Icons disappear after uninstalling Iconpackager

Icons disappear after uninstalling Iconpackager

Hello,

I posted this in the OS Customization forum but I figured I'd post here as well being that this is a support forum.  Here's the original post:

I was hoping someone on here could help me out.  I'm running the latest version of IconPackager (3.99.146  x86).  When I have this running my default Vista icons work as normal.  When I uninstall this program, a lot of icons change over to the blank document icon, some I can fix, some I can't.  When I re-install the program, everything works as normal.  Is anyone else having this issue?  Does anyone know of a fix?  Please help me if you can.  Reason I uninstalled it is that I was having some software issues and trying to find the issue.  Thanks for your help in advance.

If you can help in any way I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

I have NOT been able to get a live "sales type" person to answer their phone.

Please leave a voicemail if we are not available to take your call. We return calls in the order in which they were received. Generally, if you call on a Monday, for example, and we are still working on the emails from Sunday, we will return your call once we get into the tickets from Monday. We treat voice messages and emails equally so everyone ends up waiting their turn.

The nickname that you are using "HaywoodU" is not associated with an email address that has purchases attached to it, so I am not able to look up your ticket from your email address. Our response time is generally less than 48 business hours.

Here is the full return policy:

Please review our refund policy located at: https://www.stardock.com/stardock/sds_returns.html

We offer full refunds after tech support is utilized and is not able to resolve the issues. Specifically, we need to know:
1) Your product name and your subscription/serial number (include *all* the programs of ours that you are running)
2) Your hardware configuration (video card and CPU are the most important ones)
3) What version of Windows you are running
4) A complete detailed report of the issue including any errors that you received and how the problem can be replicated.
Please reply to this email with the information described above.

If these problems cannot be worked out by reasonable means, technical support will instruct you on how to receive a full refund.

If you do not wish to work with support on these problems, I can only offer a partial (75%) refund.

I'll try to say this in the nicest possible way.

The developers should apologise for their shoddy work in implementing an uninstaller, and should compensate for this problem by offering a tool to fix our icons X-(

Everyone seems to be experiencing the same problem, so why continue to treat it on an individual basis via snailpaced e-mail.

Is this problem to do with how Vista handles icons? or is this specifically app related?
It would be great to get some insight into this, because I'm at a total loss in knowing how to restore the few icons that I'm left blank with.

When you lost your icons, did you install the software through SDC or Impulse? and did you uninstall the software using the same?

What version of IconPackager did you download and install when this happened?

I have a support ticket that has been on hold for quite some time now, the ID is #PEQ-545409 btw.

IP was installed via Impulse, and it was the most recent non-beta release.
I also uninstalled it using the same version.
Re-installing it fixed the blank icons on my Start Menu and Windows Explorer (doesn't make sense), but certain 16x16 icons were left permanently blank, such as ones displayed on the systray, or on system tool apps such as AutoRuns, etc.

I believe the 16x16 icons originally went nuts after applying an Icon Package for the first time, such as the razerhid.exe icon on my systray which suddenly turned into a generic app icon, even though Windows Explorer and Total Commander both view razerhid.exe perfectly fine.

I have sinced upgraded to the latest BETA release, and while this has now fixed a different problem to do with Live folders, I am too scared to uninstall the application in-case it royally screws things up again.
Is there any guarantee with the latest release that the uninstall process is safe?

Installing IconPackager through Impulse all the times. Removed it both with Impulse and the standard solution from Windows.

I used IconPackager through Impulse and a lot of my icons have now changed to blank images. Even the shortcut to Impulse! I've changed it to default Windows Icons in IconPackager and repaired, rebuilt etc, but no luck. I am using Vista. Even if I right click, properties, and manually change the icon it doesn't hold. HELP. Thank you.

Would someone try creating a fresh administrator's user account in Vista and seeing if all their missing icons are visible there? It could offer a temporary workaround should this work.

My icons didn't return when I created a new admin account. I can see the correct icon if I right click the shortcut, properties, change icon, but the correct icon is not on the .exe file for most of my files. Also, I cannot change the icon when I right click either. The icon flashes but stays blank. :(

It was an idea. I have XP SP3 and that has worked to solve other similar problems. I'm assuming you didn't have Icon Packager installed at the time you created the new user account?

I hadn't uninstalled Icon Packager - I was worried I would lose my few remaining icons if I did. I'll have to get used to blank icons I suppose, until something gets fixed. Knock on wood.

I was able to get most of my icons back, but not all of them.
I hope that you have better luck then I had!

Just because . . on the settings tab everyone has done the repair options in the lower left, right?

