Update next week

Update next week

Minor but important

This weekend we're back on GalCiv so that we can get an update up hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

The main thing we're doing is fixing that annoying research behavior where after awhile, the research gets too expensive.  What's really ironic is that we added in the new algorithm in response to those who felt research was too cheap.  So we made research get correspondingly more expensive near the end of development.

Now, bear in mind, you can change the research rate but we're just not satisfied with the research pacing in the game so twilight will get a tweak to that next week.

Update: Based on feedback in this thread, we're going to expand a bit on what we were going to put into the update to deal with a few additional issues so it won't come out until next week but it'll be a much bigger update.

Carrier ships with fighter/bomber squads come to mindAmen! And ships carrying marines for boarding other ships.Bring back an improved version of the old planet invasion screen!Really, anything that Master of Orion II had, all those years ago, that GalCiv doesn't. That's what should be added. ^_^

What's missing is telepathic races that can capture planets and spaceships =P
Unfortunately, it would almost certainly unbalance the game unless they had significant weaknesses.
I've thought about how to implement that as a mod; it could be done if somehow the planet flipped to the player for just a turn or two and you would have to build a "Telepathic Central Command Station", which would have a very high upkeep of 5BC a week or higher, and it would just be a renamed Anti-Rebellion center.

I would really like "Stargate Starbases" too, where you would start with a Stargate that can transport only small or tiny ships and could be upgraded for larger ships. It has always annoyed me a bit that I have to convert my homeworld from a factory/military planet into a science/economic planet after I conquer a civilization or two because it ends up being too far away.

Even cooler than a stargate, would be a ship like the one from starcraft that allows you to warp a fleet around the map.

Both ideas would drastically change the need to have military planets on the front line and science/economics in the back.

I kind of like the Star Gate idea. Set them up as two way star bases. Something that you could research. A star base that could be destroyed?

Maybe even something where you could charge for usage?

Definitely something that had little or no defenses and needed to be defended. Just an idea.

This is probably going to have a comically simple solution, but I still don't see any update using Stardock Central. The current version is from May 1 and there's no updates.

You need to download the file and extract it according to the instructions :)

I am experiencing several random crash, + the infamous ALT+TAB crash under Vista... anybody else having problems?

I've e-mailed the SmartException logs to Stardock, is that enough or should I post in the bug forum?

1.92 alpha was in two threads and is a zip file containing the major changes. You have to manually download it, extract it and then copy it into your GC2 folder overwriting the old files. It's the way we did it when we were walking barefoot in the snow five miles to school trying to keep our 5 1/4 floppies from getting bent or wet...

The actual Stardock Central (and impulse I would assume) are coming soon from what I have gathered.

Luxury! You were lucky! We had to... well, enter entire games by checksummed hex from COMPUTE!s GAZETTE. Those were labours of love, I tell you.

Thanks. No idea how I've missed those other threads.

+ NEW: Removed a duplicate entry in the StarbaseModules.xml file.  Also added some starbase modules with "Mining" and "ProductionAssist" abilities to compensate the races that do not have the factory line of techs in their tech trees (Iconians, Thalans, Korath, Yor).  And I didn't just blindly add these, I made a spread sheet of all the starbase modules that each race has access to and filled in a few of the holes with new modules the best way I saw fit.  They are tied to race-specific techs, so no other races will inadvertently be affected.

Thanks alot.

However I missed the "mining" modules in the Iconian tech tree. I dont know if this is on purpose, but not being able to upgrade your mining resources is a big deal.

cheers

Even though I knew there was a patch coming, it's taken me 25 mins to find a link to it. I think there should be a news article on the News page and maybe a sticky entitled "Patch"?

Its an Alpha patch, not for general release as it does not contain everything that will be in the final release, and has yet to be fully tested. It was only put up as part of the final testing process for the full release. They'll yell from the rooftops when the full one is ready, as well as it showing up in Stardock Central.

