Where to start?

Start what you ask? Read my article "Introductions From a n00b" and you will understand what I'm asking. Now that I have purchased and downloaded Object Desktop 2008, where should I begin? Object Desktop 2008 is a sea of programs. Quite confusing for a self confessed n00b in the arena of customizing ones OS. I'm excited, but so confused.

I want to customize my desktop to my liking, not microsofts, not to the many talented peeps who have mastered the customizing jondra.  (Did I spell that right? Insert jafo plug-in here.) Now that I have my sea of programs, where should I begin when starting out to customize my OS?

With that said...

I'm off to surf the Impulse Community for help. Stay tuned n00bs as I continue my quest to become a non-n00b...

When you start from the very beginning . .  it's a very good place to start.
When you read you begin with A, B, C and when you skin you begin with  . . well . . the rhyme and cadence break down here.  (:(

I start with a blind usually.  But many start with a wallpaper.

Below are links to blinds and walls sorted by Overall download count.
WindowBlinds
Walls

My docks and icons usually come from that base.  Then I go through the widget library to see what I might like and what might fit in with the rest.

There is a screenshot gallery here at wincustomize where you can see images of what some members have done.  There is also a monthly post of what folks have on their rigs.

I'm one of those that starts with a wallpaper, really for only one reason, not all WindowBlinds come with a wall.

I just find it easier to start that way and then go find the other elements that match up, either color or theme wise. If the WindowBlind you pick is popular you will find that others have made elements (cursor, icons, DX Objects and Widets etc.) to fill out the theme. Or you just put things together that you like. Remember, it's your desktop, you should like it.  ;)

Well... I tell ya there is really no help in using the sea of programs that come with Object Desktop. At least not Skin Studio 6. There is a tutorial started by Island Dog I think, but it was only an introduction with a reference that there would be more to follow. I could not find anymore from him or anyone else. Real life has a way of getting in the way.

If anyone knows of good tutorials on how to customize Vista with Skin Studio please point me in that direction.

SkinStudio is just the program used to build the skins. Try reading through this: Skinning Your PC: Tutorial Index
