Help... Start Menu Problem Skin Studio 6

What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to put together the start menu for my next WB, and I noticed this ugly black border all around my start menu (seen on the righthand side of the start menu in the screenshot).

I have blur enabled and disabled the OS shadow.  I am using Skin Studio 6.00.003 and WB 6.09[g].[b].135.  (Also, I have tried this in the latest non-beta version of WB6 and this black border is still there.)

I have tried playing with many of the settings in Skin Studio 6, but I cannot get rid of that annoying border.  What am I doing wrong?

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated! :)

when you do reach a solution for this........dont forget to come back and tell us.....im very curious now for the solution......its become a very odd problem!!!

I posted this in the SkinStudio 6 Beta Feedback thread since I saw that one first.

Go to your skin folder and open up XPStuff.xp with notepad.
Look for the following section and make sure it says "=1" after HideShadows.

[StartPanel]
HideShadows=1

If its not there just add it.

(I tried to change the setting it in SS6 and it did not work for me. )
I hope that helps.

jekyll: If I ever find a solution, I will certainly post it back here. I wouldn't want anyone to be frustrated regarding this problem. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure it out. Also, Cavan looked at my WB and for some reason, SKS6 is recognizing my WB as being a UIS1 type of skin and not a UIS2 skin. I don't understand why this should be as I started my WB SKS6 as an "advanced WB," just like my first WB that I made last month.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I still haven't figured out how to fix this problem. Also tried to start a brand new WB and import my pngs into the new WB. But the ugly shadow remains! X-( I will keep at it and post here if I find an answer to this mysterious problem. Thanks again for all your help. :)

canmandeco: Thanks for your suggestion. I tried this and it did not work. I posted this problem in the SKS6 feedback forum hoping that maybe a Stardock programmer might see it and might have a "technical" (e.g., a SKS6 bug) reason as to why I cannot get rid of the default OS shadow around the Start Panel. Anyway, thank you to you too for stopping by to help. Much appreciated! :)

alphabyte,

I had an issue with one of my skins being seen as a UIS1 skin by SKS5. Here's what I did to correct it (not sure if it will fix your issue but it may be worth a try)

In SKS6,clean the skin (Tools/Clean Skin), then make a WBA package (File/Make WBA Package), switch to a different skin in WBconfig, then delete your problem skin in WBconfig, then find the WBA package that was created earlier and doubleclick it.

This will put your skin back into WBconfig; change to that skin and then try the settings as noted above to turn off the shadow.

I had put in a support ticket for the above problem, but was told SKS5 wouldn't be developed any longer (although it was SKS6 that apparently changed my skin to a UIS1) so there was never any investigation into why SKS6 'made' my skin into a UIS1.

There is no good reason to start an XP skin in SKS6.

I know its work but try STARTING the skin in SKS5.(either from scratch or from another skin that already works right)

pictoratus: Thanks for this suggestion. I will try it out and post later tonight what happens in my case. Thanks again for all your help! :)

IR: I will try your suggestion as well. I will post later tonight what happens with this approach. I don't mind the extra work, especially since this will give me more practice with Skin Studio in general (and I certainly could use the practice). Thanks for all your help as well. Much appreciated! :)

pictoratus: Thank you for the suggestion. I tried your suggestion exactly as you said and unfortunately, it did not work for me. The ugly default OS shadow around the Start Panel remains and my WB is still being recognized by SKS5 as a UIS1 skin. I truly appreciate your time and effort trying to help me solve this problem. Very appreciated! :)

IR: Thank you for your suggestion. As you can see from the screenshot below, it worked! :) I guess Skin Studio 5 is the better way to go when starting a WB. Thank you again for all your help and for taking time out for a newbie like me. :) Your assistance was very appreciated! :)

You're welcome. :)

It's too bad Support hasn't addressed this issue in SKS6. I have a feeling it will continue to be an problem. (:(

Glad to see you were able to find a work around. Yet another reason to continue to use SKS5. ;)

It was nice reading how everyone was willing to help out - Priceless!

I'm sure many other people will benefit from the help provided in this thread.

It is sadden me that Robbie_Boy did not find it worthy to share how he/she managed to solve his/her problem. Take it to the grave :) Not right!

Beside that I'm very pleased :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

This is an old thread but some may come up against this problem - i know i did for a few annoying hours

This solution may not help everyone but ill give it anyway

I solved it by making a new substyle in the blind based on my xp substyle that already existed (which didnt have the annoying line shadow)   I then simply reinported the vista graphics onto the new substyle and copied and pasted the code over and its all perfect again

Delete the old main style and make the new vista substyle the main style

You may need to already have a working substyle for this to work but it may help some

Everyone is correct but here is the problem sks 5 &6 both make back up files

So disable the feature in 6 HideShadows=0

save and apply

Now go to the windowblinds folder for this skin open the folder (set veiw to thumbnails)you will find a file called XPStuff.xp(it will have a skinstudio icon)

this is your good file

now you will find another file XPStuff.xp~ (it will look just like a normal file folder the squiggley line denotes a copy)

now delete the XPStuff.xp~

now open in SKS5 and enable(HideShadows=1)

save and apply

it will be gone ,open in SKS6 and continue building

Note when you start a skin if you start in 5 make this your first change save and apply then open in 6 you wont have this problem again!

It can be done in note pad but I recomend this way unless you are comfortale directly editing code!

Note there could be more than 1 backup of this file if so delete all XPStuff.xp~ (it will look just like a normal file folder the squiggley line denotes a copy)

you only need the 1 with the SKS icon w/o the squiggley line

This will work I am sure !

Avman this seems quite a thorough fix to the problem - though i havent tested it as mine works now - Is Skin studio 5 still easy enough to find?

Is there a sticky for all these weird little problems and their solutions?
