Please slam my game

Please slam my game

Far be it for me to invite scorn and ridicule on our hard work in the form of Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor but let's face it, GalCiv has long since stopped being any sort of traditional "product".  We love working on it. If I didn't work at Stardock, I'd be modding it in my spare time.  But I do work at Stardock so that means I still get to mod it in my spare time but I have the source code.

That said, in this post can you list the 5 things you would want changed or fixed about Twilight of the Arnor first.  Not things that you eventually want changed or modified or whatever but 5 things that you would want done as soon as possible.

I'll then read through your lists and put together a summary and start working on them at night after working on The Political Machine during the day. :)

Don't feel bad for me, the GalCiv team wanted to go right on to making a GalCiv III but I'm integrating them into the fantasy strategy game team instead.  So I deserve some scorn and ridicule.

The only thing that I can honestly say is bugging me is:

Can we please get a little arrowhead at the top of red war lines in the Treaties screen to indicate who declared war on who, so it's easy to pick war mongers and know who doesn't like who at an even quicker glance?

ie: Korath -------> Terran

Cheers Brad, your game is incredible!

I haven't been playing very long so I will reserve the ones that I don't use for future editing :)

1) External shipyard (either from the main menu or as a stand alone program)
2) Reserved
3) Reserved
4) Reserved
5) Reserved

You guys have made a wonderful game and should be proud. I recently picked up Sins and think I like GalCiv2 more. Of course I seem to be better at turn-based than real-time.

Actually, Thalan AI has done OK in my last 3 games, so I retract my "feedback" to buff them further.

My 5 things i would like to see in TA.

1) Constructors should be able to carry more modules. In the late game 1 constructor should be able to build an entire upgraded starbase, since it has enough space to have multible modules in it. Right now its to much "dumb" micromanagement.

2) More aggresive AI, when they declare on you, they should attack you. Not declare and than leave you alone.

3) More diplomatic options, like threathing or convince people to break a treaty, be able to break a treaty yourself.
And even more fun......The power to make a team/coalition in the game, 3 or more people all allied to eachother!!.

4) I like the mouswheel option that somebody described, like sins or SC, zoom in were the mouse stands.

5) Be able to have vassals!~

6) Do something about the mop up end of the game.

7) more players in a big galaxy!!

8) teach me how to count :P

Release a build that doesn't crash to desktop.I've played an awful lot of Galciv2 builds and not one of them has been without CTD errors. I understand that the game is complex, and that complexity breeds errors, but consistantly releasing new patches, all of which contain fatal errors is a shockingly poor effort and works to undermine Stardock's entire anti-piracy policy.I remember reading the origional Stardock-Starforce drama just before I bought a copy of Galciv2 and hearing "By releasing frequent, convenient, free updates, we reward people for buying the game." which I thought was perfectly reasonable and a good argument and have since bought galciv2, both expansions and sins of a solar empire either via retail or directly from stardock and have enjoyed them both immensely. What bothers me now is that despite all of the frequent, convenient, free updates I still can't finish a game without having to restart the application at least once.I get it, the game is constantly under development and as such constantly has bugs. It may be unavoidable, but it is still a gigantic crock of shit.

I think it's a pretty amazing achievement to produce a popular game, update it on a frequent basis, and still ensure that it crashes on just a handful of customers' systems. I applaud you for taking the time to work closely with the development team to provide them with the exceptional level of detail about your system needed to pull this off.
[/sarcasm]

If you've truly provided SD with all the info you can to help fix this, and they haven't been able to fix it in a reasonable time, maybe it's just The Universe's way of saying you need to play a different game.

I remember a post by someone who REFUSED to relinquish their PC details and the nature of the crashes. They didn't see why they should take part in fixing a released game since it should be working fine, they didn't pay for a 'beta release'. /eyeroll

1. Zoom to cursor. I play Supreme Commander pretty much online and everytime I start GalCiv and zoom around I feel disabled when it doesn't zoom to cursor. You guys are working on Demigod, so you know what I mean. Oh, I heard it's in Sins too, but I haven't played it. Anyway, make it an option.

Heh, at this point, any complaints I have are incredibly minor.

I guess if I had one minor wish, it'd be that ship naming wasn't so flavorless. Seeing as the game considers anything medium size or up a "capital ship", how about letting us put text files with ship names in them for the game to choose from? So instead of getting Leviathan 1,2,3,4... etc, the game will automatically pull a name from TerranShipNames.txt. Sure, we can rename them ourselves, but having a list to pull from is just so much easier.

