Michael Moore's Illegal Influence

"Mainstream Democrat" Moore uses illegal tactics to try to win votes for Kerry

Lansing, MI - Today the Michigan Republican Party filed a request for an Issuance of Criminal Complaint against Hollywood filmmaker Michael Moore for his illegal attempts to influence the November election in Michigan.

"Higher turnout in elections is beneficial for everyone and is a goal we share with `mainstream Democrats' like Michael Moore," said Executive Director Greg McNeilly. "But nobody is above the law. Mr. Moore's illegal actions, in an attempt to influence this election, cannot be ignored."

During his self-named "Slacker Uprising Tour" in Michigan, Mr. Moore offered incentives for those who registered to vote or who promised him that they would vote. Section 931(1)(b) of the Michigan Election Code (Michigan Compiled Laws ("MCL") 168.931(1)(b)) provides that a person who performs such an act is guilty of a misdemeanor:

"(b) A person shall not, either before, on, or after an election, for the person's own benefit or on behalf of any other person, receive, agree, or contract for valuable consideration for 1 or more of the following:

(i) Voting or agreeing to vote, or inducing or attempting to induce another to vote, at an election.

Mr. Moore's offers to clean a dorm room, provide a year's supply of Tostitos, provide a clean package of underwear or a package of Ramen noodles all are included in the definition of term `Valuable consideration' under Section 931.

"We want everyone to participate in this year's election, but not because they were bribed or coerced by the likes of Michael Moore," continued McNeilly. "We hope that Mr. Moore will be respectful of the laws of this state if he chooses to return."

A copy of the letter sent by McNeilly to Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings, III is attached. Similar letters were sent to the Prosecutors of Antrim, Isabella and Wayne counties.

That probably got on the books to prevent somebody like 'Boss' Tweed arrising to power again.

Coming to a rally is one thing. What he's doing is something TOTALLY different! He's telling them you vote for Kerry and I'll give you "X". THAT is against the law!

NO. He's saying if you vote then ill give you X. He doesn't care who you vote for. Well, I mean he does want you to vote for Kerry, but its if you vote for ANYONE you get X

"Mainstream Democrat" Moore

Whoever said this should read Mr. Moore's books. Mike isn't a "mainstream democrat", he's an unabashed hardcore left wing liberal who votes Green party.

After rereading this I must admit you are correct. However that doesn't change the fact that he broke the law.

Congratulations, drmiler, you win a Golden Retraction Award for admitting a mistake. I am not trying to be pissy; I am just trying to mark what is a fairly rare phenomenon on JU. For my money, your credibility has risen. I also agree with you that, in his efforts to get students to vote, Moore clearly appears to be guilty of a misdemeanor under Michigan law. Even a "mainstream" (yeah right!) Democrat (?) can make a mistake, but the law is the law.

Oh I am not arguing that he didn't break the law, I'm not sure of the law, even in my homestate of MI, but I think its a not very good law.

Oh and good job admiting the mistake, I wish more of us, myself and bush included, would be willing to do this.

So you want people to bribe people to vote, than I must say 'Boss' Tweed is your man.

Sorry but whoever does the bribing would influence the vote even if he did not intentionally mean too. Those college boys and girls would have voted for Ralph if the bribe went through, which I did like Ralph's bumper sticker in 2000 (Bush and Gore make me want to Ralph ).

Also are you sure Mikey didn't say 'if you vote, don't vote Bush!', oh well.

Unless it is done by a non-partisan (no leaners either) organization who just gives stuff out for people to vote (or like Votergasm) than NO influence would be put into who that person votes for. C'est La Vie

Law is a Law, a rule is rule.
We don't need more 'Boss' Tweeds running around here again.

I wonder if people would be offended if Bush gave $100 to people if they promised to vote.
