Windows XP SP3 Has Issues

If Windows XP SP2 works just fine, don't bother updating

I don't know if you already knew this, but Windows XP SP3 has issues; reboot issues to be precise. I downloaded and installed SP3 on my machine, and after it's installed, of course, you have to reboot. The sucky thing is that Windows XP SP3 causes an endless loop of rebooting your machine after about 15-30 seconds. Safe mode does the same thing. If you don't have a dual-boot system, this can become quite a mess.

So why did Microsoft release a faulty service pack? Because they included an Intel Processor Driver called intelppm.sys This conflicts with computers running an AMD Processor (such as mine). There is a tool which supposedly fixes this boot problem. Visit Jesper's Blog to download this tool. It's a vbScript app which removes the intellppm.sys driver from being installed on SP3. Does it work? I have yet to find out.

If XP SP2 works just fine, don't bother updating. Don't let Automatic updates nag you about installing SP3. If you experience problems, uninstall SP3, and ignore any Windows messages regarding to installing SP3. I'm gonna stick with SP2. I haven't found any other issues yet, because I can't run the stupid thing. Google Windows XP SP3 Reboot Problems, and there are over 2.7 million hits!

Being a sucker for punishment thought I would give his tool a try and as I type my PC is booting up with SP3 on it so looks good so far.

VistArtXPosed sorry to hear that SP3 has caused you problems. Yeah I'm running a computer with an Intel processor so I haven't had any problems.

You would have thought the MS would have had the covered. I wonder if the same problem is in SP1 for Vista? I also wonder if anything is showing up on the MS site about this problem?

Ok so ran the remove tool from Jesper's Blog and ran update again and all worked well.

I wouldn't have posted the product key in full view.

The problem doesn't occur if you burn a disc using the iso
I have done this on the other PC here, that did have the continuous reboot problem with an AMD processor.

I believe that it wasn't Microsoft's fault. It was the manufactures...

As with any patch/service pack, Service Pack 3 for Windows XP has not been without its hiccups. This is more or less standard, as Microsoft can't test every possible configuration out there.

However, one issue has come up that's causing some finger pointing and claims of an OEM taking a shortcut, a shortcut Microsoft warned them not to take.

You are quite right, liquidguru. It was not Microsoft's fault. It was down to HP who had ample time to test versions of SP3 before the release and failed to see the issue.

Microsoft are asking HP customers with AMD chips to refrain from installing SP3 whilst they and HP sort out the problem. An official patch from Microsoft will be released in a few days  :)

I got nailed with this as well. I have an HP Pavillion Media Center PC with an AMD processor.

It must be really only a HP thing, as my Sony laptop (AMD Mobile 2200) didn't have any problems during and after the SP3 install.

So, has this problem been fixed? I just received my adobe cs4 stuff and it asks for xp sp3 to be installed. Everything also says to update thru Windows Update but I can't find it on there either. Any news from anyone? Thank you, RAD

Yeah, I couldn't install visual styles/themes and what not, until I applied the patch, all is working fine now.

 

Microsoft is just a bug, and it just keeps on growing x_x
