How do I know what fighters and bombers are best for in game?

Hi the way I thought of it was bombers were best for bombing any ship(non airborne) and fighters were used solely for taking down bombers and other fighter jets but the more I read Im starting to believe what Ive just said isnt the case.

Just to finally say because of the above Im wandering which of these units is best for certain unit types?

You're not totally wrong. Bombers are good destroying structures and fighters are good for shooting down other fighters and bombers, but that isn't the extent of it.

Fighters are good vs other fighters and bombers and they are also good against long range frigates (TEC Javelis, Advent Illuminator, Vasari Assailant). Fighters are also good against scouts and civilian ships (constructors, trade ships, etc).

Bombers are good against structures, as I mentioned before, but they are also very strong against heavy cruisers, and are pretty good against capital ships as well. They're mediocre against frigates and support cruisers.

I agree with what James said, with the addition to make them truly effective you have to manage what they attack. The stk craft ai is a little stupid.

Check out the reference chart from Zyrxil stickied at the top of the Strategy forum. It's got a nice damage/armor chart that's very helpful to determine what is best against what, whether it's strikecraft or any other ship.

Also if there's nothing to counter them put them on hold position and they fire more. I think one salvo if its concentrated does something like 600 dam.(10bomber)

fighters are like ur starbucks' and bombers can be used to drop carpets.
