It's no longer possible to access someone's MV profile

You used to be able to easily look up a person's MV profile and find their MV characters. That ability now appears to be totally gone for at least some users.

With the forum change when you click on someone's nickname, i.e. username, from within the forums, you go to their User Profile where there is a link to supposedly their Metaverse Profile. However that link is broken and only takes you to your own MV profile not the person's in question.

There is a very painful way to get around that problem by first looking up the person's username in the Forum Stats section of the Metaverse. Once you find the person's username in either the authors or commentors list then clicking on it gets you to the person's Metaverse Profile.

However the problem is that there appear to be users that have replied to posts in the forums but are not listed in the commentors or authors lists. Specifically the username I'm trying to find the metaverse characters for is sunburn4. I know he's made at least one reply to a thread (reply #268 of the https://forums.galciv2.com/157227/page/11 thread) but searching the commentors forum stats does not find any match for sunburn4 or any subset of his name.

This makes it impossible to find his MV profile.

I know this site is now low on the web teams priority list but there are still a number of unfinished items like this that have gone on for quite some time. I think we have all been very patient. When will these issues be addressed (if ever). Also how in hell can I find sunburn4's MV profile?

Also loss of the search function here is definitely not compensated by the suggestion of using google with a site search. Simply trying to find posts or replies by a specific commentor or author using google truly sucks. Some minimal on site search function if only for author/commentator should at least be provided.

Found him by sheer guesswork.

I assumed his character in the Metaverse would be named "Sunburn" or something like it and got lucky.
But a decent linking of this stuff would be nice... ;)

I included this in a recent roundup of outstanding issues since there was some time set aside for forums work. In any case, it's a pain but you can get to anyone's meta profile by just appending their account number on the URL in reply #1.

That indeed works quite well, as long as a post of the person can be found. :)

Painful rectal itch. How or why is anyone supposed to remember that?

Plus that doesn't answer why sunburn4 isn't listed as a commentor or any way to find an arbtary characters reply from which to extract their account number.

I noticed a while back that people who have posted or replied exclusively after the forum changes do not show up in the "forum stats". It appears the new ones are not being tallied/picked up by that function. That, combined with the degraded forums search, makes it quite hard to find people sometimes.

You don't need to. Just click the [malformed] link on their profile (sending you to your own page), and replace the id in the url with that from the end of the one you just came from.

I could probably hack together a greasemonkey script to fix it, but I doubt you've switched to firefox. :p

I just go to Metaverse--> High Scores ---> type in "Sunburn" on the "search top player" line and it pulls him right up.

Is that different or easier than doing all that stuff posted above?

That works for people who have the same/similar login name that they do for their character(s), but for people with totally different character names, it isnt useful.

Interestingly enough, this game and this forum is the only reason why I'm using Internet Explorer right now. For some reason, my Firefox doesn't display everything on the forum page properly.

In addition, Firefox doesn't seem to release memory once it grabs it. So if I once had 20 tabs open, it is still eating up a huge chunk of my RAM even when I minimize it or close most of the tabs. Internet Explorer will release most of the memory once you minimize it, even if I have a dozen windows open. This makes running GalCiv much easier because it doesn't have to access virtual memory as much.

Fluckers!

I wasn't aware of the SNL reference but this was a line used in Prep H commercials for many years.

Ah... I get it. Using my friend GW above as a convenient example, I click on "View GW Swicord's Profile" and that takes me to https://forums.galciv2.com/info/712145 where the 712145 is his account ID (as well as his member number). I do a quick ctrl-c (copy) of this and then click on the malformed Metaverse Profile link taking me to my own MV Profile at http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=sdnetaccount&acid=2547964 where I can simply highlight my account ID and ctrl-v (paste) in GW's taking me to where I want to go.

Yes this is better than looking up folks in the forum stats area. Thanks. :)
