Ability to schedule indexing?

The fast search tool is nice in Vista, but the indexing required is annoying. Does TweakVista include the ability to schedule indexing? This is something that Microsoft neglected to add.

Is the CrawlStartPages task related to indexing? I'm a bit afraid to modify it because I'm unsure of what it does. It does appear, though, to be related. Unfortunately, the action is "Custom Handler" which tells me nothing.

It would be nice if somebody did some in-depth research and figured out how Vista decides when to start indexing files, and hopefully find a way to schedule it.

Hi Marcus,

Sorry no.  You can disable the Index, but then it will not run again
until you enable it again.

You can Rebuild the Index during the times you want to help it not run
as much when you do not want to have it run.  However, it will still
always run in the background updating itself with the changes you made
to the included indexed locations during slow or idle times.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Sure.  You'd need to schedule two tasks using Task Scheduler to do this, one
to stop the indexing service and one to start it.  The NET START and NET
STOP commands will start and stop, respectively, any named service.  Use the
Help and Support tool in Vista for more details.

Thanks. That's something I can work with. However, it still remains that something in Vista will automatically start the service at inconvenient times. Do we know if CrawlStartPages is related to starting the indexing service when the computer is idle?

How does Vista detect when the computer is "idle" anyways?
