Fleet Upgrade Strategy?

I saw a post where the person said they were upgrading their ships as economy permits? I can't seem to figure out how to upgrade existing ships already in service. Or did I read the post wrong? It would be very handy if I could upgrade 20 ships of the same design already in service.

If you go to the upgrade screen for a particular ship, you will see a little checkbox in the upper left hand corner which allows you to upgrade all ships of the same type.
