sooo...I've decided generally not to participate in any of these lil councils/senates/federations/alliances et al. for many reasons; they don't really do anything for me to enhance my game, but if other people find them fun, so be it.

that being said...the GalCiv forums have mostly been known to be friendly, inviting, and above the trolling (generally, we've definitely have had our share too...I can think of one particularly lovely individual that just loved nitpicking Frogboy).

Now I am not defending the actions of an individual that posted, again, that he's leaving these forums; we all make conscious decisions about our words and actions, but there are people in these council/senate threads that I am...disappointed in...that should know better.

A Troll is someone that thrives on the attention of others; whether its to get a rise out of them by inflaming them OR a person that loves to whine as loudly as possible when things don't get the way they think they should.

In either case, its not the Troll but those that respond that be responsible for the future actions of that person. Only way to deal with a troll is to ignore them, not stoop to their level.

Now, I am not trying to paint this individual solely as a troll...they were young and immature, and threads like "They Dissed Us, Let's Diss Them!" don't follow the 'culture' that we have established here on the GalCiv forums but the angst of teenagers today who are used to the taunting and mean-spirited attacks common in MMORPGs and the such, really isn't so surprising.

I think that its important, and especially certain veteran players in particular, that we kindly, but firmly, let new or younger or even veteran players that decide to troll/spam/"get uppity", that kind of behavior is immature and inappropriate. Also, we need to remember ourselves not to be immature either. A joke is one thing, but over two week's worth of joking on the same person/empire over a multitude of threads gets old to read over and over again.

And about SP quitting the forums again! I must say that I was kinda surprised. Maybe I was missing all the posts, but I didn't see alot of taunting pointed at him (except maybe for one individual, but it looked like a two way street to me). What I thought was odd was that he told Neilo to shut his mouth and I can't recall Neilo directing anything specifically at him. Oh well, maybe I'm wrong and the entire world was against him. Either way the choice is his to do as he pleases. I personally was glad to see him return the first time and to see him apologize for taking things to serious. Maybe he will return again, but hopefully he will concentrate more on his games and let the make believe stories written in the forums stay just that - stories that don't ACTUALLY mean anything.

Well we did put "Geckos are delicious" as one our main agenda points, but I didn't even think that it was offensive. Actually I didn't even know whats going on, because for a while I thought most people did like Seth, but I guess that was wrong.

Still trolling has been minimal in this community, but I believe that one such things happen it is best to take a morel light hearted stance on the issue and just move on.

I wouldn't go so far as to call SethPenguin a troll. A tad unstable perhaps, but not as bad a a troll. At one point, it looked like he was successful in disconnecting himself from his avatar. I, for one, was hopeful that he was becoming one with the community. I suppose looks can be deceiving.

His decision to leave amounts to exactly zero loss. Flaming DSep on his way out was in incredibly poor taste and essentially burned what was left of the bridge that survived his first departure. DSep didn't deserve that kind of treatment. I won't be rolling a welcome mat out again if the lizard dude shows back up.

Still, you're right Silver. There are the rare few who play victim, make wild accusations and try to play us against each other. I'll try to ignore the bait, irritating as it is.

I lose no sleep to seth's departure. Everything was in fun and he got no more than he dished out. Geez, if the amount of taunting he recieved was excessive...then KP would have left the forums long ago. I don't think anyone receives as much shit from "us" as the Kzinti do.....

As for his remarks of a more personal nature, i can't ban him from this site, but i had my own litte immature victory, i banned him from the ToE site.

I can't belive this thread escaped me until now. Ohh all the quips i missed out on saying. Still, got some good laughs (especially with Motti changing votes and telling everyone to do the same). But i did manage to pass an hour at work and I learned what a troll is. My kids will be proud of me.

So how many votes have there been? I'd like to go back and place my votes in each one.

Sorry your council or senate or whatever didn't grow like you wanted DSEP, but i think this thread you started did a lot more that just solve some little Galactic issues.

Well put Silverbeacher. The maturity level on the "real" threads on this forum are what i like about this community. Anyone who asks a serious question gets a serious answer. Seldomly if ever is there any kind of hostility. But on the less serious threads it is great to see some of the more funnier comments.

It is sad and unfortunate that the younger guys who are growing up with the internet have learned to use their anonomitity to flame and harrass. You don't really see it here too much but as Silverbeacher said, its out there. I hope we can set the tone so it doesn't grow in here.

Very true! MV threads are immature but they're definately not serious and of course are going to have a lot of taunting. Nonetheless, people should be able to deal with it because as we've been saying all along (besides sethpenguin) everything said on these threads is "in character" and none of it's personal! Sethpenguin got pissed because in the little story i was writing, i wrote "hated geckodon empire!" what's up with that?
I always feel bad when people take offense at my posts, but like i say "Sarcasm is my first language!" people really need to learn to live with it on the MV. Look at how much Kzintzi receives, does he start ranting about how everyone else should be banned??

Look at my other posts....anything not in the MV section, not a single taunt or anything like that (besides sethpenguin's "they dissed us thread")but some people must always be childish.

That is because someone or some group, or the collective whole, always steps to take charge. Anarchy has been tied culturally with chaos, but in its most basic form it is the Ultimate Liberation, that is complete freedom. It doesn't necessarily have to be "evil", but the nature of Man unfortunately skews it heavily in that direction.

Actually many opponents of Democracy, especially on a large scale (ie early American Republicanism) feared Democracy as a form of controlled Anarchy that could too easily fall into chaos. In its truest form, Democracy IS Anarchy; just anarchy within a certain set of codes (that is everyone has a voice- "freedom", but the majority voice wins)
