Lost Empire: Immortals - A warning

I give you this as public service for all GalCiv2 fans:

Gamespot has written a very nice preview of a 4X game called Lost Empire: Immortals, which can be read in the following link:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/lostempireimmortals/news.html?page=1&sid=6185088&tag=result;title;0

I have purchased and downloaded it directly from the company's site as the preview makes the game look great and seem like it can compete directly with the likes of GalCiv2.

However:

Be advised - This is an Indie Game.

Everything, from the manual, the graphics, the menus, the bugs "reeks" of unprofessionalism and amateurish design. This is by no means a game that will compete with GalCiv 2 in any way, shape or form. It is most likely not worth your time, money and energy. It has by no means the fraction of the production values of GalCiv2. In fact, I'm quite sure that even the production values of the first GalCiv were higher than this.

However, if you really like Space Empires 4 and 5, the game feels about the same. In fact, it feels identical. For me, this type of games basically feels like an excel spreadsheet with a thin coat of paint on it, and I'm overall very disappointed from the purchase. Be advised and spread the word.

Thanks, I'll have a look. :)

Looks/plays quite nice actually. Huge maps and not so much micromanagement. I'll give it a try.

I'm not going to badmouth anything. I take my words back, I made a mistake. Me=An idiot. Boy, do I feel stupid.

Since the devs have given a great discount on buying the new game for purchasers of the old Lost Empire, I've done so and purchased it as well. I will give my honest impressions later on.

Edit: I cannot edit my first post. I hope there is a way for the devs to either remove this thread altogether or allow me to reedit it :(

Kudos for admitting an honest mistake!

I made the very same one, once. After that, you tend to double check on product names, cover designs and release dates vs. copyright dates on boxes. :D

I'm playing right now the demo and to be honest the game is really underwhelming, or at least doesn't really seem comparable to GC2 in terms of gameplay.
Planet management and empire management is reduced at a minimum, you just don't have the feeling that micromanagement is reduced, instead you have the feeling that all the game is about building and moving fleets.
Even research system that on the forums of LE:I seemed having something special is so bland, with discoveries limited to level 1,2,3.Even GC2 with its uninspired tech tree (not considering TotA)seems a lot better.

The only thing which seems better done than in GC2 is the pieces of history which you can uncover during a game session, and to be honest lack of immersivity in GC2 is for me the weak point of the Stardock game.

LE:I really seems a mediocre game, not worth buying considering TotA is going to be released soon.

Amen to that, brother! Let's begones be bygones (is that the right proverb?).

I tried the demo so far, and I'd have to say I have difficulties mastering the game process. I hope there will soon be a good FAQ/strategy guide, 'cause I got my 2 frigates + 4 Patrol fleet wiped pretty easy by a minor race. I also capped my expension because all the stars are out of reach now :(

After some practive, I managed to crush minor races around my core territories, establishing a mighty empire that always seems more hungry..

Nice game. I hate the turn-limit on the demo, however..

I downloaded the demo and it reminds me more of MoO2 with a little bit of updating. I can see what you are saying about the similarity with SE5 but not being an SE fan I like LE more and while I agree that it is no competition for GalCiv, I find the demo somewhat amusing.

I probably won't buy it but who knows?

I'm trying the demo, so far it seems to be a decent game, if they patch it up enough to fix the problems that are being reported in their forum I just may buy the thing.

Indeed no competition for Galciv2. I tried the demo and liked it, but the research and ship design options are to much micromanagement for me. I like the planetery development aspect of the game.

I bought it and all I can say is it is barely okay for the low price. They did release a patch that helped some of the problems and added a couple of helpful features but it needs more patching to get it where it needs to be. Sadly, it appears that Paradox has dropped it and the devs (Pollux Gamelabs) seem to have left the building.

My barely okay rating is based on single player only and I have never finished a game. I am probably being too kind.

