Anyone here play 'Stars!'?

I used to play Stars! back in the day and it actually made me a bit dissapointed in the scale of Sins.  I kind miss sending tens of thousands of battleships into a system and landing millions of troops to conquer the place.  Stripping entire stars systems completely bare of minerals with gargantual mining fleets.

I played my last game on the largest possible galaxy size and it lasted me four years. One game. Four years.

The sequel was cancelled, and its a shame.  But they were adding graphics and I think I prefered it when it ws left to your imagination.

Wow. Looks dreadfully boring. ;P

The only reason I can stand the turn-based-ness of GalCivII is because it's pretty to look at, and doesn't take me too long to get into. If it was more graph-esque or if I couldn't finish a lazy small map game in one sitting, I'd probably never play it.

I pre-ordered PM2008 only on the hopes that it plays similar enough to GalCiv that I'll like it. But hey - it was only twenty bones, anyway. Stardock can have my twenty bones, even if I don't play PM2008 much.

But I fully intend to. Beta testing FTW!

Yes I Played Stars! It was a fantastic game. I always loved the alternate reality race choices although if the AI was anything other than completely dumb I tended to get my ass handed to me. The resource/mining management part was probably my favorite, nothing quite like strip mining all those worlds of their precious resources with Trantor like supply lines flooding into my favorite construction world/base.

Oh yeah it was hard. I played for ages thinking I was the top dog in the galaxy, kicking my neighbors asses. Then I bumped into these guys who started blowing my shit up...I zoomed out the map completely and realized I had been playing for hours and hours conquering less than 5% of the map.....and that these new enemies owned 90% of the rest of it.

I was just a small fish in a big ocean after all!

Ulp!

Yes, it was a great game that was hard to learn,at least for me. It was alot of fun and if it had some polish to it I think it would be more popular then it is.

Hi!
Anyone here play 'Stars!'?
End of quote

I stil play. The community at Stars! Autohost isn't large (about 1000 players) but the old ones are returning, and new ones still knock pretty regularly. If you want to test your wits against LIVE opponents, you're most welcome!

BTW with usuall 3 turns per week a medium-sized game still last several months to finish. Huge packed games you've described we don't play anymore.
