steep increase in the cost of technologies

steep increase in the cost of technologies

Hi!

Playing as the humans I noticed a very sudden and steep increase in the cost of technologies. At one point the cost of Harpoon II was 2850 (or there about), a few turns a few technologies and few planets conquered and an assumption of the good ethic path later the cost was over 8000. Is this a bug or something I have not grasped with the working of the game?

Playing TA at the largest map.

I reported earlier in the thread about the inflation problem playing as the Altarians with a research bonus. Now I'm playing as the Terrans without a research bonus(though I am Technologists) and almost 5 years in I haven't seen the increases jumps at all.

Interesting, if you play and encounter the issue, does the research bonus report properly in the civ manager?

I reported the sudden doubling of my research cost as a possible bug back on May 2 but no one responded. (:(
Research Cost Bug? - ToA v1.91

I sent in a zip of the saved game just before and after the doubling to Cari Begle

I'll have to check next time I run into the bug. I think I overwrote the save of the bugged altarian game because after a couple of jumps it was getting obvious how hard it would of been to finish. May have to wait till I start a new game, since the Terran game is most likely not going to have the bug this late.

Kryo - Can you check with Cari & Brad and see if this is a candidate for a hotfix and if they still need more saves to isolate the alleged bug?

I've noticed this as well - my cost for research will stay roughly the same, it may increase slightly over time (e.g. the cost on doom ray starts at ~6k, then goes up to 7k a while later when I next check), and then at some point will have an absolutely massive increase (e.g. it started off at ~6k, ended the game with it nearer 26k I think). This was with the yor without any (race or political party) research bonuses on a small map. As the humans in the campaign I'm also noticing the same problem, with research costs increasing suddenly by about 2-3 times their previous cost.

Everyone's still on PM08, so unfortuantely there's not really any way for a TA hotfix until that's done.

I like the "alleged" thing because I've seen a few "bugs" posted that would be game breakers for me and no real official response as to whether they are bugs or not.

At this point, for the first time ever, I've decided to hold off on getting a galciv product until after the first patch (I usually don't do beta but do buy on release day).

I don't know how many times I've posted (on various forums) how amazing Stardock is about supporting their games (as one of many reasons to get galciv 1/2) - but this is not what I'd call amazing support for a fresh release. One can't even be sure that an issue is really a bug due to no real significant SD response to the issue. :-/

Just saying...

Part of me is also a little disappointed in how the potential bugs are being handled. I haven't heard much anything from posts about whether very low trade route income is a bug. But I can also understand why no comment would be made so that they would not be seen by reviewers. Right now everyone can sit guessing whether something is a bug or not and hopefully reviewers won't have them or won't notice them. I can't say I would do things much differently. I do want ToA to get well reviewed because I think it is great and I want to see a sequel and future support for it. I also would like for turn based strategy games to get more attention. However, despite all the potential bugs, I do find the game is well worth it, and I suspect many of these *bugs* are readily fixable (especially since many were not present in some of the later betas).

Kryo - Is PM08 due in the next week or something? If this issue was introduced with the last update... seems like it potentially might not be too hard to reverse if it was an simple cost modifier. I haven't been playing enough to know if this is real or not, but based on the pro's listing here it seems like it could be very real...

Same for me, the game presents the bug and I quitted by campaign because of that. When can we expect a fix?

K.

I am also almost positive taking research bonus in your race ability affects the sudden tech increases.

Also note that a tech doubling only happens at the very moment when you finish a tech!

Fleet Battle Tactics has gone from 2226 to 15495 (almost 700%). I believe I got a tripling of costs when I completed Invention Cities (Yor). Unlike the game where I had a 5% bonus and the costs increased mildly after every completion, here I get tremendous jumps after selected techs, but no increase after most techs.

What's the point in reseaching the Research Tree when you get a change of magnitude in costs for an incremental change in ability?

I'd like to load an autosave to verify when exactly the costs double but I get so many CTDs and freezes that I autosave every 3 turns (once the Dread Lords events occured and the game immediately CTD...I guess it got scared).

I hate to have to say it, but this game isn't fun anymore.

I've noticed it happening after accuiring techs that add to research ability. I've also encountered this in pretty much all of my games so far.

Until the patch I am going to play something else. The game is a lot of fun, but this is a game killer.

A game killer, yes. I also quit at this time.

I finally managed to win my game through diplo victory, but it was not fun at all.
I had all techno costs doubled a second time, and then other increases.
Overall, for example, "Technology Victory" went from 33000 at the beginning to 200000 at the end of the game. I guess that it should have been 50000 by "inflation" (but even this "inflation" does not seem to be documented).

In my game the doubling also happened when finishing a tech, but reloading and changing the researched tech did not prevent it to happen.
I kept a save game 2 turns before the first doubling, but I did not notice immediately the second one.

I don't think it is strictly research bonus or research ability modification. I just had it happen playing Yor with no research bonus on an immense map. I noticed precisely when it happened, as I was about to research basic logistics (2 weeks), but went for advancing my collectives tech instead. As soon as the collective tech levelled, everything on the board doubled. Logistics went up to 4. After that point, I noticed another doubling a few turns later---but I don't remember what caused it that time.

I suppose the only thing that was adjusting my research ability were a few resources being mined and upgraded.

Anyway, I'm done with this game for now. I'm going back to Space Empires or DA until this gets fixed. It's too bad as its a good game otherwise. I can't believe they aren't all over this bug and out with a patch yesterday.

Just noticed this bug myself and sucks. Because it not only bogs the AI down, it Bogs you down. Sitting around 20 turns waiting for a simple tech to finish is crap. Don't know what they did, but whatever it was this was not the case in the last beta before the release. So whatever you added to the final did it.

Keep wanting to play TA. But things like this are frustrating. And if we have to wait for PM to come out before they address this, then that sucks too.

By the way I was playing with the First release of TA, not the update that I see they released May 1st. I was hoping that would fix it. But I see people are having the problem still.

I've also experienced the problem, although for me it makes the game a lot easier. I prioritize research from the getgo, so when the doubling of costs start I'm usually several tiers in tech above all AIs. Its especially tasty with tech trading off.

But, it needs to be fixed because it does pretty much cripple every AI. They stop getting tech, and then have no way to respond to any attacks.

I wanted to add my "voice" to this thread as well.
I have played a couple of games in TA and tech inflation was rampant in each of those. In the beginning of last game Planetary Invasion was 10 turns to research. Lots of turns later (I had dozens of colonized planets and huge research bonuses) I noticed it was 30 turns to research!

It's a gamebreaker for me unfortunately :SNIFF!:

Please fix this!

Fix this now!

IT has already been 3 weeks?? since the release of the game. And we still got a gamebreaking bug, which apparently affects alot of people.

And with all due respect Kryo, isnt it a bit weird, to move all of your staff to an event, just after the release date of a game?

Wish they'd fix this sh!t. I can understand they're all working on PM, but does this games community have no importance? D: I used to be amazed by the support of this game, but now I'm quite disappointed.

I'm also chiming in with the crowd on this issue and respectfully request the awesome developers of GalCivII to consider adjusting technology inflation to more moderate levels. I really enjoy the game and prefer playing in slow-tech mode, but the way technology is handled currently isn't acceptable.

Hey Stardock, is there at least a way we can maybe revert back to the most recent beta of ToA? The research and trade route bugs weren't present in that. I think I would gladly uninstall the game and use the beta instead.
