SS6/PSP7 error

unable to open the file" align=baseline>

I have four edit pages in SS6 that I am unable to open any of the files via the "edit" button. attempting to open any of the images in PSP7 brings up an error window stating "unable to open the file".

anyone with any thoughts on what may be the cause?

nope, it is a 100% thing, the only way to open the files is directly through psp.

When I first started using SKS6 I had your problem occasionally, but it hasn't done it for a while. Go into PSP7 and re save the file. It's probably a bug in 6. Try Support, maybe they can give you a better answer.

Good luck

Good luck

Goldwing,

thanks for you suggestions. even after performing a "save as" I still am unable to open those file from sks. I have talked with support before, the last sent report was 6/28 for which there has been no response. looks like something I need to work around for the time being.

Just an idea, try saving as PNG to a location, then re import the file. Hope this helps, I think SKS6 gets confused, not sure.

nope, I have already saved the files as png's and imported them as png/tga's but they still won't open. I may not be understanding you, are you suggesting to import as a png and turn of the conversion to tga, or still let the SS6 convert the file?

I am having a similar problem in SKS6 also, but I am using PaintShop Pro XI. There are several areas in SKS6 that when I go to open the image for editing, PaintShop Pro starts to open, but then it just closes. I have already reported this to Stardock personnel, so hopefully my issue will get fixed soon and possibly even resolve this issue.

would these by chance be;

edit uis2 frames, edit control panel shell style, edit shell style icons and pictures and edit shell style bars and arrows. these are the ones that are giving me connips.

You got what I meant right. Sorry your having this problem, I had this problem too but it disappeared after a while. Wish I could figure out or remember what I did. ;p All is good for me now , so there is hope.

Update

I think your problem might be in the default graphics. Are they BMP? What are the pages you can't open.

Not only that, but is is really irritating when you have tree view set to show, and click "Apply" and the entire background area of the tree area changes from the default blue to whatever color is set as the window color in the theme. Super hard to see white text on white! This only occurs in Windows XP.

Lightstar, thank you. it's good to know the problem is not me, my computer or my graphics program.

Ok it sounds like you are trying to open a indexed file format. If in PSP when you save as PNG it is still indexed doing this. Try saving to a flat format to unindex the file by saving as a Jpeg image. Then you will need to open the image again and remove whatever background format is added via the Jpeg and then save as a PNG.
Sounds wild right. But I'm fairly sure this is the problem. You will find this with PSP a lot for it opens the file no matter what. But it does not remove the indexing without adding a flat format as with saving to a Jpeg. Bit-map can also be used. But I find a lot of bit-map images with encoding which can cause other problems.

If you want you can send me a sample file and I'll see what else may be the cause.
You know how to get in touch Goldwing - do so if you need help with this.

Also with bitmaps and/or TGA with SKS6 a lot of times you cannot import correctly or that at all. They have to be placed in the folder and then selected as the image to be used for whatever region. There are a few parts/regions that require this option of placing of the images. For many good reasons this a required to make the whole machine work correctly. I know that is hard to understand. But actually placement is a good trick with the right images.

Shelby, do you mean to increase the thingamabob with the whatchamacallit to make it a whomever? :)

I think I understand what you're implying. It's like (with SS5), the logoff image is 256 colors. To overcome this I made and saved an image with the same file name in another directory and then moved it to the WB folder and had it overwrite the original thereby increasing the color count.

I've asked Goldwing about this also but please continue to weigh in on this, I do want to understand what can be done and what can not be done. it sounds like the native format can be overcome would you mind explaining it in another fashion.

What I am trying to do is directly open from within SKS6 and image that is already in use in an area discussed above, Paint Shop Pro starts to open, and then closes. Working around the problem I already know how to do, I just open and edit the image directly in the themes folder, which means it does not have and indexed file format problems. I would just like to see SKS6 fixed.

Well I hate to say it there LightStar - but I have just opened almost everyone of the parts you have mentioned and with Paint Shop Pro Photo 12 with no problems what so ever. For WB Diamond - bmp,png and tga's with no problems. From the edit button in SKS6.

Please send me the file you are having problems with. I would love to test it here and see if it is the program or something else. But mine here is not having that problem at all.
Not saying much for PSP... but I usually use Photoshop cs3 here for editing anything but gif images.

pretty amazing and confuses the issue to some degree. I really don't know what the issues actually are however I don't think it is the images themselves. I've attempting open these images from other blinds and have the same result, "unable to open the file". I had this issue with a couple of additional images when I was using SS5 but not with any of the standard images.

So, if I could open these images with a previous version of skin studio and after updated skin studio I am unable to do so, I think the problem lies with skin studio.

could you expand on what an indexed file format is and how it fits into the overall picture.

OK Light Star and Wimpy here is what I found and I have a fix I beleive ...

Open PSP and go to file/preferences/file format associations
there select the file formats to be opened with PSP.
Then go to SKS6 and go to tools/preferences
on the advanced tab where it says "when editing use the following operation
set this for OPEN.

Try opening the shell styles again - it should work in XP
I found this problem only in XP for my Vista is set for custom to use the program I choose.
Which is usually Photoshop CS3 - but some people do not have this and use PSP.
There is no problem with a custom setting for PSP in Vista - just for XP as I see it here.
Good luck and I hope this fix works for you all. If not let me know and I'll look into this even further to figure it out for you. I know it is needed to do what you want with the program and if there is a way I'll find it!
