Alpha Centauri

Hi, umm, just wondering if anyone has played Alpha Centauri? I bought it in a five-pack for $9.99 and it is my favourite of the pack. It is a Sid Meier, so it is good. Anyone just comment on if you have played it or if you have actually found its expansion.

I actually have the expansion. I had to order it off of Amazon.com. The thing is really hard to find. The expansion just seems to add more variety to the game.

But yes, awesome game.

P.S. freakin worms...

ya know what *i* remember?

the civ II was 40 megs, and did not have to be installed - or even need the cd to run.

i burned a copy of the civ2 folder onto a CD and played wherever i had happened to be :)

Well worth the purchase imo. It was/is a great game. It is in my top ten games of all time. It has many things I could on about but what I remember the most were the incredible voice effects when you had researched a new topic. Incredible sound work all 'round. The best ever.

Yes...Alpha Centari is one of the best turn based strategy games of all time. It sucks that Firaxis dropped the ip when Activision let them start making Civilization games again. My favorite was playing with the original factions with the Alien Crossfire tech tree.

I loved the game, especially nerve-stapling the populace.

I checked and the expansion is around $100 on ebay. The site for Alpha centauri is still running.

wow, $124.95 each and only 3 copies.

Best pc strategy game of all time hands down. You can build psionic paratroopers. you can terraform terrain to change the weather patterns turning your opponants farmland into desert. So many ways to play it really deserves a sequel more than any other game.

great game. awesome game.

QFT +++ I really wish Fraxis would do a follow up to it.

Wow I'm shocked copies are going for that much on ebay. I should sell mine since I have not played it some time. Does someone want to make me an offer? Mine have only seen a disk drive once for the ISO conversion and that is it.

The greates "Civ" style game ever made. Customizable units, a landscape you could alter, interesting techs, great story, great strategies (although helicopters are pretty OP'd early on).

So many things I loved doing in that game. I loved playing gaian and capturing hordes of mind worms, I loved death spheres, I loved planet busting everyone who wasn't in my voting block, I loved drop-pod troops, psi units, the tech tree, forcing people to like me through violence, nabbing the monsoon jungle or sunny platuea or crater, colonizing the sea (especially as the pirates in the expansion,) and on, and on, and on.

It's so sad that there will probably never be a sequel to it.

Maybe someone will make a mod for Civ IV...

I would actually like to see a sequence of novels based off of that story, which was actually very profound and interesting (for those who do not know: Earth was lost to us (I forget how) and a large number of people escaped aboard two((?)) spaceships, one of which arrived in the Alpha Centauri system and landed on a planet inhabited by "PsiWorms"...factions arose, people rebuilt, etc, etc)

Alpha Centauri is really one of the best, if not THE best 4X games ever released. Little do people know that Brian Reynolds (the guy who created the unrecognized Rise of Legends, which was awesome in its own right) was the real mind behind Alpha Centauri. Sid Meier mainly put his name on the cover in order to augment sales.

Too bad Brian Reynolds really doesn't get the recognition he rightfuly deserves. The guy is a true genius.

I'd rather he have no recognition and the IP rights to the franchise then recognition and no IP rights. Sadly he has NEITHER so it's a real shame but what can you do...

Ah, brings back memories. I loved Alpha Centauri, had the expansion too. It hooked me more than the core Civ games too, at least in terms of holding my interest. So it's a little depressing that I haven't been able to find the CD(s) for the main game for at least several years now. :SNIFF!:

I <3 Alpha Centauri. :D I regularly play it every few months.

Infantry + Air drop pods + Space Elevator + High Morale = FTMFW!

I usually end up winning through Asencion but if the AI pisses me off enough, i'll just methodically go and capture all their capital cities then slowly obliterate the rest of their cities one by one. Economic sanctions don't mean a thing when everyone has a vendetta against you. ;)

The incredible amounts of worms at the end of a game are pretty annoying. I end up turning on "fast move" and "fast battle resolution" so i wouldn't have to wait so long.
