'Pirates of the Burning Sea' hit by rogue wave

Seven servers closed just months after the title's release

Wired.com is reporting that Pirates of the Burning Sea has shuttered seven of their servers, just three months after the title launched. The closure will see only four servers remaining online as Flying Lab Software tries to consolidate the playerbase.

"Through feedback from our players and evaluation of our server populations, it has become clear that key game features require populations of higher density in order to function at optimum levels," said developer Flying Lab Software.

"When you take into account both the disparity in player time zones and the delayed launch of our title in some countries, we were spreading our overall population too thin."

Players who were living out their scurvy-filled dreams on the soon to be dried up servers will be able to transfer their accounts to one of the remaining four servers. Closure of such a large portion of the original servers can only point to one thing, the game didn't reach the potential that the developers projected. Fans of the MMORPG should be worried, as closure of the entire game may not be far off.

Probably so and this is common amongst those developers who are working on MMOGs.  This industry is focusing too much on MMOGs and is still heading for a trainwreck.  The market simply cannot support them all.