Hardly bashing, sorry. :p

1. Espionage fix - As previously mentioned.

2. Starbase construction - Make the constructors work like miners, including automation. This is one of the most frustrating parts of the game

3. External ship editor - This would be too much fun.

4. I'll throw in a vote for the automated/random ship names mentioned above. Perhaps a file with sections based on hull size that we can pre-populate. It would give ships a little more character.

That's all I can think of right now. Overall, it's an outstanding game.

One thing only:I wish there would be a module for ships to repair starbases! That is the only thing I could think of right now, the others made great suggestions already Do all of it, hehe.

You can already do that. Just send a constructor over to your damaged starbase and it'll give you the option to repair +20 HP or so.

* Total newbie post. The community itself may be able to deal with me.

This may be the dumbest thing on Earth, but I hate the Save/Load system. I don't have ToA or anything, so this is probably irrelevant. I just feel like complaining.

Save and Load need to be separate buttons. I can't tell you how many times I've clicked "Load/Save" then double-clicked on my desired save, only to load that game, losing (sometimes) a tremendous amount of progress. At the very least, disallow the double-click, so you will be forced to hit the appropriate button.

I dunno. Now that I think about it, there might already be a setting for this or something. If not, it's probably too dumb to implement since theoretically I have suffered enough to learn my lesson. Now, I click "Quick Save" before I make an attempt at a named save.

This reminds me, is there not a way you can save your ship designs, so that you can reuse them in different games? I know I see people saying 'external ship editor,' but that sounds a bit beyond what I want.

You know, you pretty much get some favorite ship configurations once you play a few times, and you even research techs that you know will lead you to a particular ship. I just don't want to have to build every ship from scratch every game, especially when I can tell you how I want to configure most of my ships before I even start a game.

I've played Gal Civ for a good while now, it's a fantastic game and second in my opinion only to Civ (and i say that simply because Civ was the first to do this really really fucking well).

I've bought Twilight of Arnor but have yet  to play it because i've been ridicuously busy in real life, i'll give it a whirl tonight but can i just take a chance to say to the entire stardock team, thanks for all the effort - your past two releases have been a joy to play.

Dead on mate.

1. The old icons for embasy and starport
2. Possibility to play the previous campaigns with the new engine
3. Zoom to cursor everywhere (even in the tech trees)
4. The stretched portraits in the Trade window.
I can't see anything else because ToA is almost perfect.

Hehe, i've been wanting these for a while, Kryo, Scott, Cari, and Jesse can attest to it:

1. Bump, Spec, and Light (not city light) maps for planets.
2. Different Cloud textures for the exotic worlds; white puffy clouds on toxic worlds doesn't fit well, for example.
3. Definable (custom) Cloud and City Light textures for planets in CustomPlanets.xml.

(This one i brought up to Scott, but they were too late to be worked on for the release):
4. Video letterboxing for Widescreen resolutions (The oval shaped terrorstar in the main menu still gets me, heh. I suggested some fixes for the main screen at least to Scott a while back, but like i said, this was a low priority issue at the time).

(This last one is a personal one):
5. Starbases upgradable by purchasing modules with lots of cash, without the need for constructors, in addition to the contructor method. -OR- the abiltiy to put more than one constructor module on a constructor.

If you like the idea of bump, spec, and light maps for planets, or new cloud maps (different ones for the special environment worlds) i can work on them in my spare time. I still have all my dev files for the planet textures i made in twilight, so it wouldn't be that difficult for me to make additional maps for them.

Also, just a bit of shameless advertising here, but i will soon be completing my High-Res Graphics Mod for Twilight. If you are getting into a modding / dabbling mood, i would very much appreciate your input on it, and it would be great if you'd like to try out a Beta version. What all it does is listed in the thread i linked to above. Basically it's an all-new powerhouse upgrade of my original mod for dark avatar. And since i made the planet textures for Twilight, i made some additional "not available anywhere else" textures to go in the new HRG mod, all in the same style as the textures done for the Twilight release version. And of course they're all in Higher Resolution (optimized to be memory-friendly too). It, would be great if you'd like to check it out.

And that concludes my Two Cents. Everyone have a good day!

Great thread. Here are the top 5 things I would like added right away:

1. A "No Tech Brokering" option.
2. A "No Tech Brokering" option.
3. A "No Tech Brokering" option.
4. A "No Tech Brokering" option.
5. A "No Tech Brokering" option.

And I know you are looking for scorn and such, but let me say the game is so damn good, and has come SUCH a long way from the first version of GalCivII that a lot of us beta-tested, it is just flat remarkable.

A job well done, Mr. Wardell.

