World of Warcraft: Is it worth it?

Fun game? Or just an addictive monster?

I know World of Warcraft (also WOW) is the biggest MMO out there. 10 Million people are playing. (Is it 10 or 9?)

For those of you who don't know, WOW is an MMO by Blizzard (the creator of the obsessive Starcraft). It has middle-ages feel to it, with the standard quests, swords, levels, and the like. But now, this game has gotten some serious controversy.

First of all, this game is plain addictive. I do not mean that in a good way. People will simply play this game for days on end. In fact, some people have died playing this game. They simply stop eating, drinking, peeing, sleeping, and doing the other important activities to keep you alive. One more obvious thing: The game isn't even any fun. Its like any other MMO. Why get addicted to something that is no fun. You'll destroy your life. The effect will also take its toll on your credit card with subscription fees.

The game has caused crime. In China, one player loaned a firend a valuble item. The friend then sold it on Ebay for $1000. After that, the original guy got so mad, he stabbed his friend throught chest, killing him. Also, WOW players' friends (if they have any friends) have been kidnapped by other WOW players, and demand their items. This is serious shit, guys.

One more thing. Dell as recommended WOW as an accessory for their PCs. A voice in the back of my head has been telling me that Blizzard has been doing some bribery. One more thing is extremely obvious. Blizzard hold conventions to simply glorify themselves over other devs, and to promote WOW and Warcraft (and Starcraft 2). This is ridiculous. Blizzard would be nothing if it wasn't for the fan-boy gushings of PC Gamer and other magazines. Those idiots don't know what they are talking about.

So, if you don't have WOW, don't get. If you do, play something fun, like Dark Avatar (woot!). Guys, this is just my opinion, so don't scream at me.

Give me your feed back!

Some people are predisposed to addictions of any sort--if you're one of these people, it's your responsibility to avoid things that you may become addicted to. It's not something unique to MMOGs, nor does it reflect poorly on them. I've let my subscription lapse without a second thought a number of times when I knew I'd be spending my time on other stuff (for example, last month for the Sins release).

If that was supposed to have happened with WoW, it's nonsense. All non-basic items in WoW will permanently bind to someone upon use--meaning they can't be returned or resold once you put them on your character. So even if someone did lend an item, they couldn't possibly ever expect it back.

One more thing. Dell as recommended WOW as an accessory for their PCs. A voice in the back of my head has been telling me that Blizzard has been doing some bribery.

I'd be amazed if Dell didn't get kickbacks from Blizzard for doing that. Sales and Marketing 101.

Ok, I was addicted to WOW. Then, suddenly, I became absoultely sick of it. I mean WOW really is boring. The game is just one giant grind fest. When I started playing it in late September of 2007, I countinously played it. It was the only thing I did in my spare time. In 5 months, I had logged 30 days played on a single character. 30 days. Basically in 5 months, I spent 20% of my total time playing WOW. This is while having a 9-10 hour a day job, so guess what I did during all my free time. I gained nearly 20 pounds in that time as well. Also, I am no closer to lossing my virginity now as a result, for sure.

However, I magically became sick of the game. The game really is stupid because it is really boring once you realize why you are grinding away. I was a Paladin, so maybe thats why the game got boring. Anyway, I got hooked by really trying to grind hard to get my first mount. Then once I got my warhorse, I got bored again. Then it was grinding for the charger. Then once I got my charger, that became normal and boring. Now, I am level 70 with a regular flying mount, but it dawned on me: I was about to slave away for months to get 5200 Gold for what? So I could fly around fast in wow? If I wanted to fly around fast, I could just buy a flight simulator and still have time to get laid.

Yeah, I hate WOW. Besides, eventually it gets to a point where you sign in and get tonns of tells from noobs begging you to run instances, give them gold, etc. Screw that.

I personally have had only good experiences with World of Warcraft. I played it for a couple of years. I may be bored with it now but it was certainly worth the money spent. I found it to be an enjoyable game and a definite jewel of a MMORPG.

I got a free 10 hour trial of WoW. Played it for about two before realizing that yes, that was all there was. I don't understand the appeal of the game, it's ridiculously dull. The entire game is designed to waste as much of your time as possible, as best I can tell.

I tried Guild Wars, and it was fun at first, but I eventually discovered it was a grind-fest against uninspired monsters in canned enviornments, (Dinosaur skeletons in catacombs? Lame.) and had really boring quests. The PvP was a lot of fun, but I cancelled my subscription after a few months. On the plus side, it didn't have a monthly fee.

Also, I've heard about a side-scrolling MMO that's free to play. (The name escapes me at the moment.)

Whatever you were playing, it wasn't Guild Wars. First, there are no dinosaur skeletons in GW and, more importantly, there's no subscription system.

