Speeches giving opposite of expected results: bug?

I oppose issue X and the voters do too. Yet I lose points for a speech?

Everyone opposes higher gas prices.  I made that a platform.  I made a TV ad, a newspaper ad and a radio ad for it in texas.  Every time i give a speech about it, my rating drops further into the negative.  Shouldn't my rating improve?  it seems like a major bug to me.

If you give a speech or create an ad "against" a topic, then naturally your position would become a bigger negative number.

In this case, the topic is "High Gas Prices". So everytime you say you are against the topic, you'll get a bigger negative number - indicating that you are REALLY against it.

However, it does not seem to translate out to a better rating. Perhaps i'm doing something wrong.

What are you using to determine whether or not you're getting a "better rating" from campaigning against Higher Gas Prices?

As Charles (CrazyC0330) said, getting an even higher negative number on an issue where your support base (your party and independents) also has a negative number is a good thing. You want your opinion to be along the lines of the people who will be voting for you.

I have seen Texan voters flip-flop randomly on the High Gas Prices issue.

They all start out against it, but at some point, 2 out of 3 voter segments will be greatly in favor of it - either Democrat + Independent, or Republican + Independent - when this shift occurs, it usually occurs near the end of a campaign, and it also skyrockets the importance of the issue such that it's hard to get rid of, even if you have been pushing up other issues to avoid this anomaly.
