what is vanilla? sorry i try to keep up on forums but i still dont got a clue is it just a mod or is it something else
Reply #102 Top
Thanks ironwill96, i must have missed that. It really bums me out that edits to the .entity files had to me made to change the .particle's.
I can see what's gonna happen now I'm gonna download it, play it once in single player, marvel at how pretty the game could look, and then go back to the original sad but with no other choice.
@rezor vanilla is another word for non-modded game. Like vanilla ice-cream, it's plain
Reply #104 Top
I agree with just leaving it a graphic mod, but in the end you are doing all the work and its your mod. If at all possible, please release a graphics mod only version. If not, I will still check it out since it looks great.

ah thanks dumb me lol was stupid question

Just release the graphics mod DON'T change anything else , this is what the players want :)

He already made it clear he's doing it for himself. I guess he has never experienced online gameplay..

That's too bad that you're unwilling to just release a graphics update. The fact is that most people online play vanilla sins, and by a changing the game, it's just going to discourage me from playing it in single player since I'll get use to your version and not the version people actually play.

I think many people mistake something about this mod.

Mod compatiblity is not just matter of entities also particles.
IF YOU WANT PLAY WITH MOD ONLINE YOU AND YOUR OPPONENTS MUST HAVE EXACT SAME MOD ACTIVATED.
This is a absolute rule. Even changing single particle file will cause version mismatch i swear.

This mod is basically useless if it needs to be enabled. It should be like changing the soundtrack for Sins, i don't see why it has to be enabled anywhere, just some files replaced that don't change gameplay at all.

Change soundtrack and change particle data is completly different problem. Particle data need to be properly matched with opponent players data for play online.

I thought the whole point of this was to be a GRAPHICS mod, with the "vanilla" game play completely intact, and actually usable online against people who aren't using the mod.

I`m quite annoying why so many ppl don`t understand this simple fact.
Sorry to say this but what you are demending is simply IMPOSSIBLE. There is no way Play mod with someone who don`t activate exact same mod.

Now I have some serious stress about this nonsenses and start reconsider my decision about public release... X-(

Okay, sorry now that I know it's impossible i won't ask again. Please don't reconsider public release! I can tell you for certain, me and my brother and friend at least will be playing this mod in a LAN environment. If possible, we could even look for people to play with us online.

To be honest...it's Bailknight's mod.

He can do with it what he wants. We might have preferrences (I myself would prefer only graphical upgrades), but that doesn't change the fact that he is the ultimate provider of this mod. It's been his time, his work.

If he chooses to make balance changes, that's his choice. He might lose people that would have otherwise DL'd the mod, but that's his choice. He has to weigh that against what he wants.

I'm sure that if he decides to not leave the balance alone, then there could be other mods that will leave the balance alone. Heck, someone will probably figure out how to take what he does and reverse any balance changes he (might) make. That's the beauty of mods.

In fact, aren't a few of the other mods looking to incorporate these alternate effects?

Calm the hell down. I know exactly how it works. I was referring to OFFLINE play. I said it's too bad that you just don't want to make it a graphics upgrade. It's too bad you want to change units around. The reason why this is bad is because when I go online, these changes will not be present, since I'll be playing vanilla. I don't want to play something that isn't the standard among people online, and I'm sure others are in that boat as well. Instead of putting your text in really big letters why don't you read what I actually posted next time?

Either way, it's your mod.

If you people bitching don't care who it is cause him not to release this mod to the public im going to be really pissed. Its his work people in these forums have 0 input as to how he makes his work. So let him finish it. Then if you want to go through and try and fix what he did to your liking then do it.

Again, you fail to comprehend how mods work. YOU CANNOT HAVE THIS SORT OF MOD WORK FOR VANILLA SINS! If you change the files, Sins will detect it, and you will only be able to play with others who have the exact same mod activated. Period. You can enable a mod and play with it online; that's not the problem. My mod has made a ton of changes to units, gameplay parameters, etc., and I CAN play online with others who have the mod enabled; you will be able to do so if your heart so desires. If you just want to play vanilla Sins with these particle effects, sorry, but NEWSFLASH: YOU CAN'T! Sins will treat it as a mod/changed files.

I suggest you actually bother to read Bailknight's response, as he explicitly states why your point doesn't make any sense.

ignore the naysayers and release the mod so that we who llok forward to it may bask in its excellence.

now, with the exclusion of this whole online debacle. I think what people are getting at is if it is possible for bailknight to release a version that only includes the enhanced graphics while leaving all of the vanilla balancing, structures, techs, rate of fire etc etc intact.

if its possible some people would like to see that.

I personally don't care about a few modded items such as the pji. but apparently its a huge issue for some.

TBH this would be easy for most people to fix. Since the .entity files would have to be bundled with the mod, and would be in their un-encrypted format (that can easily be modified with notepad no less) one could simply go through and revert all the mentioned stat/tech/rof/weapon/etc. modifications/rebalancings.

~~

For those of you who still don't understand;

Let's take The Mars Effect's autocannons as an example. They are consta-firing like chainguns. Their DPS remains unchanged (or so we are told) but simply altering the lines that change how the weapon appears (without touching anything else) is enough to cause a tiny difference in the checksum, causing incompatabilities.

It is impossible to alter that effect in a way that would not modify the checksum, in short, so there can't really be a graphics only version that would let you play against people with vanilla Sins.

and would be in their un-encrypted format

Unless he decided to convert them to binary with the tool included in the beta mod pack :P

jesus christ I don't know why my points aren't getting through.

I'm not interested, in any way, in playing mods online. no interest.

I was simply saying, for single player, it would be nice to enable a graphics-mod only. that way, when I play vanilla sins online - without any type of mod - I'm not going to be playing with units with different attributes from what I would normally play offline (because offline I'd be using the graphics mod, and the graphics mod also changes unit attributes).

Either way, I stopped caring a long time ago.

Your point was far from clear.

Anyways, it should be relatively easy to ensure Vanilla values with just the particle effects, depending on how Bailknight did it, just don't include the GameInfo files. The particle effects are separate from the gameplay changes he's making.

Wow, people need to calm down a bit in this thread.

In the end, we all need to realize that what he releases is up to him. If you want to give your input on how things can be done, do it constructively. Don't make demands or whine, because that's just going to turn the author away from finishing the mod.

There's nothing wrong with asking if he'd be willing to release a version that's got vanilla unit stats alongside one that's got his changes. There IS something wrong with demanding it, or saying that he's wrong to make changes.

Good lord I haven't seen this much chaos over a mod before. Stop with the votes, what you think this forum is, a place to force people to do your bidding?? I dont see any rule about people voting for mod options, can the vote chatter and save it for the dev's questions about the next patch.

Let ballknight make his mod to what he likes, If we like it we will use it and say Thank you. If you don't like the idea of a few code alterations or ship changes, then go make your own particle mod and see how much work it takes.

It really sounds like many of you have no clue what this mod has to change. The effects are in the particle AND in the GameInfo directorys. If you double the size of a weapons texture Sins wont care, you MUST tell the engine to double the rendered object first. If that confused you, tough.

before you go around bashing people for making a mod that just doesnt quite fit into your plans how about you go make your own and leave other peoples work alone.

Ballknight i hope you release this mod to the community, it looks incredible and the addition of a few changes to weapons, ship models and etc is just fine. I hope you dont let some sour grapes that cant lift a finger to help themselves ruin the mod or the game for you.

It's your mod, it's your decision on everything.

And for the record, I'm grateful just for the chance to test it out at some point in the future.

Don't let the ingrateful whiners get you down ;)