The only MMO I've found to be 'fun' has been City of Heroes/Villains. Aside from running out of things to do in the mid to late 30's the game is fun, fast paced, and designed specifically against grinding since even with the 'loot' Invention Origins they are really just gravy over regular SO's. A huge part of the game is the fact that you can design our character in millions of different ways and look cool even at lvl 1 and most costume upgrades are level rather than loot based. They also implemented automatic travel powers rather than the ultra grinding or high cost by buying gold online mount system.

I tried WoW. It was a grindfest, no fun to be had and your characters are generic as hell. The only reason to play that game imo is if you have a big group of friends who also play it a lot (a lot of people do, I don't).

meh, its all pretty accurate. Except that the crime part is completely justified and has nothing to do with WOW.

Think about it for a second. You spend weeks of work aquiring something, it is stolen and sold for thousands of dollars... it is no different then someone stealing your car and selling it, the fact that the chinese government laughes at such complaints motivates people to take into their own hands.

"but its just a game"... so is golf, and if I stole and sold a 6000$ club set I will be put in jail. And if the police LAUGHED at the guy who reported his clubs were stolen, he might also be motivated to take the law into his own hands and stab me.

It is indeed completely and utterly not fun. It is a chore like every other MMO. Grind grind grind to keep your stats up so that you aren't player killed that easily. Waste of time.

Ok first off WOW did not make anyone do anything. 2nd almost anything can become addictive if you let it. Now I know in our brave new world we are no longer responsible for our own actions and that it is always someone or something else’s fault that we do the things we do. But I don't subscribe to this point of view nor do I believe in Political Correctness. Does that make me a rebel or a racist (I'm sure that since I disagree with the concept someone somewhere will try to use the race card even though this has absolutely nothing to do with race. Using the race card is all the rage these days,) maybe I'm a bad evil person for believing that each person is responsible for his own actions if that is the case then so be it.
Now WoW was a fun game until you got to the high levels then it became a grind. So I left it and went to play DDO then LOTR then came back to DDO which I'm now playing until Conan comes out. Am I addicted to these MMO's? the answer is no. I don't play enough to be considered addictive besides if I played too much then it would cut into my GALII play time :)

The game I believe you may be referring to is "Cabal Online".
I never Played WoW, And a friend tried to get me to play Cabal.
But I was completely bored with it, I have never figured out what is so addictive about MMORPG's or fun for that matter.

But I am quite Addicted to Galactic Civilizations II! [And Civilization IV of equal Value]

Played Everquest for two years. Thank god that was in high school, cause I would have dropped out of college if I started playing it in college. I was ADDICTED. So I won't play these games anymore. Now I play games such as GalCiv2 which I can just stop and do more important stuff and come back at another time. When you pay to play something monthly, your mindset kicks in saying that you should at least make it worth your money.

I tried Wow but I didnt like it and on a side note too many little kids in it... But I love Eve Online, Gal Civ 2 and Sins. Now those games are damn near perfect.

EVE is pretty fun. But it is kind off slow paced. I had to do a little bit of "MMO Grinding" before I really got into it. After that it's fun. Sins and Galciv2 are addictive in a good way.

It looks like the majority of people think WOW is crap. Good choice.

Now, if someone threw a bomb into the WOW server room at night...

Addictions come in all shapes and flavors. And to date, I am aware of no Wow-related deaths from overplaying. I know of one from Starcraft, and one from Lineage.

One more obvious thing: The game isn't even any fun. Its like any other MMO.

This is obviously an opinion...plenty of people find it fun. I still find it fun after 3 70s and working on my 4th.

The effect will also take its toll on your credit card with subscription fees.

It's 14.99 a month. Do you go to the movies twice in a month? You've spent more on movies than I do on WoW. Do you have Cable TV? That costs at least twice as much, and if you have all the premium channels it costs 6 times as much as WoW. Perspective, please.

The game has caused crime. In China, one player loaned a firend a valuble item. The friend then sold it on Ebay for $1000. After that, the original guy got so mad, he stabbed his friend throught chest, killing him.

It wasn't WoW, it was Legend of Mir 3. Also within the past 6 months, Ebay has removed the ability to sell virtual items.

Also, WOW players' friends (if they have any friends) have been kidnapped by other WOW players, and demand their items. This is serious shit, guys.

As we say in WoW...Screenshots, or it didn't happen. (in other words, I'd like a link supporting this claim) As Kyro has pointed out, the vast majority of the best items in WoW are inextricably linked to their character and cannot be traded or given away, and ALL items cannot be traded once they are equipped. Well...whites and greys can, but you should be past those by level 10.

In summary, yes these games can be addictive to people with certain personality traits (OCD, Addictive personality) in varying degrees, but that's true of any activity. As a counterpoint to the Doom and Gloom in the original post, I met my wife and my best friend both while playing EQ, and the three of us still play WoW together. I've also met a good group of people who live near my mother, who I see when I go visit her..if I have the time. (mom lives near Stardock-land, and I'm in North Carolina.)

