Web site Beta Testers needed !! Thomas and Myself have been working on a new community web site devoted to DesktopX, the goal is to have a central location for things like: Tutorials Code Snippits Project News etc. The site is very much still in the BETA stage, but we want to try and get some feedback on what people think we should add, or change. Please use this thread to post comments, problems, suggestions. Thanks!

comments about the site? or comments on something ON the site (ie a snippet etc?)

comments on something ON the site (ie a snippet etc?)

OK

comments about things wrong, additions, etc should go here on this post, so we have one location to look at.
Comments are at the moment only possible on the news.

However, I've got a major update to the site coming up, which will allow comments on all sections. Later you'll be able to label/tag items as well.

seeing code on the front page in the 'coming soon' & 'updated snippets' section on the left

registered, got the email
- used the 'activate instantly' line
- top part of the page asked for email and pw / bottom part was for activate
- entered email/pw clicked the button and was left with the bottom part asking for activation (didn't) notice it now showed my name upper right - entered the code - was told it was already activated = maybe it should have taken me to the home page when I logged in?

The code you're seeing is from an old post where the text was parsed differently.
I'll be revising the whole login and register logic for the next update.
What you guys can do is try to submit various code snippets and see if the code is formatted and coloured correctly.

I checked out the site. Looks good to me. Clean, simple, easy to navigate. Since I'm not a programmer I like this idea and it will make a great repository to find scripts and help.

Hi David,

great idea  :CONGRAT: , new site looks good and I'll try to help you and Thomas. But...

Recently I have analyzed the download statistics for Featured DX widgets from the WC start page. Look at the results:

2004/2005 years: up to 1500
2006 year: 400 - 650
2007/2008 years: 100 - 350

You can see the quantity of downloads has fallen down more than in 4 times...  :SNIFF!:

The DesktopX community lost the best of its coders like Martin, Will Rose, Tiggs, etc. as well... There is only a few person which still try to think out and create something new. All the other just make a skins for old widgets (I think this is because of their own laziness...)

So I have two questions:
1. For whom you are going to do this site (who will read and study its content)?
2. Why you wish to work for other idlers (which will use your codes) free of charge? This is a hard work and I'm sure that someone should pay you and Thomas for it.

This is the place I am gonna spend my most of the summer vacations.

We where hoping it'd help get the DX community to grow. One of the things I want to add is a project section where people can create project pages for co-development where task would be set up. People with skills that fit the task could sign up and aid the development.

Another key feature with the site is that everything would be available in RSS (or other XML format) so it'd be very easy to browse code snippets. I've been thinking of a code snippet browser, and for that I needed a code repository. That was another reason for this site. Personally I'm not that concerned if it stays a niche site. As long as we can build up a nice community to supply the repository.

I haven't released many gadgets. However, I got many projects unreleased. While I don't think the whole projects aren't complete, there's many snippets that might be useful and I don't mind sharing.

Vad_M,

I understand, and i agree with a lot of what you said. But maybe this will help DX pick up a little steam. This is all on my dime, except the coding of the site and Thomas is very graciously donating that, he has put a TON of work into it. We had plans to get this out early last year, but both of us have these things called LIVES and they have been in the way a LOT.

I guess my thinking was mainly to have a great location for code snippets for me and anyone else who might want to make use of them. Yes, I agree with Vad that a lot of people just take code, make the same crud, and then plop out the same junk over and over. But My hope is that if the code base is larger people might be able to make some better widgets. My other goal was to have a place where people could come and put up something like..

Looking for a gadget that allows me to .....

If its a good idea than I would look into trying to make it, or maybe get others involved into making things. There are a lot of great graphics people and great coders, we need to combine them. If someone posts an idea, than its free to the world to come up with a solution, the only thing i would see as a perc is that they should get a copy of the final product free for the idea. Thus solving the problem they posted, and allowing the new gadget/widget to be sold or given away.