The manual for LE is the worse piece of documentation of any software i have ever seen. it is extremely unclear. Compare with SE 5, oh my god, where do i even begin. SE 5 have like a giant 300 page downloadable manual, everything is explained and over explained. Galciv 2's brief manual is much more clear compare with LE's manual. And there is nothing exciting about any aspect of the game, it felt so slow the first 100 turns. Compare with Galciv 2 or SE 5.

The worst part currently is that the developers are not posting ANY kind of info on the forums and seem to have stopped development of any future patches. At least that's what it looks like. Could by that they are frustrated by the fact that gamers are actually finding issues with the game, but that is no way to build trust and a fanbase.

The initial German release also had problems that were simply inaccaptable: Text that wrapped too far and was mixed with other text, making both unreadable; 'inhabitable' translated as 'uninhabitable'...

It seems like the developers are having financial difficulties (from the LE:I forums), and that's the reason for the held up support, guess they bit off more than they could swallow. Paradox seems eager to fix the situation in collaboration with Pollux, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's a pity really, this game could have been pretty darn enjoyable with some polish, reminds me a bit of the old classic Stars! coupled with simplified Dominions 3 battles.

there is an announcement by the devs.

" Dear gamer,

Due to financial constraints, all production at Pollux Gamelabs has
currently been halted. At present we do not know what exact implications
this will have for future support of Lost Empire: Immortals.

The support mail is being read but at the moment we cannot guarantee a 100%
response rate nor response time.

The best place to start in case of a problem is reading the stickies at the
Technical Support forum:

The most common problem is a missing prerequisite, which cause an error in
the installer detection. The following requirements are needed to run Lost
Empire - Immortals, and can be found in the "prerequisites" folder of the
installer/cd-rom.

DirectX
DirectX
NET20
VCREDIST
XNA 1.0 Refresh

For Vista NET2.0 is not needed and cannot be installed.

It is important to notice that even though you have DirectX9 installed you
might not have all components, so run the DirectX installer.
The newest DirectX installer can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3d38-db71-4c1b-
bc6a-9b6652cd92a3
Also notice that even though you have Vista and DirectX10 you still need to
install DirectX9 because DirectX10 does not replace DirectX9.

There is a patch 1.0.3 out, details on that located here:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...ad.php?t=349841
Notice that savegames from 1.0.0 does not work in 1.0.3.

This is the first time i bought a game with something like this happen. i am wondering what i am suppose to do with a game that is in an unpolish state. :(
Reply #42 Top
Not much, hope for the best I suppose...

I'll be a bit more reluctant to buy Paradox titles in the future, though.
I'm genuinely sorry to hear that. LEI was only an okay game, but it had a lot of potential. It'll be a pity if Pollux goes under -- they're clearly gamers at heart just as we are. (:(

Oookay, so. (I'm talkin' about the newly released LEI).

It's a pretty boring game. Well, not. It's a totally boring game. Thousands of colonisable solar systems? AND? You can't build anything on the planets, only choose, which kind of planet is should be, and take some troops and planetary weapons on them.

No micromanagment, no mediomanagement, no macromanagement. You can't controll the battles, can't controll the planets, only show them the way they shall follow.

I don't know, who said first, that this game is an excel-sheet with some graphical masking, but they was true.

The game is not like MoOI, or II, but the worst, the third one. Hitting the 'end turn' button, designing new ships, making fleets, sending them away, and trying to allie, subjugate or kill any other minor and major races.

This is NOT a strategy game.

Space-strategy starts at Master of Orion 2.

So, it doesn't worth a penny, and buy only, if you liked MoO3

galciv and space empires are "indie" and very well designed... heck distant worlds is also very indie and is a good game.

Lost Empires: Immortals is an AMATEURISH game... it actually has superior graphics to many indie games... but it has terrible design and implementation.

If anything, i'd say the the problem with lost empires is that it is an indie (low budget) game that focused way too much on the graphics and way too little on the game... typically the opposite is the case... where low budget games focus on making amazing gameplay with lower end graphics. (just an FYI, a huge majority of expense in a game, especially a high end one, is the cost of the graphics)
