are hidden in the same way as right clicking on the desktop and unchecking "Show Desktop Icons", so there is no way to fade them out. :(

Maybe as APIs on DreamScene and Deskscapes are made public, I will be able to do more.

Cheers,
Master Baron

Thanks Master Baron for your reply. I can't express how cool it is when the windows fade into the screensaver. I must be such a geek. I was at work with my laptop and the response that it got from some of my co-workers was great.
But I still have to ask: Is there any way, with maybe a registry tweak or something, that we can stop Deskscapes from pausing when the active window is maximized? I read that it pauses to save on the CPU since you can't see it anyway. Can we stop that?
I'm not trying to beat a dead horse or anything...I'm just wondering.
I discovered something adding a little transparency to my windows: When I have Firefox's window Maximized the Dreams are paused, but when I have Firefox on Fullscreen (F11), the dreams are playing. Interesting.
I does look cool when the fullscreen browser fades into my animated desktop.
It would be great if the Maximized windows did the same?

Thanks

The easiest thing to do is have the screen saver unmaximize any windows on startup, then remaximize them on exit. I'll give it a try tonight and see how well it works.

Problem solved! Go and re-download the screen saver to get the latest version which will "un-maximize" windows in order to re-active the desktop.

Thanks Master Baron,

I've been testing out the Screensaver like crazy and I've discovered a little issue with the latest build: When the Desktop is active, the screensaver doesn't work properly, no animation. I think it might have something to do with the Desktop Icons beacause when you disable the Desktop Icons from the desktop, the screensaver works fine. When a Window is active, it fades nicely into the screensaver and it works fine.
Do you think you can fix it?

Interesting and a nice find! I would never had thought to test the screen saver with no windows open (Or is it when you click on the desktop even when a window is open?) :)

I'll take a look tonight. You are right, there is something funny about hiding desktop icons that I've had to deal with before.

Thanks for the bug report ;)

I can't seem to duplicate this. Can you explain in more detail?

I've discovered that the issue occurs with the Dream Solar Flare. When I changed the Dream to Fire Storm I don't have the problem. Hmm, I love Solar Flare.

Everything works for me even with running Solar Flare. I'm running Ultimate 64bit with Deskscapes 2.0 so things could be a little different.

P.S. It runs better using DeskScapes 2.0 with the internal player turned on because it doesn't hiccup and restart the dream when the desktop icons are hidden.
