Allow dropped players to rejoin online multiplayer games

I've probably mentioned this before, but one thing that would improve the online multiplayer aspects of this game would be to allow players who have dropped to reconnect and rejoin a game that they've dropped (perhaps because of a mini-dump or a computer crash, etc.).  Might it be possible for the game to remember the IP it's connected to and to allow players to rejoin and regain control of their empire?

I've just played a number of games where someone ends up crashing, messing it all up.

happens to me quite a bit during online play. Losing players during a fairly long game gets old real quick.

There are some fairly signifigant technical issues with that -- not the least that you have to transfer a save game to the reconnecting computer, it isn't going toj ust magically "know" where everything is. So you have a few minutes with the game paused, and maybe the right person gets back in... or you just use an autosave and reload (or save and e-mail the file)

as i recall frogboy mentioned some features some time ago that he would like to see, and he said that he would like to see where you could rejoin an ongoing game.

But to the sound of it, it might not happen before an expansion as it seems really complicated for just a patch... :NOTSURE:

That would be an awesome feature, but considering there are generally far fewer online features in this game than most, I wouldn't hold your breath for this super-advanced feature. It'll never happen. Maybe Starcraft III will do it?

I extremely doubt any starcraft or fast rts game will do that. Why waste the resources for something that lasts less than an hour?

I agree - it'll be a fantastic technical achievement if this happened in a patch or an expansion. I've been dropped from a few multiplayer online games because of lag or crashes, and it's VERY annoying. Especially if you're an hour+ into the game.

However, what I'd like to see as a feature, more than the ability to join back, is the ability to assign a dropped/diconnected player's resources and ships to another teammate. That way, if someone in a team game drops out, his/her teammates can take over and augment thier fleets and resources

I realise sins is a whole differant situation but in city of heroes if a player got DCed in a task force they could rejoin when the re logged. Total differeant networking setup though but Im sure there is perhaps a way where it can be achieved in sins. Just thinking about it though I can see it would be difficult, would need to have some method of rentry into the game plus some reliable way of logging a players state at the time of DC.

ALthough it would involve alot of work and be tricky to immplement I still think its a great idea.

I wonder, couldn't Sins be set up to maintain some sort of a log file of where (host's IP, etc.) someone was playing at before they disconnected and then try to reconnect to the dropped game at a player's request?

this is A great idea, but how about letting anyone join a game in progress if there is an AI player(They do that in Civilization 4). That way if someone has to leave, someone else can take their place.

Either way, I would love to see a feature like this in Sins.

This has been requested for about half a year (since beta days). If it was easy to make it, I'm pretty sure it would be done already. I'm all for it though; disconnects and crashes are the foremost problem with this game, and an ability to resync with the rest of the players when you've got sorted whatever problem you got, would really help with that.