Dev journals... post labeled 1.92 alpha by BoogieBac... visible from the first page of the forums right on top. Lordy, I'd hate to be stuck behind you at the drive thru ;p

Closest I got to that was the mainframe at HS that ran BASIC... I tried to play the Star Trek game, but alas I had to work, where as most of the real geeks were there until they got kicked out... I did fool with Hex for a VERY short time. Just enough to be completely over my head and know I needed something much simpler to do with my life...

Ah, Antracer, thanks for the sarcasm. Very helpful. I'm fairly new to the forums. There are a bewildering array of subsections. I skipped over "Gal Civ" since I was after "Gal Civ II", and was really expecting "TA" rather than "Twilight".

You'd have to concede that it could be *more* obvious where the patch is... even if it is an alpha.

Drive-thru? My, you know how to treat yourself...

LOL ! :D I'm on the road anywhere from 5-12 hours a day... Sometimes something hot becomes a necessity... and sometimes leaving at 3AM I just don't feel up to packing a lunch (breakfast... dinner...)

Please don't take me seriously... I sure don't. And you're right, I was a little steep. I always hit the "everything" forum button on the left side from the main page bookmark I have and it so happens the dev journals are right on top. Guess I just hit a lucky tee shot first time through. I DO know that you don't have to worry when a real patch comes in... the boards light up like Christmas. I apologize if I have been an offense.

Go in peace my son, and may the gods of Drengin bring you much meat.

First, kudos for apologizing. That's nice to see on a board.

Second, ut appears you have to use Impulse for the (official) new patch. Meaning, you don't have to search through boards, the update will show up on Impulse (as it would have in SC, but amyway). So, keep that in mind. Impulse is your friend.

--------------------

Back to the original topic. I for one am glad to see the install bug is fixed with ToA in Impulse (even though I had to reinstall it). On both of my computers I had to dig up the launcher, which is fine, but somewhat unprofessional.

Secondly, the research "bug" is midly annoying on my end, but nowhere near as annoying as the random crashes I get on a fairly regular basis. I never had GalCiv crash before, but ToA does it fairly frequently.

Anyway, I am patiently awaiting the patch. Sure, ToA is pretty buggy compared to Stardock's previous releases, but it isn't a reason to write them off as a company. If you want to think "your" small(er) gaming company is fading, you will find reasons.

You're talking about the 1.92 Alpha or did I miss a post about 1.95 being released?

1.95 is not out yet, but when it is, it will be on Impulse. For now there's just the 1.92 zip file in the dev journals.

So you are saying it will not be available on Stardock Central? Impulse is still new with some bugs to iron out. I know this because I have a problem with it recognizing that Twilight of the Arnor as being installed (Impulse thinks its not). I have tried to download it and I get 'connecting..." for half an hour with no results. It updates games fine for me, but will not download anew. I have reported this to stardock tech support and have a case number and have also reported the issue in more detail than here in the Impulse forum.

Is there a technical reason it will not be available on SDC or are you guys trying to get/force everyone onto Impulse??

Anthony

Can someone help a noob out and please let me know what Impulse is and where it can be accessed? I have always just used Stardock for all my updates and have only recently discovered the forums so I'm a little out of the loop. I've been looking forward to this patch since the Research bug cropped up on my games as well plus I'm sure there will be additional cool fixes and additions to the already great game.

I was having this problem to, but logging into Impulse this evening, it updated itself and now recogizes TA.

Now for my question- Is the new patch compatible with saves from the previous version (pre-zip patch from last week)?

As Stravo said, could someone please point the way to Impulse for those of us who have no idea what it is?

Go to http://galciv2.com/ You will see in the middle under News...

With the Impulse launch this week along with The Political Machine 2008 release, it's been a busy week. But for our next magical trick, we're also releasing the first significant update to Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor. You can get a preview of some of the changes here.

You will need to use Impulse to get it. Go here to get Impulse.

They have made it available under Stardock Central as well as Impulse.