If you like WoW, play it..if you don't....don't. The world won't end either way. Do everything in moderation, being obssessed with anything is bad.

Ya think? Look where he's posting it. He might get a different variety of responses if he posted this on the main WoW forum, maybe?

Oh...I forgot to mention, get into 0.0 space. Tanking 3 Serpentis Lord Admirals != slow paced. Fleet battles with 400 PC ships on each side != slow paced.

I've played WoW since summer 2005, and I'm still actively playing it, though I'm no longer clocking 12+ hours a day on it like I did at the worst when I was still in school. I was pretty much addicted to it I'd say. Like most character building RPGs the basic point is to develop a character of your choosing, through leveling and getting better gear, and as you reach max level you develop solely through gear, reputation and various titles.

As far as MMORPGs go, WoW probably is the most casual friendly MMORPG ever made, but if you're the type that don't like taking your time and slowly developing your characters through the combat mechanics, you're probably not going to like it (even though I say "slowly", it's way faster than in any MMORPGs to come before it). You can actually make appreciable progress in just an hour of playtime until you hit max level and got the basic gear sorted, though the first time through a character will always be slower than the ones that follow it.

The thing that's kept me in the game this long is that I early on met some people that I got along with really well, and over the years I've met a lot of great people that I've gotten to know well and whom I still play with fairly regularly. Naturally, it was a bit special back in the day as the game was really new to most everyone in Europe and the process of exploring and discovering the world that they had made along with my friends was really something special.

As WoW has gotten a lot more mainstream, naturally you see a lot more types of people in the game, and not everyone are the sort of people you'd want to associate with, be it twats, immature kids (and adults), and people who feel they are superior to you for whatever reason.

All in all, if you like the way the game mechanics work it'll probably be worth it, then it's just hoping that you get to know people who you get along and have fun playing with.

Guys, Blizzcon is awful. Its main purpose is to glorify themselves over other developers. As if they weren't snide enough. Like I said before, the main reason people go there is because PC Gamer likes Blizzard games (all of which are over rated) You could take a Crysis player, a Battlefield 2142 junkie, or GalCiv2 player  :), send them to Blizzcon, and they'll come out Warcraft geeks and Starcraft (shudders) losers. It's stupid.

My advice, play games that are actually fun.

Anyone read my wisecrack about an explosive in the WOW server room?

I read the above statement and I laught. Dude it's just a GAME and a GAMING company is going to promote it's product when it can to MAKE MONEY. That goal of any company is to make money. It just cracks me up when people 'Demonize' a gaming company because they hat some aspect of the game or games they put out.
I don't like Sony because the custmer service sucks not because I think they have some diabolical agenda to take over the world. I did not care much for EQ hated that game but I don't demonize it like this guy in the quote is doing about Blizzard. Hey Blizzard has a right to toot thier horn because they have had a lot of sucessful games. I personally don't like RTS games (I'm a Turn Based Stratagy type of guy) so Warcraft and Starcraft were not something I liked but I did find The World of Warcraft to be an enjoyable game until I got to the high levels when the grinding really got bad. I though WOW was a far better game than EQ (I left EQ for WoW.) User interface was one of the best that I have seen in any MMO that I have played to date and I have played a few MMO's.)
I have not played WoW for years now because I no longer found it enjoyable and I have sensed moved on to other games. Currently I'm playing DDO and waiting for Conan Online to come out.

WOW the origional poster is a noob an a idiot. What a chickelittle the sky is falling post. hahahaha Why is it when something is FUN others who don't play it or don't like it call it an Addiction? lol Addiction is something you are if you WANT to be. I used to smoke and I quit cold turkey just like that because I WANTED to. I didn't need any cigarest or patches or any support groups. I smoked for 35 years and just quit on my own because I WANTED to not because it was an ADDICTION. lol Some people are just so stupid and dumb and think everything is an addiction. lol Get lost dude nobody cares if you don't like WOW or Blizzard. And why are you even posting this HERE, this is a GC forum not your soapbox crusade against WOW.

Hi!
I know World of Warcraft (also WOW) is the biggest MMO out there. 10 Million people are playing. (Is it 10 or 9?)

From start of this year there are two less that are playing it. I've been paying subscription fee for about a year and a half for my two children, but then they ralized WoW isn't fun anymore. In all that time I NEVER even tried it. From what I could saw over shoulder of my kids it was just a big grind to get better stats or equipment, and lots or anger when one jerk just quited in the middle of an instance. I had enough of such a "grind" in the middle of the third replay of Fallout 2 some 5 years ago.

The game has caused crime.

You know, in 10 millions people one can find just about any deviant behaviour imaginable. Why should WoW be excluded from that?

this game is plain addictive

This I can't deny. But it is said one can't fool everyone all the time. My two kids aren't fooled anymore. So there's still hope. ;)