You need to download Stardock Central, install Iconpackager through SDC then uninstall it and reboot your computer. I've had this issue for quite some time with Impulse uninstalling Iconpackager incorrectly.

If so is the case, they need to fix the removed by Impulse.

The problem is related to a laptop I borrowed from work. And I really need to fix this.

Most people would uninstall via Windows' Programs and Features, which should work ok I think... not sure.

Are we going to get an update from the dev's at all about these missing icon problems?

I managed to get all of my icons back again, by first uninstalling IconPackager using Stardock Central (not Impulse) and then going through the registry and manually removing every instance of the word iconpackager. I had restarted Vista after uninstalling the program but there were still a lot of references to it in the registry. I still had no icons after restarting again, so I reinstalled IconPackager 4 using Stardock Central and chose the windows default package and every blank icon changed to the proper one! :) I am tempted to try another package, but might wait a few days.

Thank you to everybody for their suggestions. Alix

I am glad it worked for someone else too!  I uninstalled Impulse myself.  Things were working fine until then...

I too have this problem.  It is just completely amazing.  I don't have a restore point I can go to and I don't have the time to do a reinstall of Vista.  I guess I can try the Stardock Central method.  I don't really care for Impulse, anyway; that is assuming I can even get it to load.

Yeah, I guess I'm joining the party too.

I have a computer (Windows XP Service Pack 3) with IP installed (version 2.5 I think). After rebuilding the cache and repairing the icon images, I uninstalled IP so I can install an newer version of IP. All of my icons were fine after the installation.

However, when I installed a newer version of IP, (version 4.1), ALL of my icons changed into blank ones. When I tried applying a package, only the basic Windows icons changed (ie. folder icons), everything else remained blank INCLUDING: my Office 2007 icons, all installed programs' icons, EVERYTHING basically.

From here, I tried repairing the icon images and rebuilding the cache, and nothing happened. Then I uninstalled IP again and NOTHING HAPPENED AGAIN! So basically I have a computer whose icons can't be seen except for the folders, thus making navigation on my computer VERY difficult.

Finally, after doing a system restore (by using Windows' system restore tool to go back to an earlier time), my icons returned to normal, but with the old IP installed on it.

Is there anyway I can upgrade my IP program without destroying my icons??

Thanks for any help you guys can provide! ^_^

I had this problem after removing IP on Vista using Impulse

went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex

Deleted the whole IconHandler key

Either kill explorer.exe or restart.

Boom, fixed.

For problems like this I recomend trying  Analog's suggestion. This is also a small program for removing the software from your system. Once you uninstall the IconPackager you will need to reinstall through Impulse. Make sure that you restart your machine afrer the uninstall and BEFORE you run the software again.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have taken the liberty and time out of my day to provide a detailed walk through on how to retrieve your long-lost icons. Many of you (by the hundreds) are suffering of the painful annoyance that comes with uninstalling IconPackager.

Issue: When uninstalling IconPackager all or the majority of my icons go/are blank. See figure 1

Solution: Download and run the fix provided by Stardock Corp.

[Figure 1]

Solution Explained:

  1. Since you have already un-installed IconPackager, you must re-install it. Simply grab the free trial from CNET (http://www.download.com/IconPackager/3000-2195_4-10031210.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10893658)
  2. Once IconPackager is installed, download the fix provided by Stardock and save to your desktop (http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/odnt_zapper.exe).
  3. Go to your desktop and run the "odnt_zapper.exe" file just downloaded. Refer to [Figure 2]

[Figure 2]

  1. Check the small box next to "IconPackager" and click "Apply". Refer to [Figure 3]

[Figure 3]

  1. You will be prompted with 2 warnings. The first will be a "cleanup" warning asking if you are sure you want to delete everything [Figure 4]. Select [YES] and ignore it. After you select yes, you will receive an error saying you must re-install. Ignore this error and select [OK].

[Figure 4]

  1. Click on [OK] and exit the program.
  2. By now, your icons should have all came back to normal. Not only are your icons back to normal, but your IconPackager is now officially uninstalled.

I hope my fix was helpful and you are able to utilize it.

//Edit//

I am simply going to chime in with this other fix. If the above fix does not work (which it should), another way to retrieve your icons back is by manually resetting them. This may be a tedious task, however it is still quicker and more effective then reformatting/system restore.

To do this follow these simply steps:

  1. Right click on the icon that is not displaying properly.
  2. Select "properties"
  3. Select "change icon"
  4. Click on "OK"
  5. Click on "Apply"
  6. Click on "OK"

You may think I missed a step and failed to desribe what you do when you are in the 'change icon' menu, however I did not. By default the icon will be there and already selected, therefor there is no need to select or change aynthing.