1. Fix that MCC if you haven't already, there's really no reason not to have addressed this by now.

2. The option to have the mouse wheel zoom center on the cursor would be amazing for larger galaxies. After playing supreme commander, you really don't want the screen to go anywhere else.

3. GCC news shouldn't mention events concerning you haven't made first contact with if the player has blind exploration on, at least for the first year or two of the game.

4. I don't think ALL the starbase fortification techs should be a prerequisite for the first set of starbase assist modules. IMO that makes it highly unlikely that you'll get starbase assist modules early enough for them to be a significant factor in a battle without those impractical starbase array techniques.

5... well, I can't think of anything else at the moment. I made my second game of TA an immense map and I'm still not finished, so I haven't played under too many scenarios.

I know some people have been upset with the Yor's economic performance, but I honestly haven't found them too bad (admittedly I've just had one game with them). As long as you get some good charging stalks researched and go for high planetary populations, things seem to work out just fine. If anything, my economy seemed to be at an advantage once my populations started hitting their limits.

Oh wait, for my #5: fixing the video scaling. I play on a 16:10 wide-screen LCD which makes a lot of the videos look horrible.

The original point is a valid one to make, and an immature reply like this would never come from Stardock. So the game never crashes on your system. Good for you. However, your good fortune is most likely more a case of "luck of the draw" than any exceptional skill on your part. If one in a thousand of us are getting crashes, that is too many. Many of us have indeed "provided the exceptional level of detail" about our systems, and continue to patiently, hopefully work with SD in every way we can, giving them all the information and files requested. We do so because we appreciate the product and believe it is worth the effort.

Telling the poster to just go play another game is childish. And anyway, there *is* no other game that measures up to this one. That is why I continue playing it despite the crashes. That, and the confidence that SD will continue to work toward greater stability of the game on all systems.

Hi!

1) I would like a shortcut key that has the same functionality as the middle mouse button (rotating ships). Preferably a key in the lower left of the keyboard since I would use this a *lot* when designing ships.

The middle mouse button is hard to use on most mice cause of the wheel.

2) Need more time to play this awesome game!

.The "borders" in galciv are just your sphere influence. There are no real borders in space, since that would not be doable to control anyway. There are no borders on oceans either.

No, but there are recognized territories and ships can be boarded, seized, and/or fired upon if they enter the coastal waters of another nation without sparking a war. Further, even if that is the way things are, that doesn't mean that it is the way things need to be or even ought to be.

To throw my two cents in as well...

1: I agree the espionage system needs a change. Maybe break it into two parts, a 'gathering info about another race' and everything else, i.e. tech stealing, production stoppages... and maybe with the second part and a few new features, insurection provoking, sabatoge, and maybe others.
Have two sliders, one to gather info, and the second to make spys for all the rest of the stuff.

2: Would love to see a revamped/improved starship/fleet management screen. And I am refering to the one on the same button as the planet overview.

3: Wish list item I would like to see, ability to add a second prereq tech in the tech trees. Just make it available so people can use it to mod with as they like.

4: Do something about the tech option changes with choosing an ethical alignment. Right now there are limited technology differences with the various ethical alignments. And for the most part the same ones have been in place since DA. The new racial tech tress was a grand chance to really do something about that and it could have made a huge difference. If it had not been more or less ignored.
If I could ask for anything, Frogboy, it would be:

Ethics Editor (at least the names of the ethics, maybe an ability for more paths or more tech choices)... but that might be hard. I don't know how the ethics are programmed.

NO TECH BROKERING! Please... please...

I'm sorry. I didn't realise that in buying a copy of a game and expecting it to work properly at some point I was being unreasonable. It is not my job to help out the Stardock staff with making their game better I just buy their products and as a customer I expect them to work properly at least eventually.

As a pretty long time gamer my expectations are pretty realistic, retail builds are buggy, it happens. Maybe the first patch won't get all the bugs. But two years and two expansion packs later and a game that prides itself on its regular updates still does not run consistantly. And the funny thing is old crashes seem to go away, when I read changelogs I recognise crashes I was getting, but every version brings a new one.

That is not my mistake. No other game does that.

Even now, first game of TA I played since the actual retail product was released ended when the application crashed to the desktop.

hmmm 5 things to look at;

1. Planetary invasion screen add combat troops/war machines fighting on the screen(maybe differnt graphics for different units...)

2. Graphics that make worlds look different they all seem to have the same look after awhile maybe they can change to become terraformed by the race that controls them for the longest time....(maybe several special planet looks that randomly appear in the game).

3. The ability to loan your allies cash as per the loans you can get...

4. The ability for spies to defend themselves.

5. Spy gear that changes the look of your spies...

Thanks for the great game