To be honest, i have lost a lot of my drive for DX over the past year, seeing how long it has taken for 3.5 to come out, and the promise of a "skinable" DX in 4.x was really going to be great, but it looks like it vanished. I know there is a HUGE market for these gadgets, but its in what stardock is doing now, MARKETING, people will give their $ away to anything to support their team, or driver, etc. But if its just a basic productivity gadget no one seems to think any amount is worth it.

I have not had any time to put into this lately and i wanted to at least see what the interest level is, before i decide to pay for more hosting..

Will post more later.. work calls.

Well, I for one would be willing to pay for DX packs and/or their development.Ones that work as they should with Vista.(damn UAC) and I'm cheap! Also Windows7 isn't that far away, what then? So many of the Objects on the WC site that I've tried are erratic, don't work at all, or simply make DesktopX crash, Widgets do slightly better. Desktops? Wrong resolutions. They're hardly worth using. Not because the're bad, just not compatable or interesting any more. Besides, just how many calenders, clocks and weather widgets does a guy need? It needs more WOW factor to get the public interested in DX again. Stardocks w-i-p media player is a good example of this. You're certainly the right people for the job. If you don't mind a end user/non-programer with time on his hands aboard, count me in, I'll test 'em 'til they break!lol P.S. Resolution independant DesktopThemes/objects would be most welcome , I'm stuck with 1024x768 for now and it seems there's 100+ different resolutions out there to choose from when I upgrade .Good Luck to everyone involved! :CONGRAT:

To be honest, i have lost a lot of my drive for DX over the past year, seeing how long it has taken for 3.5 to come out

Me too...

More than, it seems that I really begin to lose my interest to DX! Why? Because this "game with gadgets creation" takes too much time to be a hobby and to be free-of-charge.

If you remember I had this possibility more than 1,5 year ago because my business earned enough money for me. But now it is dead (you know...) And I must work to eat, to pay for my home, etc... However I have no time for this if I begin to do something with DX...

So I'm in a deadlock now. On the one hand I like DX and want make a gadgets. But on the other hand I can't do this because of a shortages of money in my purse. And I'm very, very sad by this reason.

One more thing. Stardock made a huge mistake when they created DesktopGadgets.com for sale a gadgets instead of making a special gallery on WC. It could bring quite good money and to help formation of the corresponding market.

The second big mistake is - Master Skins (not sure that I still wish to be a Master because such system is just a discrimination for other talented people who can make some improbable thing but can't sell it because of their WC rating). This considerably brakes the expansion of the market too and prevents a free competition.

As a result - time is lost. And I'm not sure that any efforts to return the people's interest for using DX, more over to buy any gadgets, will make a sense. However I'll try to help you with Desktopx.info.

I've been waiting for this! I'll sign up and check it out as soon as I have time.

Thanks for your efforts guys. I share your same concerns about DX. This new site is a step in the right direction and I hope it can be capitalized upon. :CONGRAT:

I hope it can be capitalized upon

May be, may be...  :d  So let's go forward!

By the way, I nearly finished a big VBScript program which read the Header of media files (like MP3, MP2, MPG, MPEG, AVI, WAV, etc...) and help to get the detailed information about these files (including ID3v1, ID3v2 and Extended INFO tags). This is very useful program for people who want to put in order the files in their Media Library. I'll send you the most important fragments of code after the finishing of all tests.

I made this program for a new Vista Media Player. But there is one fatal problem - DX 3.5 doesn't work with Windows Media Player ActiveX control...

In the beginning I hoped that Stardock will solve this problem. But the history of "Painful Borning" of DesktopX 3.5 has evidently shown us, that we can help itself only ourselves... So I should make my own code that will operate the Player. And it will be the next code I'll send you.

IN GOD WE TRUST!  ;)

Nice start to the site! I had the same activation hiccup as Bichur. I submitted a code snippet yesterday so I guess it's still in moderation.

I think a monthly best of DesktopX article would be a good addition. Choose some of the best widgets, gadgets, etc uploaded in the last month that exemplify the creativity of DX.
