George Washington a Republican?

I love the game and really enjoy it but GW as a republican?  How did that one slip in?

haha. Your right, George Washington was not a Republican, he did not believe in party politics, in fact he believed it would only split the country up. Look how we listened to him...

The "classic" presidents had to be affiliated with *some* party.  Look at his politics and not so much as the party name and just roll with it.

Washington disavowed parties but was a closet Federalist. Jefferson and Hamilton competed for Washington's support; Hamilton won. The Federalist Party had a distrust of popular politics which proved its undoing, but it's not that unfair to trace a party lineage of Federalist to Whig to Republican, just as Jefferson's Republicans are the forerunners of the Democrats. Of course, the issues have shifted and in some cases reversed, but someone - I don't remember whom - said this. "If Jefferson and Hamilton were resurrected today, both would be astonished at the issues the nation is debating, but it wouldn't take either one long to recognize which Party he belonged to." As a Democrat myself, I wouldn't dispute the notion that George Washington would have been a Republican, although he would be dismayed by the extreme partisanship which prevails today.

The way the game is structured enforces a pretty rigid two-party system for games. For the campaign we had to keep in mind that both campaigns had to be relatively balanced and paced the same way and, second, that we definitely wanted to get some of the (much) older presidents in.

But, yeah, the real point is that we couldn't have George Washington assigned to the "I'm not a party kind of guy" party (which, semantically, is still kind of a party).

I had a much harder time with George Washington flying around in airplanes, taking out TV ads, appearing on talk shows, etc. than him being Republican. :D

Actually if you where to take a much better look at the issues facing our founding fathers, I think people would be more inclined to see Jefferson as a Republican and Washington as a Democrat and there is also no doubt in my mind the Lincoln would be a Democrat today.

Well Washington was something of a federalist so thus, hes for big government.  Democrat.  Jefferson was a ron paulish type of limited government guy.  So thus, a republican or even libertarian.  (even though when he was in charge, he ignored his opinions a little)
