Hit the W key. Now I can't get control of the ship.

The W key is not documented in the users manual. It throws the ship into Sector Sweep mode. I hit it by accident an now can't figure out how to get it out of Sector Sweep mode.

What other undocumented keys are there?

You can change ship orders by clicking the little "i" button on the bottom of the screen or double clicking the ship.

I wish the "W" key would be bound to "wait" and allow ship orders to be delayed past the auto-pilot phase or something...

Err... the "i" button is only there after you've selected that ship of course...

Yeah, I havs some muscle memory from Empire, where W is Wait. I guess the equivalent is to click Find, but I wish there were a keystroke.

More specifically, no "wait" command that will delay ship orders past the auto-pilot phase.

I have problems getting ships out of sentry/guard/wait. I have to send them on auto-pilot to break the mode. This is with .057.

The "i" button definitely works - though you do have to select the ship, as Za_H pointed out, and sometimes in the process of selecting the ship you make it execute its auto-pilot move... grr, indeed. However, once selected, however you get there, you can turn on or off those modes by clicking the "i" button.

When you select a stack of ships, only the first unit on top is affected. In other words, if you were trying to cancel sentry/guard/auto-pilot, you can only cancel the order for the first unit in a stack. The easiest work around for this problem is to fleet and un-fleet the stack quickly I think.

Feargus:

You may or may not trigger auto-pilot depending on how you select the ship.

- Using the F3 ship list to select ships will activate auto-pilot
- Selecting a ship in the stack through the ship list on the lower right side of the screen will activate auto-pilot

Avoid these two situations and you should be fine.

doctorstik: so left-clicking them doesn't take them out of guard/sentry?

CariElf, yeah that's the problem (typically when having placed a ship to guard a starbase). Left clicking on the guarding ship doesn't remove the guard mode as the starbase is first in stack.

The W key is a major problem for long-time Civ3 players (like me) who find it difficult getting used to the switch from from W to tab. The tab key does make sense, but it just isn't the norm in these types of games I think.

I have a lot of reloads due to accidentally hitting W when I meant to hit tab.

Click on it in the stacked ship list and then left click on the ship to cancel it's guard or sentry

CariElf: Nope. I also tried "toggling" their orders by going under the "i" screen for the ship. Recent experience involves stacked ships on a starbase (just this night).

CariElf:

If you select a stack of ships in guard mode, you will be given command of the first ship on top of the stack. Attempting to select any other ship in the same stack through the ship list on the lower right hand corner will simply result in the first ship being selected again.

If the units in a stack were in auto-pilot mode instead of guard/sentry, selecting any but the first ship on top of the stack will result in these ships executing their auto-pilot orders.

Fleeting and un-fleeting ships is the only reliable method to cancel pre-existing orders. Very frustrating at times.

Hmm...I thought for sure that it would work. It looks like our mouse hit detection code is stupider than I thought. :)

I think that I will add this to my bug list under the heading of mouse hit detection rather than as a guard/sentry bug because there are probably other instances of this sort of behavior.

In the meantime, I was able to get around it by right clicking in the same tile as the ship (I usually play with the grid on so it's not a problem for me to tell where the tiles are.)

Space basically skips the selected ship's turn, if that helps. Is there a hot key for auto attack?

CariElf:

The guard/sentry and all other automated commands also need to preserve a unit's movement points until the end of a turn instead of depleting them instantly. If a player puts a ship into sentry mode, all movement points are instantly removed, which can make an accidental keystroke fatal. By preserving movement points, you can also allow the guard/sentry to act as a passable "wait" command so players can delay ship orders past the auto-pilot phase. Please consider this improvement to the exiting automated commands. Thanks!

Somehow I still didn't get the command sequence to 'fleet' a number of ships. Can someone please spell it out?

Also, no one has answered the question, "Are there any other UNDOCUMENTED KEYS ??"

The 'W' key is undocumented.

There's a complete list of hotkeys in "gc_quickguide.html" in your GalCiv directory. Listed there, and in the user manual that came with the game, are the fleet (F) and un-fleet (U) commands. The same functions can also be activating by clicking on the fleet and un-fleet buttons to the right of any ship list.

Move ships onto the same tile. Hit F or the green button to the right of the stacked ship list. They now move as a feet.
