Twilight of the "String Not Found"

Lotsa bugs here ...

I am getting a ton of "String Not Found" errors in TA. Yes, I uninstalled the Beta. In fact, I uninstalled *everything* back to the beginning of GC2 (including deleting everything in "My Games"), and re-installed ... a tedious task, made worse by the "infinite loop" problem in SDC that I see others ran into as well. After a couple of days of fooling around and finally getting the game all reinstalled, the "String Not Found problem is none the better. I am running Windows Vista.

String not foundString Not Found

Oh, and for good measure, I get *this* message everytime I go to log in to the metaverse.

Please don't tell me that the solution involves uninstalling and reinstalling again. ;p

I also had this error but, I think I just got it fixed.

I fear this is a Vista permissions error.

I noted that the last few people with this also had Vista installed. On a positive note, this may be a simple fix.

Try to right click the icon and run as administrator. If you have the whole Windows Protection scheme up, it'll warn you about the elevated permissions. Just allow it and it should start up. After it loaded, everything looked like it was working just fine.

Hope this works for you.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

I hope it works, because they just keep coming and coming ...

Hey, Magus, you're a genius! I just tried your suggestion and now it seems to work just fine. No more "string not found" errors so far. Thanks again.

All hail Magus!

I too suffered the debilitating humiliation and painful sores of String Not Found. I too reinstalled all the way through the basic game and it didn't change a thing. Magus brought be instant and tingly relief from the swelling and itching of String Not Found.

Thank you Magus!

Vista may be a better and more stable OS, but it too has it's problems :)

Great work Magnus! Karma to you! :)

I have Vista and this doesn't happen. Why would some strings show and some not?

That's weird, I have Vista as well and it doesn't happen.

Have you guys that have the String problem, have a Standard account and not an administrator? Or did you download and install the game without giving Stardock Central Administrator rights?

Oh yeah...forgot to mention that as well :) I have Vista as well (home premium) and I have experienced no problems.

For those who don't see the problem in Vista, do any of you run non-administrator accounts?

If I had to guess, the people with the problem probably have the User Account Control turned on.

Trying to access and change the .XML files probably causes the system to start throwing up access issues. When it can't find or access the text/data string it throws up the String Not Found error.

I had the problem. My User Account Control is turned on. Yes, I know how to shut it off but, I am lazy. Plus, if something I don't expect tries to run on my machine, I can always try to kill it.

In any case, I'm glad this fixed the issues for us all.

That's what I was thinking. Which suggests a coding/data placement issue.

Most programs, even games, run OK with UAC on. It's just a matter of StarDock figuring out how to reposition their data or add some new code or whatever to make sure that the user and program don't need administration privileges to run it properly.

No, I have UAC turned on and I'm not getting it.

We'll figure it out. Just need more data.

Here's the thing, why would some strings show up and other strings not show up? It's just weird.

How about any antivirus programs? Or any sort of utilities these people have installed on their computers? Would they be able to interfere with the game, or conflict in any way so that this happens?

It may have to do with the rights used to create the files.
