Creating more diverse fleets

I dont know if this has already been mentioned somewhere on the forums but incase it hasn't:

Ive noticed alot of people complaining about players spamming 1-2 types of units and ignoring the rest. To combat this, why not introduce this idea where for each additional unit of the same type takes up extra fleet space.

Example:
Your first LRM takes up 4 fleet points.
The second one takes up 5
The third takes up 6. etc.

Either that or the first three take up 4 each, then the next three take up 7 each, etc. There could also be additional research added that allows people to spam certain units, but also has some negative effects to it (maybe very expensive or reduces combat effectiveness of other units?)

This would pretty much force players to build more diverse fleets because when crunch time came, a fleet made up of spammed units will only be half as big as a more diverse fleet.

Any thoughts?

Pretty bad idea. Selecting what units to use in battle is part of your overall strategy. Making everyone use every type of ships is as dumbed down as making everyone use one type of ship. Also this would be a pain in the ass to figure out what ships to queue when. You would have to pay attention to how many of what kind of ships you have at all times. I want choice, you say you want to "force" people to play the way you want. It's not the right way.

Also like I mentioned before there are only finite types of damage dealing units (Currently I would only consider Heavy Cruiser, Long Range Frigate, and Light Carrier as damage types). A fleet not made up mostly of a damage type unit will deal very little damage. Two fleets with few units of damage type will fight forever.

A lot of people complaining about other players, usually do so because they lose to them.

It seems that when you say "diverse fleets" you mean a fleet with a wide array of ships filling multiple roles.

The thing is, when others want "diverse fleets", they want a fleet that they can customize to suit a particular role/strategy.

It might work if you threw in a decimal point, otherwise everything would cost to much. Personally i think its a terrible idea, becuase you're not really making the game better but you're certainly making it more complex.

Well it depends on what situation your're in, overall you should have a very flexible fleet.

I agree with Astax 100% on this one.

I think its fine the way it is. The current way means newbies like myself can pick up the game and start trying stategies and concenrate on cordinated battles and counter attacks as opposed to button pressing. Also the current system encourages attacking and not turtling and the cap ships have abilities and the game has heaps of other things that takes a while to master while not prescribing to the idea of micromanagement hell. The current way also seems dam balanced to me compared with other games, thats why battles last so long because there isnt to much micromanagement to the point that only people who play every day know how to use it. It seems more about fleet composition than anything else. (Im all for making the game better but Im not for changes that could alienate a massive portion of players, hence why I like what was said, easy to pickup hard to master)

If people could convince me that adding more complexities would help the majority then maybe I would be for it but I think this is just going to add unecessary restrictions. Big fleets are big fleets and if someone is going to spam 1 kind of unit then they leave themselves open in other ways. Not sure if maybe you are thinking about advent illums here? Either way I am almost certain the devs will work towards an overall balance with the game, and when that happens if people spam units they will just get owned in another way.

Im not meaning to be a pest :) Its just the games in its infancy so I imagine the devs have heaps of plans and for myself personally I really enjoy how the game plays. Also as far as advent goes Im thinking ok if anything needs fixed do so but let them keep their abilities and give the other factions new abilities as well in relation to their strong points. I am enjoying so much the way the game plays cirrently that if updates get made that really restrict play or even water stuff down to much I may stick with the current patch. In saying this if the next patch is a content patch I think I will be updating asap hehe

Just to say no edit but sometimes spamming a certain unit type has a place, it just depends on the situation and with absolute hundreds of situations in this game we need flexibility not restrictions.

A lot of people complaining about other players, usually do so because they lose to them.

Totally agree which is why its so hard to judge what changes are needed.

That sorta reminds me of rise of nations where the more you build a unit, the more expensive it gets.
