School of Sins?

I am a new player who is loving the game but is still learning the ropes fighting the AI.

Now, I want to go multiplayer but don't want to walk straight into a bunch of players that will totally own me, thus pushing me back into the single player game.

I know it is early days, but is anyone thinking of setting up a school clan? This could run on similar lines to Allegiance's CADET school or Eve's University. This clan or school to train up newbie players and arrange various multi player games. there could even be a graduation of sorts.

Personally, I would prefer going through something like this rather than diving into multiplayer games where I will very likely make a fool of myself.

Just a thought...

You can make different usernames to play through ICO with. Just make up a new name and use it until you get the hang of it, then switch back to your normal name, noone will ever know :)

Here is my advice to learn how the game "works" in one round.

1- Play as TEC
2- Small random map, easy AI
3- ALWAYS bribe the pirates
4- build 2/3 scouts and set to auto explore to find all planets
5- Build the capital shipyard and get your free cap (first one is always free), it doesn't really matter which one.
6- Expand towards choke point planets and do not expand beyond them. This should net you half the map.
7- Fight the AI for choke point planets if needed.
8- Research and place trade ports at each planet/asteroid you own to increase credit income.
9- Once you have secured choke point planets, max out the tactical slots build 4/6 hanger bays, 2 repair bays to cover all your military structures (preferably with semi overlapping fields) and however many turrets you can fit in afterwards placed facing where the enemy will jump in and within reach of your planet so they can pick off siege frigates.
10- LRM frigates are very good for quickly boosting your defense when set to engage within weapons range and placed in overlapping fields of repair bays.
-edit- 11- I forgot to mention, NEVER have more then 2 planets with negative income at any one time. It is also best to grab a asteroid first if you can as it is cheaper to get income out of.

You now have half the map with and the AI can not touch you. Fell free to build each capital to see what it does, upgrade your planets, try different fleets (the pirate base will always provide you a good challenge) and see what research does what.

I'm doing fine against the AI but know I will suck in multi-player. That is why I was wondering if there is or maybe a clan that exists to school new players to the multiplayer part of the game.

RA siege and lrm spams....thats about all there is to multi, youll get mad and then go back to single player . that bout sums it up

Hmm - that'd be a shame if that's the extent to the multi tactics. Oh well, lesson over.

Lordmike is a psyco and a pony fanatic on Meth, don't listen to him, he runs a cult.

Anyway, this game, like any other, is a trial and error process. Go online, play, get your ass handed to you, watch the replay (there is ALWAYS a replay) and say "this is what I did, this is what he/they did, what can I learn here?"

Multiplayer aint that hard. I have played like 5 matches and not everyone is super good and use the standard tactics. I have played against a dude who didnt build cap ships(1vs1) and a dude who tried to spam me with starter frigs(1vs1). Alot of fun.

Just ask for other noobs to play with, play in a 3vs3 game or FFA. That way you will learn alot more then from playing against the AI. Also you have the forum for information about basic tactics.

Try FFA games in multiplayer. You'll get owned, probably, but the multiplayer experience doesnt end in one match! At then end of the game, talk with the others. Say what you thought you might have done, would it have any impact on the game, ask them about their strategy etc etc. Multiplayer is half about expecting the mindset of your opponent as well. Don't be letdown by one defeat... everyone gets owned 3-4 times before they start getting better!

Oh, and remember, if you play team game, announce before hand that you're not very good. I recommend sticking with FFA though. And huge map FFA helps as well, since the pace is a bit slower.
